Sailing–Australia lead Germany SailGP, NZ stay ahead overall
Australia shrugged off a start-line penalty in the second race of the day, as Tom Slingsby's crew clawed back to finish third before out-duelling Spain to win race three and coming second to New Zealand in the day's fourth and last race.
Australia's tally of 32 points put them ahead of Peter Burling's New Zealand, who won race four. The Kiwis ended the day on 24 points, protecting their overall lead in the championship standings.
Quentin Delapierre's France finished third, level with New Zealand on 24 points, after being cleared to compete following overnight repairs to a damaged starboard rudder.
Rockwool Racing Denmark broke SailGP's racing and overall F50 speed record during the third race, as they nailed the start and accelerated to a massive 103.93 km/h.
Germany (Deutsche Bank) won the opening race to the delight of the Sassnitz crowd, a bright start for the team who began the weekend 11th overall on zero points.
Britain's Emirates GBR won race two and finished sixth on 19 points. Their hopes of a strong opening day were dashed after a collision with United States in the fourth race which left their F50 with a hole and tore away the U.S. boat's port bow.
No one was injured in the incident and the American team will be docked 12 event points.
Following their victory in Portsmouth, England last month, New Zealand will bid for a second successive SailGP win on Sunday.

Tennis-Swiatek downs Rybakina to reach maiden Cincinnati Open final
Aug 17, 2025; Cincinnati, OH, USA; Iga Swiatek (POL) returns a shot against Elena Rybakina (KAZ) during the Cincinnati Open at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. Mandatory Credit: Aaron Doster-Imagn Images (Reuters) -Third seed Iga Swiatek beat Elena Rybakina 7-5 6-3 on Sunday to reach her first Cincinnati Open final. The Pole had her hands full in the early stages of the 98-minute match but took advantage of a sudden dip in Rybakina's form to win four consecutive games and wrap up the first set before easing through the second. "That was a tough match. At the beginning the level was pretty crazy, we played so fast that sometimes we couldn't even run to the second ball because we played so fast," Swiatek said during her on-court interview. "But I was there to play with intensity and good quality and I am super happy with the performance. I served much better so for sure it helped and I wouldn't change anything." Ninth seed Rybakina used a cross-court forehand that caught the line for a break and then held for a 5-3 lead in the first set but a laser-focused Swiatek came back from the precipice and attacked the Kazakh's serve to draw level at 5-5. From there, the Wimbledon champion held serve before wrapping up the opener when she broke for a second time after a Rybakina backhand attempt came up well short. Rybakina, who enjoyed a swift victory over world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the previous round, was broken for a third time early in the second set after a backhand error put Swiatek ahead 3-1. Swiatek faced some push-back from Rybakina three games later but dug deep to recover from 15-40 down to protect her serve and reach 5-2 before wrapping it up on serve when Rybakina sent a forehand return long. Swiatek, who has not lost a set in Cincinnati, will next face the winner of Sunday's other semi-final between seventh seed Jasmine Paolini and Veronika Kudermetova. Soccer-Atletico floored by Espanyol's late double in Laliga
Soccer Football - LaLiga - Espanyol v Atletico Madrid - RCDE Stadium, Cornella de Llobregat, Spain - August 17, 2025 Espanyol's Pere Milla celebrates scoring their second goal with Omar El Hilali, Tyrhys Dolan and Edu Exposito REUTERS/Bruna Casas CORNELLA DE LLOBREGAT, Spain (Reuters) -Atletico Madrid started with a 2-1 defeat at Espanyol in LaLiga on Sunday as the hosts overturned Julian Alvarez's opener with late goals from substitutes Miguel Rubio and Pere Milla. Alvarez showed his quality in the 37th minute, curling a superb free kick into the top corner to give Atletico the lead after Espanyol's Leandro Cabrera had pushed Conor Gallagher. The Argentine came close again in the second half when he collected the ball inside the box, skipped past two defenders and fired a low shot against the bar. The hosts levelled in the 73rd when a long set-piece dropped into the box behind the defence, allowing Rubio to race onto the ball and slide it past goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Six minutes from time, Milla scored a spectacular winner, meeting a cross with a diving header that arched over Oblak and nestled inside the far post to complete the turnaround. Soccer-Vitinha goal guides PSG past Nantes in their Ligue 1 opener
NANTES, France (Reuters) -Paris St Germain began their Ligue 1 title defence with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Nantes on Sunday thanks to a second-half goal from their Portugal midfielder Vitinha. Fresh from their Super Cup triumph over Tottenham Hotspur in a shootout on Wednesday, PSG lacked their usual urgency in front of goal, going in at halftime without having carved out any real chances against a disciplined Nantes defence. PSG eventually broke the deadlock when Vitinha's strike from distance in the 67th minute took a deflection off Nantes defender Chidozie Awaziem and curled into the far corner. Nantes then began to concede more space and PSG thought they had doubled their lead minutes later through Goncalo Ramos but the striker's effort was ruled out for offside.
