Gurgaon: "Our lives have become hell," said Sanjay Harsana, who lives in Bandhwari village, a kilometre from the site of the landfill that has been up in flames for the past three days.
Residents living within a 3km radius of the landfill told TOI they have been inhaling toxic fumes from the blaze for over 72 hours. Many of them said they have breathing difficulties and irritation in their throat and eyes.

The waste plant, which was set up along the Gurgaon-Faridabad Road in 2012, has consistently caused pollution – whether it was to the Aravalis surrounding it, or now, to the air they breathe.

"When the plant came, we were promised development and cleanliness. Instead, we got pollution and disease. These fires have been happening every year. There is no safety equipment. Nothing. They have just fooled people, making our lives hell," Harsana said on Monday.
Residents of nearby Gwal Pahari, Baliawas, Behrampur and Sector 58 had similar complaints.
Vaishala Rana, who lives in a housing society three kilometers away, said, "We saw thick smoke on Sunday morning. This isn't the first time. Every time there's a fire, we suffer too."
Many said the govt hasn't resolved this issue despite multiple directions by courts.
"Ministers visit during elections and make big promises, but after that, they vanish. Don't we deserve to breathe clean air. How is it not a crime? So many people are breathing toxic air because of the fire. Why is it not an emergency," asked Subhash Rawat of Bandhwari.
Villagers said they will block roads and sit on a hunger strike if things don't change soon.
The fire, which has been raging since April 26, erupted just days after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) pulled up municipal corporations of Gurgaon and Faridabad for lack of progress is managing garbage piled up at the Bandhwari landfill.
The civic bodies, the tribunal said, have "no consistent plan" for clearing legacy waste and setting up treatment facilities to manage waste generated in the two NCR cities.
Currently, most solid waste from Gurgaon and Fairdabad is dumped at Bandhwari.
The tribunal subsequently directed the corporations to give details of work done by them to clear garbage and a timeline for remediation of legacy waste still lying there.
MCG has said that it is drafting a cost assessment report to take approval from Haryana govt and engage more agencies to process the city's daily waste.

Kochi corporation plans to entrust abattoir project at Kaloor to new agency due to delays
Kochi: With Impact Kerala, the agency entrusted with the construction of a modern slaughterhouse in Kaloor, failing to start the project, Kochi corporation is exploring alternatives to set up the facility. The corporation authorities have started talks with a Kolkata-based firm to set up the abattoir. Though the project was designed more than a decade ago, the work was entrusted to Impact Kerala and the agency was sitting on the project for the past two years. "The Impact Kerala authorities are not responding to our queries. Recently, they informed us about roping in a contractor to start the work. When we asked them to brief us about the project, they failed to do so," said corporation health standing committee chairman T K Asharaf. Though TOI contacted Impact Kerala officials regarding the progress of the project, they didn't respond. "We will be able to take a final decision on the project only if the agency makes a presentation. If they fail to give the details, we are planning to rope in another agency. We have already held talks with a Kolkata-based firm. If Impact Kerala is ready to continue with the project at Kaloor, we can entrust the work on an abattoir at Marakkadavu in Mattancherry to the Kolkata-based firm," Asharaf said. The condition of the existing abattoir owned by the corporation at Kaloor continues to be pathetic. The pollution control board (PCB) ordered the closure of the slaughterhouse citing shortcomings in treating the waste generated while culling the animals. The corporation authorities were forced to close down the facility on Sept 26, 2022. Following the corporation's request to run the existing abattoir for six more months to facilitate the local body to construct a new one, PCB granted the nod for operating the slaughterhouse on a temporary basis. 18,000 kg of waste collected from beaches during fortnight-long drive in Guajrat
Gandhinagar: More than 18,350kg of waste, including a large quantity of plastic, was collected from the beaches of the state in a fortnight-long drive from May 22 to June 5, the state govt informed on Friday. The drive to clean beaches was undertaken by the Gujarat Environment Management Institute (GEMI) with participation from citizens. An official statement said that cleaning activities were conducted at coastal sites of Dwarka, Shivrajpur, Umargam, Dandi, Dumas, Mahuva, Porbandar, and Ravalpir. The initiative was supported by the Gujarat Pollution Control Board, local municipalities, forest officials, NGOs, and industries. A number of awareness programmes were also held for the responsible disposal of waste, the statement said. With a 1,600-km coastline, Gujarat has several popular beaches like Shivrajpur (a Blue Flag-certified beach), Dwarka, Dumas, Tithal, Mandvi, Ghoghla, Somnath, Dandi, Porbandar, and Umargam. Some of these beaches also hold historical and ecological significance. This waste endangers marine life such as turtles, crabs, and coastal birds, apart from affecting the livelihood of fishermen. The statement said that apart from the cleaning of beaches, awareness was created through 37 street plays performed in urban and rural areas of 15 districts like Aravalli, Rajkot, Bharuch, Kutch, Dahod, Junagadh, and Dang. These performances reached over 4,100 people, educating them about plastic hazards and promoting eco-friendly practices. Ten residential societies of Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad also joined in the waste collection drive, with about 450 residents collecting more than 250kg of recyclable plastic, the statement said.
