Bangladesh to hold election by April next year: Chief Adviser Yunus

Dhaka, Jun 6 (PTI) Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Friday announced that the national election will be held in the first half of April next year, according to a media report.
'There is immense public and political interest regarding the timing of the election. As I've said before, it will be held between December and June. The government is working to ensure an environment conducive to a credible election within this timeframe,' he said.
Yunus, who took charge after the toppling of the former premier Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government in August last year, said that the government's key responsibility is to hold a clean, peaceful, festive, and inclusive election.
'Our goal is to prevent future crises. That requires institutional reform. Without ensuring good governance in the institutions directly linked to the electoral process, all the sacrifices made by students and citizens will be in vain,' the 84-year-old Nobel Laureate said.
He reiterated that the current administration was formed with three mandates: reform, justice, and election.
'We believe that by the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, we will reach a broadly acceptable position on reforms and justice — particularly in addressing crimes against humanity, as part of our collective duty to the martyrs of the July uprising,' he said.
On May 28, former premier Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) intensified pressure on the Yunus-led interim government as tens of thousands of youths staged a massive rally demanding elections by December.

AAP's Jain appears before ACB in classroom scam case
NEW DELHI: Former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain on Friday appeared before the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) for questioning in connection with an alleged corruption case concerning the construction of classrooms in government schools. Jain had been summoned by the ACB to appear for questioning. Before heading to the ACB office, he maintained that the previous AAP government had prioritised education in the city, unlike the present BJP-led administration. 'The previous AAP government in the national capital worked towards improving the city's education, while the current BJP government is only doing politics,' Jain said. The ACB had earlier summoned AAP leaders, former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and former PWD minister Satyendar Jain in connection with the case. Jain was asked to appear on June 6, and Sisodia has been summoned for June 9, according to officials. In April, the ACB registered a case against AAP leaders, alleging corruption in the construction of classrooms at inflated costs. The agency claimed that a scam worth Rs 2,000 crore had been uncovered in the construction of 12,748 classrooms and buildings during the tenure of the AAP government. The complaints were filed by Delhi BJP spokesperson Harish Khurana, BJP MLA Kapil Mishra, and Neelkanth Bakshi of the BJP's media relations department. They alleged corruption in the construction of approximately 12,748 school classrooms at an expenditure of Rs 2,892 crore. According to the ACB, the awarded tender cost for building a classroom was around Rs 24.86 lakh, while such a room could have been constructed for Rs 5 lakh. It was further alleged that the project was awarded to 34 contractors, many of whom are reportedly linked to the AAP. Joint Commissioner of Police (ACB) Madhur Verma said, 'It was decided in meetings of the expenditure finance committee for 2015-16 that the project would be completed by June 2016 at the sanctioned cost without any scope for future cost escalations. But not even a single work was completed within the prescribed time and significant cost escalations were observed.'

'Stopped for tea break': RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav escapes unhurt as his convoy hit by truck in Bihar; 3 security personnel injured
Tejashwi Yadav NEW DELHI: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav escaped unharmed when a speeding truck collided with two vehicles in his convoy in Bihar's Vaishali district early Saturday, injuring three security personnel. The incident occurred around 12.30am near Goraul on the Patna-Muzaffarpur national highway when the convoy had stopped for a tea break while returning to Patna from Madhepura. The opposition leader's vehicle was not struck in the accident, according to a senior police officer. The three injured security personnel were taken to the nearest government hospital, where their condition was reported as stable. Yadav visited the injured personnel at the hospital to check on their condition. "The accident took place when we were returning from Madhepura to Patna. We had stopped for a tea break near Goraul. A speeding truck rammed into two vehicles of my convoy, injuring three security personnel. I immediately alerted the district police and the administration. The accident took place just five feet away from my vehicle," Yadav told reporters at the hospital.
