New Russian ambassador tells Trump he will work to restore relations

(Reuters) -The new Russian ambassador to the United States, Alexander Darchiev, pledged to work to fully restore relations with Washington as he formally presented his credentials to President Donald Trump on Wednesday, Russian news agencies reported.
"Russia and the United States are destined, as great powers, to have non-confrontational peaceful existence," the agencies quoted Darchiev as telling a reception at Russian embassy after returning from the White House.
"It was a great honour for me, as Russian ambassador, to speak with President Trump and I assured him that I and this embassy under my direction will do everything to restore Russian-American relations and bring them back to normality and common sense."
He said Trump had found time to receive him on the eve of the Russia Day holiday - which marks Russia's 1990 declaration of sovereignty, more than a year before the Soviet collapse.
Darchiev has already completed two diplomatic stints in the United States and served as ambassador to Canada from 2014 to 2021. Like other senior Russian diplomats, he has in recent years issued strong public denunciations of the United States and the West.
Washington's relations with Moscow plunged to their lowest in decades under Trump's predecessor, Joe Biden, over the Kremlin's invasion of Ukraine. Ties have improved since Trump took office, with the two sides in contact to discuss a possible resolution to the conflict.
"We have at last moved from monologues under the previous administration and a general absence of discussion to quite a pragmatic conversation, a complicated conversation," Darchiev was quoted as saying.
The ambassador said his meeting with the U.S. president was a short one as dictated by protocol.
"Nonetheless, our discussion was very constructive," the agencies quoted him as saying.

'The next round of Iran-US indirect talks is being planned for next Sunday in Muscat,' foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said in a statement Tuesday, adding foreign minister and chief negotiator Abbas Araghchi would this week attend the Norway's Oslo Forum, a gathering of conflict mediators. Iran and the US have held five rounds of talks since April to thrash out a new nuclear deal to replace the 2015 accord with major powers that Trump abandoned during his first term in 2018. On May 31, after the fifth round of talks, Iran said it had received 'elements' of a US proposal for a nuclear deal, with Araghchi later saying the text contained 'ambiguities'. Iran said on Monday the US proposal was 'lacking elements' reflective of the previous negotiations and that it would present a 'reasonable, logical and balanced' counter-proposal to the US through mediator Oman. Trump has said new US-Iran talks this week could clarify if a nuclear deal is possible to avoid military action. He added that the latest meeting with Iran was expected Thursday, although a source familiar with preparations said it would more likely be on Friday or Saturday. Iran and the US have recently been locked in a diplomatic standoff over Iran's uranium enrichment, with Tehran defending it as a 'non-negotiable' right and Washington calling it as a 'red line'. Iran currently enriches uranium to 60%, far above the 3.67% limit set in the 2015 deal and close though still short of the 90% needed for a nuclear warhead. Western countries, including the US, have long accused Iran of seeking to acquire atomic weapons, while Tehran insists its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes.

Trump warming up to contacts with Kim: White House
US President Donald Trump would welcome communications with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un after having had friendly relations with Kim during his first term, the White House said. 'The president remains receptive to correspondence with Kim Jong-un,' White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Wednesday. She was responding to a report by Seoul-based NK News, a website that monitors North Korea, that the North's delegation at the United Nations in New York had repeatedly refused to accept a letter from Trump to Kim. Trump and Kim held three summits during Trump's 2017-2021 first term and exchanged a number of what Trump called 'beautiful' letters. In June 2019, Trump briefly stepped into North Korea from the demilitarised zone with South Korea. Little progress was made, however, at reining in North Korea's nuclear programme. Trump acknowledged in March that Pyongyang is a 'nuclear power'. Since Trump's first-term summitry with Kim ended, North Korea has shown no interest in returning to talks. The attempts at rapprochement come after the election in South Korea of a new president, Lee Jae-myung, who has pledged to reopen dialogue with North Korea. As a gesture of engagement on Wednesday, Lee suspended South Korean loudspeakers blasting music and messages into the North at the Demilitarised Zone along their shared border. Death toll in Air India crash rises to over 290

The authorities had warned earlier that there could be casualties on the ground too, with multiple buildings damaged and residents caught in the crash zone. Earlier, city police chief GS Malik said at least 204 bodies have been recovered from the crash site. Meanwhile, senior BJP leader and former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani is said to have died in the Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday (June 12). He was 68. Union Minister and Gujarat BJP president CR Patil said "Vijay Rupani was "among victims" in this incident. He says the airline will work round the clock to support passengers, crew and their families, as well as investigators. Air India has also announced two special relief flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Ahmedabad to assist the next of kin of passengers and airline employees affected by the AI171 crash. The airline says in a post on X that the flights would provide urgent support and access to those who need to reach Ahmedabad. We are deploying a multidisciplinary investigation team to India to support the Indian led investigation,' it says, according to a statement carried by AFP. Tata Group chairman N. Chandrasekaran said the multinational conglomerate is 'deeply anguished' by the Air India Flight 171 tragedy, as he pledges support to those affected. In a statement on X, Chandrasekaran says the group will provide one crore rupees to the families of each person killed in the crash.
