Govt to introduce public cleansing reform under 13MP
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said key reforms under the initiative would include dust-free road efforts, the use of electric vehicles (EVs) for night cleaning operations, and the introduction of a Single Window Payment Monitoring System.
"Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will table the 13MP in parliament tomorrow (today), and among the core pillars to be announced under the plan is the Public Cleansing Reform.
"I believe that with the advancement of technology, the cleaning sector must also adapt to new innovations that will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of daily operations," he said in his speech at the 2025 Cleaners' Day Appreciation Ceremony here yesterday.
The ceremony was organised by the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) to recognise the contributions and sacrifices of cleaning personnel in maintaining the cleanliness and harmony of public spaces.
Nga also proposed that the event be held annually to honour the dedication and contributions of cleaning workers in the country.
He said the work of cleaning personnel was noble and urged society to shift its perception and extend proper respect to the sector.
Commenting on enforcement measures, he said the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing (Amendment) Bill 2025, which was passed in the Dewan Rakyat last week, would enable courts to impose fines and community service orders on individuals found guilty of littering in public areas.
"Therefore, I urge all Malaysians to be more responsible about cleanliness, not out of fear of punishment but out of love for the country.
"Let us cultivate a sense of collective responsibility for a cleaner, healthier and more prosperous future," he said.
During the event, SWCorp was awarded a certificate by The Malaysia Book Of Records (MBR) in recognition of the "Heaviest Bird Structure Made From Recycled Materials."
The initiative was part of SWCorp's efforts to promote sustainability awareness through art and waste reuse.
The iconic sculpture is now installed on a building along Kuantan Art Street, symbolising a standout green innovation in the urban landscape.– Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition MPs demand that the authorities provide a detailed explanation for why a post-mortem examination was not carried out immediately in the case of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir's death. The PAS secretary-general then called for the Home and Education ministers to present a detailed report on the case to the Dewan Rakyat. On Aug 8, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) instructed the police to immediately exhume and conduct a post-mortem on the late Zara Qairina. This follows the completion of the analysis of the full preliminary report. On Aug 11, a federal police task force comprising nine personnel from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department would take over the investigation into the death of Zara Qairina. The team, comprising both officers and rank-and-file personnel, has been deployed to Sabah. Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah (PN-Indera Mahkota) questioned whether there should be a separate probe on the weaknesses before the takeover by the Bukit Aman. "There must be a conclusive probe to identify who is involved or has given orders, either directly or indirectly, to the police, and the type of punishment if there are any mistakes made," said Saifuddin. Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran) also agreed, saying that there was a blatant disregard for the process and procedures involved in the case. "This has created a perception as if there is a cover-up. "The outcry made by the public must be considered," he said. Zara Qairina was pronounced dead at a hospital in Sabah on July 17, a day after she reportedly fell from the third floor of her school dormitory. Takiyuddin and Rayer trade barbs during 13MP debate
KUALA LUMPUR: Tempers flared in the Dewan Rakyat today as Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Baru) and R.S.N. Rayer (PH-Jelutong) exchanged heated words during the 13th Malaysia Plan debate. Takiyuddin had sought clarification from the government on strengthening the socio-economic status of Chinese new villages. He questioned the justification for the master plan and asked why there was none for the Indian community, particularly estate workers without homes. He was interjected by Rayer, who claimed Takiyuddin's statement was wrong and insisted there were allocations to build houses for the Indian community. Rayer had sought to invoke standing orders against Takiyuddin for misleading the Lower House. Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah, who was standing in to chair the proceedings, reminded Rayer to respect the standing orders and to allow Takiyuddin to finish before raising a point of order. Takiyuddin then remarked that Rayer "would be silent in court". This prompted Rayer to challenge him to meet in court, saying: "If you're brave, meet me in court. I will teach you, Kota Baru."
