Tennis-Alcaraz eases past Medjedovic in Cincinnati for 50th win of the season
(Reuters) -Carlos Alcaraz eased past Serbia's Hamad Medjedovic 6-4 6-4 to reach the Cincinnati Open last 16 on Tuesday, battling the sweltering Ohio heat to notch his tour-leading 50th victory of the season.
The Spanish second seed also secured his 13th consecutive win at an ATP Masters 1000 tournament, converting three of seven break points in a deliberate, slow-paced contest.
Treated for neck pain after the first set, Medjedovic ramped up in the second to shorten rallies, out-hitting Alcaraz 25–16 on winners but committing 38 unforced errors to the Spaniard's 18.
"I know he's a really powerful player," Alcaraz said.
"His shots are incredibly hard to return. He has a big serve also. I know he doesn't like to run too much from side to side, so my plan was to make him run as much as I could."
Monte Carlo and Rome champion Alcaraz next faces Italian Luca Nardi as he continues his bid for an eight Masters 1000 title.
Earlier, Andrey Rublev rallied from a set down to edge Alexei Popyrin 6-7(5) 7-6(5) 7-5 in a fierce 3-1/2-hour battle.
The Russian ninth seed will play against Argentine Franciso Comesana, who claimed a stunning 6-7(4) 6-4 7-5 win over American Reilly Opelka.
In the women's draw, second seed Coco Gauff advanced after Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska withdrew from their third-round clash due to illness. The American will face Lucia Bronzetti, who beat 23rd seed Jelena Ostapenko 1-6 6-3 6-4.
It marked the second third-round walkover, following fellow Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk's withdrawal before her match against Polish third seed Iga Swiatek. The Wimbledon champion will take on Romanian Sorana Cirstea in the round of 16.

Soccer-Man Utd are in 'no man's land' due to constant managerial churn, says Rashford
(Reuters) -Manchester United's exiled forward Marcus Rashford has delivered a scathing assessment of the Premier League side's struggles, saying the club remains stuck in "no man's land" due to constantly changing coaches with different philosophies. Rashford has not played for United since December after a fallout with coach Ruben Amorim, with the England international spending the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa before joining Barcelona on another loan deal last month. The 27-year-old, once the lynchpin of United's attack, said the last few months away from the Old Trafford side have allowed him to "take a step back" and analyse why the club which finished a lowly 15th last season has been floundering. "People say that we've been in a transition for years but to be in a transition you have to start the transition. The actual transition hasn't started yet," Rashford said on 'The Rest is Football' podcast. "When Liverpool went through this, they got (Juergen) Klopp and they stuck with him. They didn't win in the beginning, people only remember his final few years when he was competing with (Manchester) City and winning the biggest trophies. "To start a transition, you have to make a plan and stick to it. This is where I speak about being realistic about what your situation is. We've had that many different managers, ideas and strategies in order to win that you end up in no man's land." United have not won the Premier League title since 2012-13, the last season of manager Alex Ferguson's career before he retired, while Liverpool have now equalled their tally of 20 league titles. United's managerial carousel since Ferguson's exit has included David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag, with each bringing vastly different playing styles. "When Ferguson was in charge, not only were there principles for the first team but they were for the whole academy," Rashford said. "They'd all understand the principles of playing the Man United way. Any team that's been successful over a period of time, they have principles that mean that any coach or player that comes in has to align to or add to the principles." United have won several cups since their last league title, but Rashford attributed them to squad quality rather than systematic success. "At times, I feel like United were hungry to win so we'll always try to adapt and sign players that fit the system. But that was reactionary," Rashford added. "If your direction is always changing you can't expect to win the league. You might win some cup tournaments, but it's because you have a good coach, good players and match winners in your team." JDT coach Munoz orders defence to wake up after Negri scare
PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta'zim coach Xisco Munoz has ordered his defence to tighten up after they survived a good scare against Negri Sembilan before winning 5-3 in their Super League match at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Tuesday. The Southern Tigers had to claw their way back from two goals down, conceded within 12 minutes. Despite JDT managing to draw level before half-time, Spaniard Munoz is not taking the uncharacteristic slip-up lightly. "We were sleeping a little in the early minutes and gave them the space to score from transitions," said Munoz. "We need to be more consistent, stronger in both areas, and prioritise clean sheets. "We are still in the early part of the league, so we need to learn about the different situations that we will be in, at home or away, and in the early minutes, we need to be aggressive," he said. Negri coach Nidzam said his players had shown commitment and quality on the pitch, but their opponents eventually proved too strong for them. "We had to face pressure from a very mature side. They played with quality and discipline," said Nidzam. "We had conceded several goals from set-pieces like corners, which exposed some weaknesses that need to be addressed." He reminded his players to take the positives from the match, as the early season still leaves plenty of opportunities for goals. "It's not easy, but we hope to rectify our weaknesses, especially in terms of our tactics and defensive discipline.'' The teams will now shift their focus to the FA Cup, with JDT playing University Malaya Damansara United on Saturday and Negri taking on Police on Monday.
