Shaquille O'Neal Incorrectly Declares NBA Legend Has Passed Away

Yahoo21-04-2025

Basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal is no stranger to the spotlight. Revered for his dominance during the early 2000s, O'Neal was the centerpiece of a Los Angeles Lakers dynasty that captured three consecutive NBA titles. He also added a fourth championship in Miami before wrapping up a career that spanned six franchises. Since retirement, he has become a beloved television personality on TNT's Inside the NBA—but not without the occasional misstep.
On Sunday night, O'Neal found himself on the wrong end of an awkward moment during the postgame show following the Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Miami Heat playoff game.

The panel was celebrating Ty Jerome's standout 28-point performance off the bench, placing him among the top four for most points in a playoff debut as a reserve—alongside Malik Monk, Ben Gordon, and Billy Ray Bates.

As the crew reminisced about Bates, co-host Charles Barkley praised the former Portland Trail Blazer, calling him 'built like a truck,' before asking, 'Is he still alive?'
The question was met with a moment of silence and awkward laughter, until O'Neal confidently responded, "He passed away."
However, that statement was incorrect. A fan quickly took to X to fact-check O'Neal, confirming that Billy Ray Bates is still alive.
"Billy Ray Bates is definitely still alive," the fan wrote.
The 68-year-old is indeed still alive, per his Basketball Reference page. This moment has been trending on social media, sparking jokes online and some light criticism of O'Neal. Bates played four seasons in the NBA, with his final games coming with the Lakers.

The NBA brilliantly spun the NBA Finals' low TV ratings into a win

The NBA brilliantly spun the NBA Finals' low TV ratings into a win So far, the 2025 NBA Finals are on track to be one of the league's least-watched championship series this century. Of course, I'm only stating a fact. I'm not saying any NBA fan should actually care about low TV ratings, because you shouldn't. You don't work for the NBA. Watch the games or don't. It doesn't mean a tangible thing to you. But even as fewer people tune into the Oklahoma City Thunder's and Indiana Pacers' battle on the NBA's biggest stage, the league has already found a brilliant way to spin its "smaller" television audience. Is it true that, on average, fewer people are watching these Finals than normal? Yes. Absolutely. According to NBA PR, however, that doesn't change the fact that both Game 1 and Game 2 were easily the most-watched programs in all of television since the start of May. Oh, and for those tracking young people's attention spans, almost half of everyone aged 18-34 who watched TV during the runtimes of Game 1 and Game 2 were actually watching the Finals. Throw in some massive social media engagement, and it sure seems like concerns about the NBA Finals' low TV ratings have been overblown. That, or the NBA's PR just really knows how to spin good news: These are legitimately praiseworthy bullet points about the NBA's success with its current championship series. I'm not sure how the NBA came to these concrete conclusions, especially with streaming involved, and most major television networks and platforms not really running their best shows in the spring and summer. Still, these numbers are eye-opening. From my vantage point, it sure seems like the league is a lot healthier than some people want to believe

Dwyane Wade Doesn't Deny NBA Draft Lottery Is Rigged

Three months after trading Luka Dončić to the Lakers in what many are calling a historic robbery, the Dallas Mavericks somehow won the lottery. With the No. 1 pick, Duke sensation Cooper Flagg is now expected to land in Dallas, unless GM Nico Harrison entertains another surprising trade. Against all odds — 1.8%, to be exact — the Dallas Mavericks emerged as the winners of the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery. But was it sheer luck — or something more? Dallas' improbable lottery win has sparked speculation among NBA fans, with some suggesting the draft was rigged. Dwyane WadeJasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports Utah Jazz fans are among the most frustrated, having endured the league's worst season only to drop to the No. 5 pick despite being tied for the best odds. To make matters worse, Miami Heat legend Dwyane Wade, who is a co-owner of the Jazz, stirred controversy by hinting at a possible rigging in an interview with USA TODAY. Advertisement "It's a business," Wade responded when asked whether he believed the lottery was rigged. "I'm not saying anyone is doing anything because I'm not a witness in it. But this is a business that we are a part of. And I think people forget that in the competition of sports and what we love, because we grow up playing sports, and it's not a business when we grow up. But when you're in the NBA, it's a business. And the business has to do its best job to make sure that ... you know. It's taken care of. "So I don't know," the three-time NBA champion continued. "I'm just saying I think it was 2008 when I thought we (the Heat) were gonna get the No. 1 pick. We ended up getting the No. 2 pick. ... But the Chicago Bulls, just like Dallas, they had a small percentage and ended up jumping into the top four. And in my mind, I said, 'Derrick Rose is the No. 1 pick in the draft. The Bulls are going to get first.' And the Bulls did so — maybe that's a coincidence."
