Test final must trump IPL, says S Africa coach

Kuwait Times14-05-2025

JOHANNESBURG: Coach Shukri Conrad said on Tuesday that South Africa's players must prioritise the World Test Championship final over the closing stages of the Indian Premier League. Conrad said there was an agreement that South Africa's players would return from India on May 26 –- the day after the original date of the IPL final. This would enable them to have time to prepare for the Test final against Australia at Lord's in London from June 11 to 15.
He said he did not expect that to change, despite the IPL being rescheduled to finish on June 3 after a postponement caused by recent hostilities between India and Pakistan. 'Our initial agreement with the IPL and the Indian board was that our players would return on the 26th,' said Conrad.
He cautioned that discussions between Cricket South Africa and the Indian board were still taking place. 'As it stands, we're not budging on this. We want our players back on the 26th.' Conrad and captain Temba Bavuma both expressed support for star fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, who will spearhead the bowling attack after serving a one-month ban for recreational drug use.
'I am thankful that the process that was followed was in line with world standards,' said Conrad. 'I wasn't going to pre-empt anything and we allowed the process to run as it did. 'KG (Rabada) is a massive player for us. The big thing for us was to close ranks around him and ensure that he is in a good space. 'He's served his sentence and all that I am interested in now is KG producing the sort of performances we know he is capable of.'
'Focus on individual'
Bavuma said he had had private talks with Rabada, who he described as a close friend. 'From a captaincy point of view, the process has passed and it's now a focus on the individual, the human, and making sure he gets the support he needs and that he will be in the best state to perform.'
Asked whether he expected Rabada to face criticism or sledging from the Australians, Bavuma said the fast bowler had faced controversy before, notably in South Africa's most recent series against Australia in 2017/18.
Rabada was initially suspended after a confrontation with Australian captain Steve Smith, who was himself banned after the 'sandpaper-gate' Test at Newlands in Cape Town. Rabada appealed successfully against his ban and finished as player of the series. 'We saw how that series ended and how he performed,' said Bavuma.
But Bavuma admitted that the situation this time was different. 'There will be a lot of people who will point fingers at him, some who have skeletons in their own closet, but I am not one of those people.' Bavuma said he was fully fit after missing South Africa's domestic four-day series final in April because of a recurrence of an elbow injury.
Batsman David Bedingham has recovered from a broken toe suffered while batting for Durham in an English county championship match against Yorkshire in April. Conrad said he expected South Africa to go into the final as underdogs but said that was purely on the basis of experience.
'When we play our best cricket we've every chance of beating Australia. I give us more than an even chance,' he said. The players will assemble in England on May 31 ahead of a warm-up match against Zimbabwe in Arundel from June 3 to 6.
Squad: Temba Bavuma (captain), David Bedingham, Corbin Bosch, Tony de Zorzi, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Lungi Ngidi, Dane Paterson, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne (wkt). – AFP

Casualties in stampede at India cricket celebrations

Casualties in stampede at India cricket celebrations BENGALURU: A stampede broke out as a tightly packed crowd celebrated the sporting win of their home cricket team in the Indian city of Bengaluru, resulting in multiple deaths, local media reported on Wednesday. AFP could not immediately confirm the death toll, which India's NDTV broadcaster reported to have left at least 11 people dead. The Times of India newspaper reported seven dead. An AFP photographer saw an intense crush of crowds as a sea of people crammed the streets. Broadcasters showed police carrying young children in their arms rushing away from crowds, who had seemingly fainted. One unattended young man was sitting in an ambulance struggling to breathe. Karnataka state's Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said he was not able to immediately confirm deaths. 'This is not a controllable crowd,' he said, speaking to reporters. 'The police were finding it very difficult.' 'I apologize to the people of Karnataka and Bengaluru,' he said. 'We wanted to take a procession, but the crowd was very uncontrollable... the crowd was so much.' Cricket fans had come out to celebrate and welcome home their heroes, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, after they beat Punjab Kings in a roller-coaster Indian Premier League cricket final on Tuesday night. An AFP reporter said the Bengaluru team had reached the cricket stadium in the city, where celebrations had previously been planned. – AFP

