Washington D.C. ready to work with Commanders on historic RFK stadium site

USA Today14-02-2025

What's the future of the Robert Fitzgerald Kennedy (RFK) stadium site?
A meeting to discuss this matter was held on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Eastern High School in Washington, D.C.
A new website has been launched to present the matter to the public at https://ourrfk.dc.gov/.
The site's summary statement begins: 'The District now has control of the RFK campus, the largest unused tract of land in the District. These 174 acres can now be transformed into a vibrant hub of housing, world-class recreational facilities, green spaces, and economic opportunities for District residents and visitors alike.'
Could the Washington NFL franchise (formerly Redskins), now the Commanders, be returning to the historic part of the city where they won five NFC Championships and three Super Bowls. The Redskins played at RFK from the 1961 to 1996 seasons.
Of course, there will be very energetic residents of the city who will come down on both sides of the aisle on this one. Both sides were welcomed to attend the meeting in the high school auditorium, where they could voice their concerns or their support, whichever it may be for them.
DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and some city representatives were scheduled to attend, and a presentation was going to be included in the docket, permitting the vision of the project to be publicly demonstrated.
Commanders owner Josh Harris has previously discussed how he himself decades ago was many times at the stadium as a fan of those very successful Redskins teams, so he is quite aware of what a good NFL team can mean for the city's pride.
On this day in 1983, John Riggins rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns, while Darryl Grant returned an interception 10 yards for a touchdown to seal the Redskins 31-17 win over the Cowboys in the 1982 NFC Championship Game at RFK Stadium.#HTTR #WashingtonFootball pic.twitter.com/qanNLHzKnW

Harris recently said, 'It is our responsibility to make this an amazing economic development opportunity, for where it is, it can create a lot of jobs and help that area.'
What happens to the surrounding land of the RFK site? This may be where the most heat will come in future debates because certainly not everyone will get what they want out of the land. There will have to be compromises made and a spirit of working together.

Patriots' Mike Vrabel Explains What Leadership Is to Him

Patriots' Mike Vrabel Explains What Leadership Is to Him originally appeared on Athlon Sports. New England Patriots' new head coach Mike Vrabel has always been known as a leader and culture builder in the NFL. When Vrabel got his first head coaching opportunity with the Tennessee Titans, he led them to four-straight winning seasons and three playoff appearances. Advertisement Vrabel's teams have always been built on grit and toughness, just as he displayed during his 14-year NFL career. Monday morning, Vrabel met with the media and was asked about the leadership of his quarterback, Drake Maye. But his response focused more on what he believes leadership is. "I don't think it matters if you're a quarterback or an offensive lineman or a running back or a defensive back. It's about your ability to reach certain players," Vrabel said. "We don't want to have any gaps. So hopefully, you know what to do, you're prepared, you do things the right way, you're a good listener, you can adapt to what happens and adapt to the people that you're talking to, maybe based on what they need." The Patriots dominated the 2010s, playing in five Super Bowls and winning three. But since 2020, New England has had just one winning season. Advertisement The Patriots fired Jerod Mayo and brought in their former player Vrabel as the new head coach this season to try to bring back the grit, intensity, and discipline New England displayed during Bill Belichick's 24-year tenure. The first step for Vrabel, building leaders and relationships in his locker room. "Sometimes people need a little different encouraging and sometimes you need a little bit firmer hand and maybe a little bit more firmer stance," Vrabel said. "I think that's all important in understanding and getting to know each person before you can start to lead them." All signs from the offseason point to positivity in that department so far, as Vrabel continues to develop and grow the leadership of his young quarterback and new team. The Washington Commanders are fully committed maximizing the early years of Jayden Daniels' career evidenced in their aggressive pursuit of star talent through the last few months. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Jayden Daniels proved earlier than most rookie quarterbacks that he was ready for the biggest stages in the in the NFL. The Washington Commanders broke a decades long conference championship game drought in Year 1, accomplishing feat thought impossible at the start of the season. Advertisement Nonetheless, the Commanders are now viewed among the contenders in the NFC. Washington has not settled on the satisfaction of their new image. Instead, they have responded with some big time moves this offseason. The Commanders were proactive in the trade market, bringing in two elite that directly impact Daniels' development. Their moves for Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil encompass what Bleacher Report labeled an all-in haul, slotting in at No. 2 in their rankings of the NFL's biggest offseason moves. "After their surprise run to the NFC Championship Game last year, the Washington Commanders shoved their chips to the middle of the table this offseason with the trades for wide receiver Deebo Samuel and offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil. "Samuel gives them a sizable upgrade at wideout opposite Terry McLaurin, while Tunsil is one of the better blindside protectors in the league." Advertisement Those were not the only two roster decisions they made over the last few months, but they set the tone for the vision of the franchise through the coming years. Since Daniels proved he can have the Commanders in the thick of contention now, it makes most sense to capitalize on the cap flexibility in the present to add pieces before the quarterback signs what could end up being a record-breaking deal down the line. Granted, this vision coming together does rely on the Commanders locking down McLaurin's contract extension, an issue currently undermining the excitement of the 2025 campaign. Assuming cooler heads prevail there, however, Washington will not only threat to contend next season. They are positioned to become a perennial threat to the title for the foreseeable future. Germaine Pratt's Release Could Benefit Commanders

