The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as the '100 Deadliest Days of Summer,' when school is out and more people are on the roads.
Fortunately, here in Hawaii, we have not seen a significant spike during those 100 days. However, I think that's a perfect time to segway itno the fact that we are having a horrible year. So if everyone does their part, maybe we can make this the 100 safest days on Oahu.

Today in Chicago History: Monarch butterfly becomes state's official insect

Here's a look back at what happened in the Chicago area on Aug. 19 according to the Tribune's archives. Is an important event missing from this date? Email us. Weather records (from the National Weather Service, Chicago) 1886: Eight radicals who had been rounded up after the Haymarket Affair on May 4, 1886 — in which a bomb was thrown during a Chicago labor rally that resulted in the death of eight police officers and at least four civilians — were convicted by a jury and sentenced to death by hanging. Four of the convicted were hanged. One committed suicide before he could be executed. Death sentences for two others were commuted and one was sentenced to prison. The three surviving Haymarket defendants subsequently were pardoned by Illinois Gov. John Altgeld, who concluded they were all innocent. Though the U.S. honors workers in September — with Labor Day, which also has Chicago roots — the May 1886 events are commemorated in Chicago by a memorial on Desplaines Street, north of Randolph Street: A bronze statue of a wagon that served as a speakers' platform during the labor meeting. 1969: Ken Holtzman pitched two no-hit games for the Chicago Cubs. This first one was probably more noteworthy for two reasons. First, Holtzman did not strike out a single Atlanta Brave in this game at Wrigley Field. Second, Hank Aaron slammed a high fly that actually cleared the left-field wall. Bleacherites were bracing for the descending ball as a souvenir when the wind blew the ball back into the field of play, where Billy Williams caught it for the out. Holtzman, who died in 2024, and Jake Arrieta are the only pitchers to throw two no-hitters for the Cubs in the modern era, with Holtzman's second coming against the Cincinnati Reds on June 3, 1971, at Riverfront Stadium. 1975: Illinois Gov. Dan Walker signed a bill proposed by third graders at Dennis School in Decatur that made the monarch butterfly the state insect of Illinois. Vintage Chicago Tribune: How the Tully monster became Illinois' official state fossilThe students observed the signing in Springfield. 'We have here a group of youngsters who are completing a unique experience in the governmental process,' Walker said. 'They proposed, they lobbied, and today are bringing to fruition a new law.' The state already had a state tree, flower, bird and mineral, but this was the first insect to become an official symbol in Illinois. 2024: Rookie Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson delivered a short, but spirited pitch during the kickoff of the Democratic National Convention. Johnson opened his speech by declaring Chicago 'the greatest city in the world,' shouting out its long roster of Black and female trailblazers over the decades: the journalist Ida B. Wells, women's suffrage activist Jane Addams, civil rights legend the Rev. Jesse Jackson and the U.S.'s first Black president, Barack Obama. 'And now, Chicago — this city of hard work and caring people — is where Democrats will celebrate President Joe Biden and nominate Kamala Harris for president of the United States of America,' Johnson said, to applause. 'As the son of a family that worked to make ends meet, I know that Kamala Harris — the daughter of a mom who worked hard every single day — she is going to look out for the interests of people.' MADD, law enforcement prep for 'Saturation Saturday' DUI enforcement

Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Mothers Against Drunk Driving will join forces with law enforcement across the country this weekend for "Saturation Saturday," in an effort to save lives as summer moves into the Labor Day holiday. Since 2019, drunken driving deaths have increased 33% across Labor Day weekends, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System, or FARS. MADD announced its annual campaign Monday to curb what has become an increasingly deadly trend this time of year. "Impaired driving affects everyone and is the leading cause of death on our roadways," said Stacey Stewart, chief executive officer of MADD. "MADD is committed to supporting equitable and just enforcement efforts to stop this senseless crime. We owe it to one another to make safer choices." Together, MADD and 260 law enforcement departments in 16 states -- including Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia -- will increase sobriety checkpoints and DUI patrols on Saturday. According to the Centers for Disease Control, sobriety checkpoints reduce drunken driving deaths by up to 20%. The goal of "Saturation Saturday" is to educate people in August before everyone gets on the road over Labor Day weekend, according to MADD. The campaign runs in conjunction with the NHTSA's "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" effort. "High-visibility traffic safety enforcement efforts serve as a deterrent to impaired driving crashes and prevent senseless deaths and injuries," said Stewart. "Together, alongside law enforcement and NHTSA, MADD urges the public to have a plan for getting home safe -- whether you're driving, riding or hosting -- as we approach Labor Day weekend." The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, which has also run campaigns over the summer to warn about the dangers of drinking, urges everyone to designate a driver or plan to call a taxi or ride-hailing service to make sure no one gets behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. Part of MADD's goal to end drunk driving in the future, is the nonprofit's push for the HALT Drunk Driving Law. The law would equip every new car with anti-drunk driving technology by 2030 and could save an estimated 10,000 lives per year.

Officials Warn That Beachgoers Could Risk 'Arrest' If They Break Curfew Following Tragic Incident

'If they get really arrogant — I hope not — they'll be arrested,' Seaside Heights, New Jersey, mayor Anthony Vaz said NEED TO KNOW Seaside Heights, New Jersey, is enforcing a beach curfew following the death of a man who got caught in a rip current The incident occurred after hours, so no lifeguards were on duty Seaside Heights Mayor Anthony Vaz said the town is prohibiting swimming off the beach after lifeguards leave each day to prevent further accidents A New Jersey town is enforcing a new policy on its beaches following a deadly incident last week. On Aug. 11, the Seaside Heights Fire Department was alerted to a report of multiple swimmers in distress off of Webster Avenue Beach in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, according to Fox News. The city's fire department and additional agencies responded to a report of six individuals 100 yards offshore caught in a rip current. The victims were rescued in three waves: three in the first, two in the second, and the final victim by himself. Rescue crews immediately performed CPR upon retrieval of the final swimmer, but the 31-year-old was pronounced dead at a local hospital. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), rip currents are powerful currents of water that move away from shore. They can sweep even the strongest swimmers. Deaths often occur when swimmers are pulled offshore and are unable to stay afloat. There were no lifeguards on duty at the time of the incident, as it occurred after hours, when many of them had already gone home. Lifeguards patrol Seaside Heights beaches between Memorial weekend and Labor Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Following the event, Seaside Heights mayor Anthony Vaz said he wants to clear the ocean after lifeguards leave for the day. "I don't care who gets mad at me, I'm closing the beach," Vaz told local outlet News 12. "If it's endangerment, I hate to say this, sue me." The mayor told Fox News there will be an increased presence of law enforcement, too. "They'll be there the rest of the season, chasing people out of the water at five o'clock," he said. "If [people] refuse to get out, we'll [give them a summons]. And if they get really arrogant — I hope not — they'll be arrested." PEOPLE has reached out to Seaside Heights' mayor's office and police department for comment. On Friday, Aug. 15, local outlet Asbury Park Press captured members of the police department patrolling the beach after lifeguards had left. The officers used ATVs to move around the beach, warning beachgoers to stay out of the water. The outlet also captured signs posted at each entrance to Seaside Heights' beach."Swimming permitted only when lifeguards are on duty!" the signs said. According to the NWS, there have been 52 fatalities within surf zones in the United States this year. Twenty-five of those deaths, or 48%, were a result of rip current.