South Africa dismiss Australia's Smith on opening day of WTC final

South Africa pacemen destroy Australia top order LONDON: South Africa dismissed the dangerous Steve Smith to wrest back the initiative on the opening day of the World Test Championship final Wednesday but the defending champions recovered to reach 190-5 at tea. Australia had earlier collapsed to 67-4 at Lord's after being sent in to bat by Proteas captain Temba Bavuma, with fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen taking two wickets apiece. As conditions for batting eased at the increasingly sunny ground, Smith and all-rounder Beau Webster shared a fifth-wicket partnership of 79. But Smith, having survived against South Africa's frontline quicks, fell to part-time spinner Aiden Markram for 66, leaving Australia struggling at 146-5. At tea, they had moved on to 190-5, with Webster 55 not out and Alex Carey unbeaten on 22. Australia were in desperate trouble in overcast conditions in the early overs in London, reduced to 16-2 after losing Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green in a single Rabada over. Khawaja fell for a 20-ball duck in the seventh over, edging behind to David Bedingham at first slip. Three balls later 12-1 became 16-2 when Green edged low to second slip, where Markram held a superb diving catch. Rabada had now taken two wickets for four runs in four balls. The 30-year-old, who has more than 300 Test wickets, is playing his first Test after serving a one-month ban for cocaine use earlier this year. Australia have struggled to find a regular opening partner for Khawaja since David Warner's retirement 17 months ago, with Marnus Labuschagne the latest batsman tried out. The 30-year-old, without a Test century for nearly two years, battled hard but was undone by classic fast-bowling from towering left-armer Jansen, dismissed for 17 of 56 balls. Hit on the shoulder the previous ball when trying to duck a bouncer, Labuschagne pushed tentatively at a Jansen delivery from around the wicket and got a thin edge through to wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne, leaving Australia 46-3. They had been in similar trouble in the 2023 final against India across London at the Oval, only for Smith and Travis Head to both score hundreds as they turned the match in Australia's favour. Head, however, could only manage 11 before he glanced Jansen, with Verreynne holding an excellent diving one-handed catch. Smith, who survived a close lbw appeal on 26 against Jansen, went to fifty when he cut Rabada for a ninth four. But he became only Markram's fourth Test victim in 46 matches when he edged a booming drive and Jansen, at slip, clung on at the third attempt. Webster completed his fifty off 69 balls to underline the batting depth of Australia, who managed 123 runs for just the loss of Smith's wicket in the second session. – AFP

Labuschagne to partner with Khawaja as Australia's openers in WTC final at Lord's

LONDON, June 10 (AP): Marnus Labuschagne has moved one place up the batting order to open with Usman Khawaja for Australia in the World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord's from Wednesday. Labuschagne's place in the team was in doubt after a lean 2023-25 WTC cycle - average 28.33 runs - but he was given another shot on Tuesday by Australia's failure to find a permanent replacement at opener for David Warner, who retired from tests in January 2024. Labuschagne will open in a test for only the second time in nine years. The 19-year-old specialist opener Sam Konstas was left out, and Travis Head, preferred in Sri Lanka in February, will drop back to No. 5 in the order. Konstas was disappointed, Cummins said. Fit-again Josh Hazlewood was picked ahead of the unlucky Scott Boland in the pace attack. Boland replaced an injured Hazlewood for the 2023 final and starred as Australia beat India by 209 runs at the Oval. Nine of those 11 will play consecutive WTC finals. Cameron Green will bat at No. 3 in his first test since lower spine surgery in October sidelined him for six months, and at No. 6 the two-meter-tall allrounder Beau Webster, who debuted in January against India. South Africa gave Lungi Ngidi's experience the edge over Dane Paterson as the third seamer. Ngidi hasn't played a test since August, but 19 tests and 55 wickets, including Joe Root's at Lord's in 2022, put him in the pace attack with Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen. Paterson, more deceptive than fast, earned five-fors in his last two tests against Sri Lanka and Pakistan in December and played at Lord's three times in the last two months for Middlesex in the English County Championship second division, but that wasn't enough. Lineups: South Africa: Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Wiaan Mulder, Temba Bavuma (captain), Tristan Stubbs, David Bedingham, Kyle Verrynne, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi
