Big Rock Blue Marlin boaters share their superstitions for luck

Yahoo14-06-2025
MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WNCT) — Some boaters in the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament have their own superstitions to ensure good sailing.
Some boaters rules for good luck are:
Wearing the same shirt or pair of socks
'Each boat has its own little, little superstition, so to speak. You know, everybody wears colored socks and they may wear white socks and black socks,' weight master Randy Gregory said. 'Who knows? It's just crazy superstition. Yeah. Sometimes they make them bite, sometimes it doesn't.'
'My favorite one is I have a red big blue marlin sure that I love, and I have called striped marlin on the fly in Cabo San Lucas,' Big Rock board member Tommy Bennett said. 'I've called Blue Marlin on the floor in Guatemala wearing that shirt. And it is my my lucky fishing shirt.'
Throwing Oreo cookies and beer over the bow of the boat to feed the fish
'You take Oreo cookies over the bar You take them and you present them to the Billfish gods and you come in there like that and then, you know, you shake up some beers and you spray it off the stern,' weight master Randy Gregory said. 'You know, it kind of attracts the fish.'
Never bring bananas on the boat
'It's a really old wives tale. Bananas are not really easy, and they cause other fruit around them to rot. I think it dates back to colonial days,' research assistant at NC State Paul Rudershausen said. 'So you should definitely not take bananas on a boat. Especially on Friday the 13th.'

Former Notre Dame OL will have to wait to start his NFL career following an injury

Sometimes things happen that I don't understand. One minute I'm living out my dream in an NFL stadium, the next I'm having season-ending surgery. I will be back stronger than ever. God's plan is greater. While former Notre Dame offensive lineman Zeke Correll didn't finish his career in South Bend, it's hard to say that he's a NC State product after playing there for just his graduate season. The Minnesota Vikings opted to sign him as an undrafted free agent, and it looked like he had a solid chance to make the roster. Unfortunately, Correll fractured his ankle on Saturday, and got waived on Tuesday, adding insult to injury. He went to social media to update everyone on his status, with surgery on deck which will prevent him from making his NFL debut for at least another year. Correll was clearly disappointed with this injury, but we know that he is going to do everything in his power to make a quick return to the field, albeit with another team. Hopefully Correll is able to make a full recovery and live out his NFL dreams, as many are rooting for the former Irish offensive lineman to do so. Intra-state rivalry: Here's how to buy East Carolina vs. NC State football tickets

College football is almost back, and with it, some of the top rivalries. It's one of the things that makes the NCAA so fun to watch. The rivalries are kicking off early with East Carolina vs. NC State. The Wolfpack didn't have a great 2024-25 bid, finishing in 10th place in the ACC. East Carolina performed slightly better, coming in fifth in the AAC. But they ended up facing each other in the Military Bowl, where the Pirates came out on top. We'll get to see the rematch at the start of the season. A lot of eyes could be on this matchup as a brawl broke out in the last minute of the Military Bowl. Tensions will be high. NC State's quarterback CJ Bailey is returning, along with a second-year running back and most of their wide receivers. East Carolina has a good mix of players returning after an already competitive 2024 season in the AAC. 2025 NC State Football Predictions: Wolfpack Ranked 53rd in RJ Young's Ultimate 136

College Football 2025 NC State Football Predictions: Wolfpack Ranked 53rd in RJ Young's Ultimate 136 Published Aug. 10, 2025 9:00 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link This isn't your average college football ranking. My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list: Who do I think is good? Why do I think they're good? What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations? Here is a look at where NC State lands in my Ultimate 136. Team ranking: 53 Last year's ranking: 30 Top player: QB CJ Bailey: Second among all FBS true freshmen in pass yards with 2,413; ranked eighth in the ACC in total touchdowns with 22. [NC State's 2025 schedule] RJ's take: If last season felt like an anomaly for the Wolfpack, that's because it was. NC State has been bankable for at least seven wins in 12 of the last 15 years and suffered just three losing seasons during that time. And this season they could reach bowl eligibility by Week 6 with Duke being perhaps the toughest opponent the Wolfpack face before playing Notre Dame on October 11. They'll be helped by returning the same starter at quarterback as last year for the first time in seven years. Bailey entered midseason after Grayson McCall went down with injury and played admirably as a freshman, completing 64.9 percent of his passes for 2,413 yards with 17 TDs and 10 INTs. With the better part of a season of experience, he ought to be good enough to return the Wolfpack to the nine-win total they're used to seeing. ADVERTISEMENT NC State Win Total Odds: Over 6.5 (+110) Under 6.5 (-134) Have an issue with my rankings? Think your alma mater is too low, or your school's rival is too high?
