Cedar Hill's "Team of Destiny" heads to state semifinals; Lady Longhorns' first appearance in 15 years

CBS News25-02-2025

The Cedar Hill girls' basketball team is in the state semifinal for the first time since 2010.
The Lady Longhorns are coming off a historic win over the defending 6A Division 1 champs in Duncanville, and coach Nicole Collins has gone as far as to say they are the "Team of Destiny."
Now just two wins away from the ultimate goal, the players said they're as locked in as they've ever been.
"Coach always tells us, 'Don't ever stay on the high highs or the low lows,'" Lady Longhorns forward Brooklyn King said. "Obviously Friday was a really high high for us, but It's just back to business. We got two more games and we didn't come this far to just drop the ball."
The Lady Longhorns are ranked 10th in the state, making them the only ranked team left standing.
Collins has made It known just how special she thinks this group is and that the "Team of Destiny" name didn't come from out of nowhere.
She said the team participated in a basketball boot camp long before the first tip-off of the season, which she thinks is partly why they have had success this season.
"Our motto this year was just being a trailblazer and trying to be the first to do something that hasn't been done before," Collins said. "We've had a few teams that have come through here and gone to state, so we've gotten over the hump."
But if you ask the players, what they have up their sleeve has nothing to do with X's and O's or how good their field goal percentage is.
Instead, it has everything to do with the bond they've made off the court.
"There's no division anywhere," King said. "We're very welcoming with each other… It's just so connected, and I just feel that's why we click on the court: because we know each other on and off the court."
"We're very close," Lady Longhorns forward Rylan Jones said. "I think that's why we're having such a successful season, actually. It's just an exciting thing for all of us to get to go through this together with this specific team. We all really love each other."
The Lady Longhorns will tip off their state semifinal game against Plano East on Tuesday at the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center In Fort Worth.

Nathan Collins happy to see Ireland carry momentum into World Cup qualifying

Nathan Collins is relishing the prospect of heading into the Republic of Ireland's World Cup qualification campaign with momentum despite surviving a scare in Luxembourg. Heimir Hallgrimsson's men brought down the curtain on their season's fixtures with a disappointing 0-0 friendly draw with the nation ranked 91st by FIFA on Tuesday evening, in the process extending their modest unbeaten run to four games. Advertisement They will have to be significantly better if they are to emerge from September's opening qualifiers against Hungary in Dublin and Armenia in Yerevan with positive results, but the fact that they will set out having lost just once in six games is a huge plus for Brentford defender Collins. He said: 'When we come back in September we're going in with great momentum. We haven't lost. 'We know there are more things to work on, we know there are things we can get better at, but at the end of the day, going in unbeaten in the last four, going into a qualifier, I've never experienced that myself. It will be a nice feeling.' Advertisement Asked how big the Hungary game will be, Collins added: 'I can't wait for it. The fans will be at it. What we've created, the bond with the fans, is great. 'I'm looking forward to be back at the Aviva, hunger straight off the bat. We've a massive game.' That said Collins, who captained Ireland at the Stade de Luxembourg, knows they are slightly fortunate to have preserved their unbeaten run after a difficult evening, somewhat unexpectedly so after Friday night's encouraging display in a 1-1 draw with Senegal at the Aviva Stadium. Had it not been for Bristol City keeper Max O'Leary, who made vital saves from Danel Sinani and substitute Vincent Thill on his senior international debut six years after his first call-up, Hallgrimsson's men might have lost. Advertisement They might have won too with both Collins and substitute Jack Taylor hitting the woodwork, but that would perhaps have been unjust. Collins admitted: 'We're lucky that it still carries momentum. The way we played, we could have lost that. We didn't deserve to win, but to sit in and defend the way we did, we didn't deserve to lose. 'Credit to Max O'Leary, he's been in the camp a long time and not got his caps, but he made two great saves. (Matt Doherty) got a tackle in and (Jason Knight) was class in front (of the back four). 'We weren't at our best, but we defended well, dug in and had our chances. We wanted to be not as passive and wanted to get after them more, but we weren't at that. 'Considering how we were nowhere near our best, we still dug out a clean sheet. But we all know that was nowhere near our best and we have so much more to give.'

Texans 'offensive triplets' among the best in the NFL for 2025

Texans 'offensive triplets' among the best in the NFL for 2025 The Houston Texans' offense is looking to respond with secondary options in the passing game heading into the 2025 NFL season. While C.J. Stroud and Nico Collins are considered among the best duos in the league, there are questions at the other receiver spots, plus the tight end role after a down year from Dalton Schultz. Running back Joe Mixon is coming off his first 1,000-yard season since joining the Texans, marking also the first 1K runner for the franchise since 2019. While dealing with a foot injury, he's expected to be back at full speed for the start of the regular season and remain the bell cow bruiser. The Texans might have questions outside of their star trio, but it remains one of the better units in the league entering the summer. Sports Illustrated agreed with the sentiment based on its rankings of all 32 trios for the upcoming season. Albeit not top-five, the website listed Houston just on the outside at No. 6. "The Texans didn't live up to their offseason hype, but their offense remains full of excellent weaponry," SI wrote. "Stroud had a bit of a statistical sophomore slump, but that's largely because the offensive line was atrocious, allowing the league's third-most sacks. Stroud still managed to throw for 3,727 yards and 20 touchdowns, while Collins totaled 1,006 yards in 12 games." Collins, who signed a three-year extension ahead of the 2024 season, was well on his way to leading the league in receptions and receiving yards before a hamstring injury sidelined him for five games. He still managed to finish with over 1,000 receiving yards and seven touchdowns while leading Houston in every category. Part of Stroud's "sophomore slump" was caused by the lack of consistent weapons. Collins wasn't the only receiver to miss multiple games, leaving the 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year out to dry. Tank Dell missed three games and likely won't return in 2025 after undergoing multiple leg surgeries. Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs was out after eight games because of a torn ACL. Mixon even missed three games that cost him a potential 1,200-yard season. He was one of the hottest running backs to begin the year, but an ankle injury had him miss a majority of September and early October. At his peak, there's no reason to believe that Mixon can't be a top-12 running back. The Texans could prove to be a one-year fluke offensively if Christian Kirk or one of the rookies step up, but at least the trio will keep pace in the AFC South for the meantime.
