Govt rolls out initiatives to curb road crashes in 100 districts
NEW DELHI: The govt has identified 100 districts reporting high number of road crashes and has rolled out '
Data Driven Hyperlocal Intervention
(DDHI)' to undertake measures to curb crashes and deaths. The districts are spread across 18 states — the highest (19) is in Maharashtra, followed by 18 in Uttar Pradesh and 11 in Karnataka — based on the integrated
road accident data
collected since 2021.
The DDHI has been conceptualised by the Centre of Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS) at IIT-Madras. While most road crashes are attributed to human error, a significant proportion is due to localised challenges. Districts have been prioritised for intervention to address these challenges.
'This initiative will adopt a bottom-up approach, empowering
District Road Safety Councils
(DRSCs), led by their respective chairpersons, to lead decision-making and implementation.
The DDHI framework empowers councils to design targeted interventions tailored to district-specific road conditions, behavioural patterns, and geographical constraints,' an official statement issued by the CoERS said.
Addressing the launch event, Union road transport secretary V Umashankar said just policy decisions in Delhi can't bring down the number of crashes and deaths. Interventions have to be made at the district level, he said.

'Expensive solutions are always not the best solutions,' he said, highlighting the need for better analysis of the exact cause of crashes and required interventions.
The DDHI programme will involve building capacity and capability within selected districts; empowering district leadership to identify and implement critical road safety interventions; enabling sustainable, low-cost, high-impact solutions that are community-informed and data-backed; and establishing scientific impact assessment and review mechanism for the interventions taken up.

NMC seeks 240 more e-buses, begins scrapping old fleet
1 2 Nagpur: In a major push for sustainable public transport, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) submitted a proposal to Maharashtra govt seeking 240 additional electric buses under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme. This move coincides with civic body's phased scrapping of 237 old diesel-run buses procured over a decade ago under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). In a letter to urban development department, municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari requested 140 standard 12-metre electric AC buses and 100 midi 9-metre electric AC buses. The proposal follows a directive from the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA), which invited cities to indicate if they require additional electric alternatives under the central scheme. Earlier, NMC was allotted 150 electric buses under the scheme and is now looking to further bolster its clean-energy fleet. The civic body highlighted its preparedness to handle the additional buses, pointing to progress in building depot charging infrastructure and back-end power systems essential for electric operations. Confirming the development, Aapli Bus administrative officer Sonam Deshmukh said the detailed proposal, including technical specifications, infrastructure plans, and required undertakings, was submitted to the state-level steering committee for approval. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like サントリーロコモアが5,940→1,080円で試せる ロコモア こちらをクリック Undo "The expansion is expected to reduce emissions, improve air quality, and enhance daily commuting experience through quieter and more reliable transport," she said. NMC previously owned 539 buses, including 237 sanctioned under JNNURM. These are being phased out in two stages: the first phase involves auctioning 123 buses, followed by another 114 in the second phase. Currently, NMC operates 150 midi, 45 mini, and 230 electric buses. Of the electric fleet, 184 are AC buses and 46 are non-AC. These buses run on 129 routes with an average of 6,209 daily trips, covering nearly one lakh kilometres and serving around 1.17 lakh commuters each day. This year, another 400 AC electric buses will be added to the Aapli Bus fleet—250 from the state govt and 150 under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme. The first batch of 40 centrally sanctioned buses is expected to arrive starting July. Depots for these buses are being developed at Koradi and Khapri, while infrastructure for the 250 state-allotted buses is under construction at Wathoda.

