Graham Arnold's Iraq appointment confirmed
Graham Arnold's appointment as Iraq coach has been confirmed, with the ex-Socceroos mentor's staff to include a former A-League coach and a member of Australia's 2006 FIFA World Cup squad.
Arnold has arrived in Baghdad to start the task of preparing Iraq for World Cup qualifiers next month against South Korea and Jordan.
The 61-year-old Arnold – who has taken over from sacked Spaniard Jesus Casas – resigned as Socceroos coach in September last year after having been in role since 2018.
He guided Australia to the 2022 World Cup, where the Socceroos reached the round-of-16 before being knocked out by eventual champions Argentina.
Iraq is currently in third place in Group B in third round of AFC World Cup qualifiers.
The Iraqis are a point behind second-placed Jordan and four points adrift of group leaders South Korea.
The top two nations from each of the three third-round groups will qualify for next year's World Cup.
A fourth round of AFC World Cup qualifiers will involve the nations finishing third and fourth in each group.
Arnold's coaching contract will be extended if he is successful in securing World Cup qualification for Iraq.
His coaching staff is set to include his former Socceroos assistant Rene Meulensteen, as well as ex-Newcastle Jets coach Robbie Stanton and former Socceroos goalkeeper Zejlko Kalac, who was part of Australia's 2006 World Cup squad.
Stanton, who only last weekend completed a two-year stint with the Jets, is already in Baghdad with Arnold.

Ange Postecoglou praised by Spurs captain Son Heung-min following sacking
Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has penned an emotional tribute to Ange Postecoglou following the Australian's sacking as the club's manager. Spurs axed Postecoglou on Saturday morning AEST, just over two weeks after he guided his side to a 1-0 win against Manchester United in the Europa League final. The win in Bilbao last month ended a 17-year trophy drought for Spurs. The Australian was "relieved of his duties", with Spurs citing the club's poor results in the Premier League as the key reason behind the decision. They finished 17th out of 20 teams. Writing on Instagram, Son said Postecoglou deserved to be remembered as a Spurs great. "You've [Postecoglou] changed the trajectory of this club," Son wrote. "You believed in yourself, and us, since day one and never wavered for a second. Even when others did. "You knew what we were capable of all along. You did it your way. And your way brought this club the best night it's had in decades. We will have those memories for life. "You trusted me with the captaincy. One of the highest honours of my career. It's been an incredible privilege to learn from your leadership up close, I am a better player and a better person because of you. "Ange Postecoglou, you are a Tottenham Hotspur legend forever. Thank you, mate." England international James Maddison also praised Postecoglou for the contribution he made to Spurs. Maddison thanked the former Socceroos head coach for helping shape his career. "Your unwavering self-belief and strong mindset is infectious and a massive reason in why you were the man to end this club's 17-year drought for a trophy," Maddison wrote on Instagram. "A family man with great morals and I have honestly learnt so much from you. More than you will probably ever know. All the very best." In its statement announcing Postecoglou's departure, Spurs said the club could not base the "decision on emotions aligned" to the Europa League triumph. "It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond," the statement read. "This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude. "We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision." Spurs said a decision on who would replace Postecoglou as manager would be "announced in due course".

Australian Olympic champion Jess Fox claims World Cup canoe gold in Spain
Australia's Olympic champion Jess Fox has won the women's C1 event at the World Cup leg in La Seu, Spain. The result gave Fox her 34th World Cup gold in the C1. "I'm super happy with that final. It was great to get out there and put out a fast run. It's a tricky course in La Seu," Fox said. Fox had missed the K1 final on day one in La Seu. But she bounced in the C1 to finish more than four seconds ahead of silver medallist Miren Lazkano of Spain. Fox achieved the win despite attracting a two-second penalty. Adding to the significance of her victory was the fact she had qualified ninth for the 12-paddler final. "I wanted to come back today and put down some good paddling," Fox said. "To win on the first World Cup is a great start but still four more races to go for the World Cup series and then the World Championships is the main goal of the year." The World Championships will be held in Penrith in October. Fox has won the Olympic C1 gold at the past two Games in Paris and Tokyo. She also took out the K1 final in Paris last year.
