Brace from Amond helps dominant Waterford to win over Galway United
On a night of consequence at the bottom of the table, Waterford asserted their dominance. After beating Cork in the RSC, they dispatched Galway United on their own turf, putting four past a once mean defence.
The critical blow came after the restart. A routine ball over the top caused paralysis in the United defence. Pádraig Amond glided through and finished with coolness and class.
In the past, United dictated the terms against Waterford and impose their physicality. This time, Waterford went on the front foot, encouraging Conan Noonan, Amond and Tommy Lonergan forward at every chance.
The interplay of the three allowed for Noonan to fashion some space and drill home from the edge of the box in the 30th minute.
Their positivity yielded other big chances in the first. Waterford were quick and crafty on the break. Amond was played clean through at one point, but Evan Watts saved brightly. The 'keeper had earlier spilled a cross, but the Blues couldn't convert.
There was some drama at the Clubhouse End too as United got to grips with the game. Stephen McMullan scrambled to save an Aaron Bolger lob. There was a decent penalty shout too waved away. The 'keeper saved a Rob Slevin header comfortably too.
A couple of substitutions at half-time indicated that all wasn't well on the home front. David Hurley and Dara McGuinness made some impact, but it was veteran striker Stephen Walsh who hauled them back into the contest.
There was then a flurry of goals, three in six minutes. Bolger turned one into his own net after a Noonan cross. Debutant McGuiness pulled one back at the other end.
The decisive intervention came when Alan Patchell gave a debatable penalty to the visitors. Amond scored to restore order. It was little more than his side deserved and sufficient for them to see it out.

In the CIES football observatory, Baleba is valued at up to £76million, though it is understood Brighton have no intention to sanction a sale for the rising star this summer, with Seagulls chief Paul Barber denying that an approach had been made at all. Barber said: "There is always going to be interest in our players. Manchester United have not been in touch with me, speculation is speculation. "Carlos is a fantastic talent and we hope he will be here for years to come. But it's subject to the dynamics of the football world, which is not always predictable." United are on the hunt for a dynamic midfielder to go in Ruben Amorim's 3-4-3 pivot after unconvincing displays by Manuel Ugarte in pre-season, with his display against Everton coming in fro particular scrutiny. Baleba was one of the Premier League's top ranked midfielders last season for tackles, blocks, interceptions and recoveries, while his progressive carries and forward passing numbers were also impressive. And such is the fervour for United to sign Baleba - who exclusively told SunSport about his ambition to win the Ballon d'Or - that the thought of getting the deal over the line has seen some of the Red Devils faithful make some stunning promises. Advertisement BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK One excited fan declared: "If we sign Baleba then I'm calling my first born child INEOS." A second said: "Throw the f***ing bank at him. Another said: "Get Baleba and it's the best window since 2007." A fifth said: "Bro what the f*** were we gonna do if we got UCL???????" A sixth said: "Nah the way United fans manifested this Baleba [move] through pure faith and blind optimism We are massive man." Baleba made his international debut for Cameroon last year and has played in seven games for the Indomitable Lions so far. And his high ambitions of winning football's ultimate individual prize is sure to go down well with Man Utd fans and transfer chiefs as they look to bring the club back to its former glory. He told SunSport in an exclusive interview: "Declan Rice, Matheus Cunha, Joelinton, they've all told me I've got it in me. I want to win the Ballon d'Or like Rodri. Advertisement "I watched him during the Euros and before his injury I played against him and time I got the ball, he was right in front of me. 'It was my first game against Manchester City, and it was very difficult. He made it so hard to dribble or pass. That showed his class. 9 'His success has opened the door for midfielders like us to believe we can win the Ballon d'Or someday... I can get to the very top of world football. Advertisement 'But I need to stay focused, stay calm, not rush, and not let what people write get in my head. If I keep working hard, I can be like Luka Modric or Toni Kroos, I just need to stay grounded." Baleba's journey to football stardom is nothing short of remarkable. He tragically lost his mother three years ago just as he got his breakthrough European move to French side Lille. But he explained the pain of his loss drives him forwards to be the best version of himself. Baleba continued: "It was very difficult for me because I didn't see my mum. I wanted her next to me, but when I signed for Brighton, she wasn't here. Advertisement 'That's why the first season was really hard. I thought about her a lot. But I vowed that I would be the best version of myself and go as far as I can in my career." His English is still a work in progress, but he's proud of the steps he has taken to settle in, even if the British weather isn't always his cup of tea. He added: "I love it here, to be honest. My favourite English food is the English breakfast, if I'm allowed to say that! But the weather is the only issue, it changes all the time." 9 Advertisement TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

