Darren Criss praises his wife after winning his first Tony Award
As brilliant acting and singing graced the stage for more than three hours, those doing the acting and singing were honored for their performances.
One of those was actor Darren Criss, best known for his television role as Blaine Anderson in 'Glee.'
During his acceptance speech for his first Tony Award for his role in 'Maybe Happy Ending,' Criss thanked those who have made the musical possible, which includes his co-stars, the director and the producers, but most importantly his wife, Mia Swier.
Criss and Swier have been married since February 2019. They share two children, a daughter born in April 2022 and a son born in June 2024.
As Swier embraced Criss before watching from the audience as her husband accepted the award for best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical, Criss called her 'the real hero for this remarkable journey.'
Criss said his wife was the one 'who took a massive swing on allowing me to do this and to allow this crazy upheaval in our life to make this logistically possible, and for bearing the brunt of raising two tiny friends under 3 so that I could raise a singing robot at the Belasco Theatre eight times a week.'
'Mia, you're the very pedestal that upholds the shiny, spinny bit in our lives,' Criss said while playing with the trophy, 'and your love and your support for me and our beautiful children, combined with the miracle of working on something as magical as 'Maybe Happy Ending' has been and will always be, award enough.'
Although this is Criss' first Tony Award, 'Maybe Happy Ending' is far from his first Broadway performance. He has also worked in 'How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,' 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch' and 'American Buffalo.'