EV cars, two-wheelers driving Lucknow closer to green goals
Lucknow: Gradual increase in the number of electric vehicles (EV cars and two-wheelers) on Lucknow roads in the last one year and other air pollution abatement measures have brought positive changes in the city's air quality. As compared to pre-monsoon period in 2024, the corresponding duration is less polluted this year, according to the 'Assessment of Ambient Air Quality of Lucknow City', a pre-monsoon 2025 report released by CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (CSIR-IITR) on the eve of World Environment Day on Wednesday. According to the report, nine localities of the state capital, comprising four commercial and residential each, and one industrial, were monitored in April-May (pre-monsoon period). The report highlighted that though there is a declining trend in pollution levels as compared to the corresponding period last year, the average pollutant concentration levels recorded were above the safe or permissible limits set by the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). According to NAAQS, the PM 10 concentration should not be more than 100 and PM 2.5 concentration should not be more than 60 micrograms per cubic metre of air. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo In all the nine localities, the air pollution levels were above the safe limits with Gomtinagar, Charbagh and Chowk being the most polluted localities. Highest average PM2.5 concentration was recorded in Gomtinagar (82.5 micrograms per cubic metre), followed by Indiranagar (74.5), Aliganj (71.6), and Vikasnagar (68.3). In commercial areas, Chowk's air was the most polluted with PM 2.5 concentration recorded 107.3 micrograms per cubic metre followed by Chargbagh (107), Aminabad (92.9) and Alambagh (86.5). This year, PM 2.5 concentration range was 68.3-114.5 micrograms while last year this range was 70.6-138.6 micrograms. Meanwhile, highest average PM 10 concentration in residential areas was recorded in Gomtinagar (131.3 micrograms), followed by Aliganj (126.8), Indiranagar 119.8, and Vikasnagar 117.2. In commercial areas, highest PM 10 concentration was recorded in Charbagh (187.6 micrograms) followed by Chowk (174.5), Aminabad (162.6) and Alambagh (151.7), respectively. "April and May are typically dry summer months in Lucknow city. Hence, there is a rise in surface temperature. Air turbulence results in loose soil and road dust resuspension into the atmosphere. Also, the ongoing road widening, pavements, flyover, and building construction activities in the city also contributed the entrainment of dust into the ambient air environment," the IITR report said. The report highlighted that the number of registered vehicles in the city has also gone up that is contributing to more jams, increased fuel consumption and relative traffic pollution along the city roads. Despite these factors, the particulate levels showed a declining trend from the previous year's pre-monsoon surveys. IITR attributed this trend to multiple action plans implemented to mitigate the ambient air pollution concentration. In 2024-25, more EV buses (7 more) and CNG buses (47 more) have been added to the public transport of the city. "The gradual increase in personal EV cars and two-wheelers has also been observed on city roads during the last one year indicating a shift to cleaner fuel vehicle use in the city. Besides, the number of passengers using the Lucknow metro has increased," the report said. It further added that several new flyovers, connecting roads, and outer roads have also shared the load of the city traffic. The outer ring roads around the city have provided uninterrupted routes for long-distance vehicles to avoid entry into the city. Deployment of almost 100 e-sweeping machines (slow moving vehicle) in the city by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) for road cleaning and dust suppression may also have contributed to the reduction in ambient particulate matter levels, the report added.

Tesla sales continue to fall in Europe's largest car market, here's the Chinese EV company hurting Tesla
Tesla sales in Germany , Europe's largest car market, plummeted by 36.2% in May, marking the fifth consecutive month of decline, according to data released by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). The agency reported that Tesla registered just 1,210 new vehicles last month, down from the same period a year ago. Despite Tesla's struggles, the overall market for battery electric vehicles (EVs) in Germany surged by 44.9%, driven by strong demand for competitors, notably Chinese automaker BYD. The decline in Tesla's sales extends beyond Germany, with significant drops across other European markets. In France, Tesla's registrations fell by a staggering 67%, while Spain saw a 29% decrease. In Sweden, Tesla's sales dropped 53%, with Volkswagen's new electric model, the ID.7, outselling Tesla's revamped Model Y by nearly two to one. Norway was a notable exception, where Tesla sold 2,600 vehicles—more than triple the previous year's figures—boosted by strong deliveries of the updated Model Y. Chinese EVs are hurting Tesla Meanwhile, Chinese EV giant BYD has been gaining ground in Europe. In Germany, BYD's sales soared ninefold to 1,857 units in May, making it the top-performing Chinese EV brand in the market. This growth comes despite the European Union imposing 17% tariffs on Chinese EVs in 2024. Across Europe, the appetite for electric vehicles remains robust, with Spain reporting a 72% increase in overall EV sales, even as Tesla's figures slid by 19%. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unfriendliest Countries in the World, Ranked TheDaddest Undo Analysts attribute Tesla's declining sales to a combination of factors, including growing competition from Chinese manufacturers and controversy surrounding CEO Elon Musk 's political activities, which have sparked protests among some European consumers.