Bolivian altitude has lifted Ashling Thompson to new heights
ANYONE who has endured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery will tell you the recovery is no walk in the park. Ashling Thompson is now three years post-op. The Milford supremo returned to full fitness within a year of picking up the dreaded injury and just in time for the latter end of the 2023 championship. She added another two All-Ireland senior medals to an already burgeoning collection courtesy of victories over Waterford and Galway respectively. She is not just back though. Back with a bang. Demonstrated by the awarding of the Player of the Match gong in last season's Croke Park showdown against the Tribeswomen, which is a repeat of Sunday's highly-anticipated decider. When you check if the overall medal total is currently at six, her reply 'I'm going for my seventh' tells a lot about the 35-year-old's drive and determination. That's quite the feat. Throw in three All-Ireland club titles. And four All-Stars, the first of which arrived 10 years ago as the victorious Rebel captain and the most recent in 2024 — incidentally, in both finals Galway provided the opposition. She recently took up a new job as a recruit prison officer in the midlands, and while trying to navigate the M8 motorway a couple of times a week for training brings fresh challenges, it was the RTÉ series 'Uncharted with Ray Goggins' earlier this year that provided the most serious of tests. The week of endurance was spent travelling through the dense forests of Bolivia in the company of Paralympic Gold medalist Ellen Keane. The journey started on Death Road. 'The only thing I knew was that I was going to Bolivia. I knew nothing about what we were going to be doing,' she says. 'Bolivia is one of the poorest countries in South America and I knew it wasn't going to be easy. We were going to be faced with a lot of challenges and we would be pushed and would be tested. Ashling Thompson (left) and Ellen Keane with a local buy during their trip in Bolivia in Uncharted With Ray Goggins 'I was happy to do that, I was intrigued. When I found out Ellen Keane was coming — I've only met her in passing — I suppose I was anxious about spending that length of time in the wild with someone I'd never known.' On reflection, it wasn't an issue as the two sportswomen negotiated numerous perilous situations. 'Her disability didn't make one bit of a difference. She actually made a show of me at times, to be honest. Ellen says herself she was born with the disability, it is not something that happened along the way so she doesn't know any different. She's had to figure things out all her life differently to everybody else but it doesn't stop her from doing it. 'We were in the wild — no phones, no electricity, no running water, no accommodation (it was tents), no toilets. It was pretty much yourself and the clothes that were on your back. That is a long, long time. People thought we were looked after behind the scenes, but it was actually worse than what people think.' While Ashling might have been apprehensive about a venture into the unknown, and despite the risk, fear didn't come into it. 'You'd think you'd be in danger but it was quite the opposite. I was never afraid. Having Ellen, Ray and the crew, and then the Bolivians are the salt of the earth. They really looked after us. Even though they've nothing, they're incredible people. 'The experience left me sad more than anything. By the end of it, you didn't want to come home because you bonded. You just had each other.' Climbing the high peaks of the Andean mountains — let it be by accident or design — enhanced the quality of her performance when she got back to the playing field. 'It was pretty much altitude training, I suppose that is why I was lifting in the league!,' she smiles, referring to her Player of the Match accolade in the Division 1A league final defeat of Galway (0-21 to 0-10) in April. 'It probably did stand to me fitness wise and as a mental strength too. It was unbelievable, I would go back in the morning if I could.' Well, not literally, as there is an All-Ireland final fast approaching. Even though she's been named as the most outstanding player in the two most recent contests between the counties, she holds great respect for Galway. 'We love playing Galway and having that challenge, it is a massive challenge. They're a top team and that is what you want. It is going to go down to the wire. You don't know who is going to come out on top and isn't that the beauty of the sport?'
