From tech-driven investigation to police training, new Uttar Pradesh DGP lists his priorities
Newly appointed director general of police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna on Monday outlined his priorities, emphasising on police training, technology-driven investigation, a zero-tolerance policy against crime, women's safety and empowerment, besides improving police services as well as giving importance to police welfare.
He also said stress will be on providing citizen-centric services.
In his first interaction with the media at UP Police headquarters, new DGP Rajeev Krishna said there will be no compromise on law and order. The focus will be on taking strong action against organised crime, including cyber crime, he said.
He also said women's safety and empowerment will be prioritised. Resolving public grievances and providing sensitive hearings will also be given importance, he said.
'There will be sensitive hearings of public grievances, and will ensure that Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are effective so that citizens' voices are heard,' he said, answering a question about concerns over the alleged insensitivity of some police officers.
The new state police chief also spoke about the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in crime investigation and public welfare work as well as police training.
'AI will be a game-changer in crime investigation, police training and public welfare as well as optimised use of police infrastructure,' he said.
The training of new police recruits and regular skill enhancement of the existing police personnel is also among the priorities, he said.
Quality training of police personnel and refresher courses is mandatory, he said.
He further said cybercrime is a significant problem. With the increased use of digital technology post-COVID-19, efforts will be made to utilise the latest technology to take action against cybercrime, he added.
Police welfare will be a priority, and efforts will be made to identify and utilise the skills of talented police personnel effectively, he said.
Krishna had proved his mettle after ensuring the smooth conduct of the mega police recruitment written examination involving 48,17,441 applicants, including 15 lakh women, with the use of AI enhancing security measures in August last year. This success helped the government bounce back from two back-to-back question paper leaks in February 2024. He used AI-enabled strong safeguards against any malpractice during the examination process and dismantled the plans of copying mafias and solver gangs.

An evening of celebration for RCB turned into a tragedy at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where a stampede claimed 11 lives, highlighting the cracks in the city's civic planning and crowd control systems. Citizens and experts alike have questioned the government's preparedness and the promise of 'Brand Bengaluru' to handle large gatherings, especially at high-footfall venues. Urban planners told ET that not just Bengaluru, but many civic agencies in Indian cities fail to have robust standing operating procedures (SOPs) for crowd management. 'We tend to employ very ad hoc measures to manage crowds, poor fencing, lack of proper pathways, poor lighting and lack of emergency services,' said Ujjvala Krishna, urban researcher at WELL labs. She added that there is a clear lack of foresight in building long-term infrastructure that anticipates such scale.'Bengaluru doesn't have an active master plan. The Regional and Metropolitan Area Master Plan for 2031 is still a draft. It's more like a reference. Other major metros like Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai have active master plans,' Krishna said. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), which makes rules for handling disasters in India, released a guide in 2014 to help state governments, local bodies, event organisers, and police manage large crowds safely. The guideline titled 'Managing Crowd at Events and Venues of Mass Gathering' suggests that before any big event, authorities should do a Rapid Venue Assessment to check preparedness. This includes an 11-point checklist evaluating aspects such as disaster preparedness, stakeholder coordination, crowd flow, safety, emergency response, ability to manage complexity, and potential for crowd growth, all rated on a scale from poor to best in urban planner from Bengaluru with over 30 years of experience in architecture and urban design said civic bodies are supposed to have SOPs. CM Saini's intervention reunites missing youth with grandmother
Panchkula: The intervention of Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini, along with swift action by Panchkula Police, led to the safe reunion of a missing 19-year-old youth with his grandmother and the successful recovery of Rs 1 lakh. New CP Bharti stresses on tightening policing to restore public faith in force
Mumbai: Speaking at the crime conference, the newly appointed city police commissioner, Deven Bharti, said there was a need to tighten policing, enhance discipline and restore public confidence in the force. Bharti attributed the drop in conviction rate in the city to poor crime scene management.