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Washington Commanders have come a long way from a Daniel Snyder era that produced more nightmares than restful evenings. Josh Harris has been a breath of fresh air, breathing life back into a once-proud franchise that fell on hard times for more than three decades. After winning three Super Bowls between the 1982 season and January of 1992, Washington has only won five playoff games since then. Two came this past January under the current regime. For the first time in a long time, the future looks as good as the past. Those dark clouds are finally producing some silver linings. Germaine Pratt #57, Washington Commanders news (Photo by) Germaine Pratt #57, Washington Commanders news (Photo by) Photo by/Newsweek/Getty Images Following an NFC Championship Game this past January, Washington set its sights on reloading. Things seem to be going well on that front. There are conflicting reports about the Deebo Samuel acquisition. Some say it won't lead to much. Others state the combination of Deebo and Terry McLaurin is frightening. Washington will no doubt go as far as Jayden Daniels and company will lead them, but the defense will have to limit some of these powerful opposing NFC offenses. For all their hard offseason work, the Commanders are still in need of help at edge rusher, but thanks to a recent development, they may have been gifted with an opportunity to add linebacker depth by an AFC North squad. Must read: Commanders Evaluation Is Music to Jayden Daniels' Ears The Commanders should at least inquire about Germaine Pratt after his release Washington doesn't see the Cincinnati Bengals very often. Unless they meet in a Super Bowl, they're probably only going to see each other once every four seasons, but Cincy may have thrown an alley-oop pass. They released veteran Germaine Pratt to save almost $6 million. For a Commanders team led by a defensive mastermind, that news has to be seen as being interesting. It's hard to gauge the temperature for what's going on with the team formerly known as 'The Bungles'. They seemingly only want to pay their quarterback and his wide receivers. No one on the defensive side of the ball appears to be a priority. Must read: NFL Trade Idea Presents Bold Swap Between Commanders and Jets Trey Hendrickson seems firm in his stance that he isn't playing without a new deal. Two of their rookie defenders, Shemar Stewart and Demetrius Knight Jr., remain unsigned, and Pratt asked to be traded after the most recent season back in February. Pratt, a former third-round selection enters his seventh NFL season this summer, and for the first time, it will be with a new organization. Might the Commanders be interested? They should at least inquire. Six years with the Bengals produced 616 tackles, seven interceptions, and seven forced fumbles. 143 tackles during the 2024-25 season doubles as his career high in that category. More news: Commanders Could Resurface as Potential Jaire Alexander Suitors Washington has a lot of money tied up in the linebacker position already. Much of which is consumed by Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu, but if they are interested in depth and another good player to add to the rotation, Pratt is a gamer. He may also provide a decent succession plan for Wagner. The future Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee may begin to consider his mortality and retirement in the near future.
