Socceroos v Japan LIVE: Australia chase vital World Cup qualifying win in Perth
Go to latest What the Socceroos need to do to qualify Roy Ward The Socceroos can't qualify tonight but a win will all but assure them of second place in the group and a spot on the plane to North America in 2026. Going into the last two games of the group C qualifying, Japan has locked top spot and a World Cup spot while Australia, Saudi Arabia and, mathematically, Indonesia but are chasing the second automatic berth. The Socceroos are best placed to take second spot due to their record and their commanding nine-goal lead over the Saudis in goal difference. Saudi Arabia plays Bahrain early on Friday morning. Even if the Socceroos lose tonight and Saudis win both games, they will need two enormous goal-scoring efforts to get ahead of Australia on goal difference and they've only scored four goals in their previous eight qualifiers. With some help from here is how the scenarios for the Socceroos: Socceroos make it if: AUS beat JPN and SA lose or draw with BAH. AUS draw with JPN, SA lose to BAH and IND lose to CHN. If the Saudis and Australia both get the same result, their clash in Jeddah early on Wednesday morning will likely decide the group but both nations drop either or both game, then it will open the door for Indonesia to qualify in second place but they will need two wins and for Australia to lose both games 7.58pm Will the Socceroos qualify for World Cup- and if so, when? 7.58pm What the Socceroos need to do to qualify By Roy Ward The Socceroos can't qualify tonight but a win will all but assure them of second place in the group and a spot on the plane to North America in 2026. Graham Arnold's Iraq appointment confirmed
Graham Arnold's appointment as Iraq coach has been confirmed, with the ex-Socceroos mentor's staff to include a former A-League coach and a member of Australia's 2006 FIFA World Cup squad. Arnold has arrived in Baghdad to start the task of preparing Iraq for World Cup qualifiers next month against South Korea and Jordan. The 61-year-old Arnold – who has taken over from sacked Spaniard Jesus Casas – resigned as Socceroos coach in September last year after having been in role since 2018. He guided Australia to the 2022 World Cup, where the Socceroos reached the round-of-16 before being knocked out by eventual champions Argentina. Iraq is currently in third place in Group B in third round of AFC World Cup qualifiers. The Iraqis are a point behind second-placed Jordan and four points adrift of group leaders South Korea. The top two nations from each of the three third-round groups will qualify for next year's World Cup. A fourth round of AFC World Cup qualifiers will involve the nations finishing third and fourth in each group. Arnold's coaching contract will be extended if he is successful in securing World Cup qualification for Iraq. His coaching staff is set to include his former Socceroos assistant Rene Meulensteen, as well as ex-Newcastle Jets coach Robbie Stanton and former Socceroos goalkeeper Zejlko Kalac, who was part of Australia's 2006 World Cup squad. Stanton, who only last weekend completed a two-year stint with the Jets, is already in Baghdad with Arnold.

Cosmin Olăroiu appointed coach of UAE football team
The UAE Football Association has appointed Cosmin Olăroiu as the national team's Head Coach, it was announced on Saturday. The Associated said it signed a two-year contract with Romanian national Olăroiu. The new appointment comes less than a month after the team's former coach, Paulo Bento, was sacked just a day after the UAE's AFC World Cup qualifier victory against North Korea. Bento's backroom staff were also dismissed. Olăroiu has coached a series of decorated clubs in the region, including Al Hilal, Al Sadd, Al Ain, and Al Ahli. He has been coaching the Sharjah football team since 2021 after returning from his post in Jiangsu Suning under the Chinese Super League, where they won the Super League title for the first time in the club's history. He also guided Sharjah to the AFC Champions League Two final. The UAE national team is currently in third place in Group A of the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup with 13 points after Uzbekistan (17 points). Iran leads with 20 points. The UAE national team will face Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan in the final matches of the qualifiers on 5th and 10th June respectively.
