Agniveers to get 20% reservation in police, PAC recruitment

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday decided to provide 20 percent reservation to Agniveers in the recruitment for several positions in the state police force as well as Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC).
The decision was taken at the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
According to the cabinet decision, the reservation will be applicable for appointment under several categories including constable police, constable PAC, mounted police and fireman.
Notably, the first batch of Agniveer recruits is set to retire next year in 2026. The earmarking of 20 percent reservation will enable them to find employment in UP police services.
Agniveers were recruited under the Agnipath scheme, a short-term military recruitment initiative launched by the Central government in June 2022, aimed at infusing young, tech-savvy and dynamic profile into the Indian armed forces — including the Army, Navy, and Air Force. As the law mandates, 25 percent of Agniveers will be retained by the Indian Armed Forces while the rest 75 percent of Agniveers will be given retirement from the services.
UP government's decision to give 20 percent reservation is targeted at this 75 percent lot, who will bow out from the armed forces after four years of service.
Also, a special age relaxation of up to three years will also be provided to Agniveers applying for these posts.
Reports suggest that UP Police is set to launch about 28,000 vacancies in police department soon, which will have appointment offers at the ranks of sub-inspector, inspector, jail warden, computer operator and other posts.
With UP cabinet earmarking 20 percent of vacancies for the Agniveers, they would become eligible to apply for permanent job in UP police and the PAC department.
Apart from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana government also approved a similar proposal earlier, where the Agniveers will be entitled to 20 percent reservation in various government posts.

As the city gears up to celebrate Bakrid on Saturday, Lucknow Police have made elaborate security arrangements to ensure peaceful observance of the festival, with a clear focus on preventing the sacrifice of banned animals and maintaining communal harmony. Joint commissioner of police (law & order) Babloo Kumar said that strict measures are in place to stop the sacrifice of restricted animals. 'Nagar Nigam teams have been deployed across the city, especially in sensitive areas, to ensure no banned animals are sacrificed. Volunteers from the local community have also been engaged to assist and facilitate the celebrations,' he stated. To strengthen coordination and community outreach, Peace Committees have been constituted at every police station in Lucknow. 'Meetings have been held at the level of DCPs involving Peace Committee members. Their concerns have been addressed, and the police department is working in coordination with local leaders to maintain calm and cooperation,' Kumar added. Highlighting the scale of security arrangements, the JCP said that 14 companies of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), one unit of Rapid Action Force (RAF), and large contingents of civil police have been deployed throughout the city. Sensitive areas like Aishbagh Eidgah, Teelewali Masjid, and Bada Imambada are under tight security cover, with barricading, RRF presence, and heavy patrolling. The western sector will have round-the-clock PAC deployment, and real-time surveillance will be carried out through CCTV cameras and drone monitoring. Police Response Vehicles (PRVs) are being actively routed for continuous patrolling. 'All officers are on high alert, and our goal is to ensure that the three-day Bakrid celebrations pass peacefully and with full religious dignity,' the JCP assured.

Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries, has announced an unconditional grant of Rs 151 crore to his alma mater, the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai. The announcement was made during his visit to the institute for the launch event of a biography titled Divine Scientist, chronicling the life and work of his former mentor, Professor M.M. Sharma. Ambani, who graduated from the institute in the 1970s when it was known as the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT), paid tribute to Prof. Sharma. Recalling his first lecture, Ambani said it left a lasting impression on his academic and professional journey. He praised Prof. Sharma not only as an academic giant but also as a quiet architect of India's economic liberalisation. 'Like my father, Dhirubhai Ambani, he had a burning desire to transform Indian industry — from a system of scarcity to global leadership,' Ambani remarked. 'These two visionaries believed that science, technology, and private enterprise could open the gates to national prosperity,' he added. Ambani described Sharma as a 'Rashtra Guru – a Guru of Bharat,' and credited him for influencing policymakers to dismantle the license-permit raj, enabling Indian industries to scale up, reduce imports, and compete globally. The Rs 151 crore donation was made in honor of Prof. Sharma's request. 'When he tells us something, we just listen. We don't think. He told me, 'Mukesh, you have to do something big for ICT.' This is my Guru Dakshina,' Ambani said. The contribution is expected to significantly strengthen ICT's research infrastructure and global collaborations.
