How to watch this weekend's Mets at Phillies series as the NL East race heats up

New York Times5 hours ago

Friends of 'Seinfeld' versus legends of 'Always Sunny' lore. The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies are tethered together for an intriguing three-game weekend series, and the rivals start Friday's action tied atop the NL East. New York has the best collective ERA in baseball, even amid some recent stumbles. Philly is fantastic in its home park, with or without Bryce Harper (wrist). The winner of this matchup gets a leg up in the division and temporary authority over sandwich cheese selection.
Fox is available over the air with a broadcast antenna. 'Sunday Night Baseball' can also be streamed on ESPN+.
Both teams have star-laden lineups worth tuning in for. The trio of Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso regularly turn Flushing into a red carpet affair. In Philadelphia, Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber are slashing at the top of the league yet again. Naturally, MLB broadcast partners want a piece of this action.

Friday's opener streams via Apple TV+, which requires a separate subscription — a pressure point for the sport's most dedicated fans. Saturday's showdown is on Fox, although a regionalized coverage split means viewers out west will get the Kansas City Royals at San Diego Padres. ESPN hosts the series finale on 'Sunday Night Baseball,' with Jon Sciambi assuming his usual play-by-play duties; he's joined in the booth by former pro Eduardo Pérez and Mets great David Cone. Without any regional broadcasts here, we're sadly deprived of uncut Gary Cohen-Ron Darling energies, and we won't see John Kruk bond with his best friend.
The headliner is right-hander Zack Wheeler on Friday night. The former No. 6 overall pick was a rising star in New York and recorded a 3.77 ERA across five Mets seasons. He then signed with the team's archenemy after the 2019 season and truly leveled up in Philadelphia — almost a full run knocked off his ERA (2.92), with 1,009 strikeouts and two Cy Young runner-up finishes. Wheeler led the National League in WHIP last year at 0.955; his 2025 mark is somehow considerably better at 0.886. The Phillies' ace enters Friday's home start in the 99th percentile for pitching run value. He is serving up premium unleaded nightmare fuel to opposing batters.
David Peterson is set to start for the visitors on Sunday. He's been fantastic thus far and specializes in deflating, quieting ground-ball outs. The southpaw threw a complete-game shutout against the Washington Nationals on June 11.
NYM-PHI from the New York Times archive — 2007:
'New York lost a seven-game lead in the National League East with 17 to play. 'It's embarrassing,' closer Billy Wagner said. 'That's the big thing.'
The Mets went 5-12 to close out the season; the Phillies, a beleaguered franchise that had its own historic collapse in 1964, went 13-4. They capitalized as the Mets' pitching crumbled, their defense disintegrated and their offense, potent at times, fell silent at inopportune moments.' (Ben Shpigel)

From their first-ever head-to-head playoff series — 2024:
'The sellout crowd greeted Lindor with chants of 'M-V-P!' The fans did their part, rising to the occasion — even singing along to 'My Girl,' Lindor's walkup tune — to set the stage. Then Lindor delivered with the latest version of the biggest hit of the Mets' season …
Citi Field may never have been louder. The place erupted. It was only fitting that Lindor came through with the hit that sent the Mets to the NLCS.' (Tim Britton)

Angels Make Unfortunate Jorge Soler Announcement Before Yankees Game

Angels Make Unfortunate Jorge Soler Announcement Before Yankees Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Angels beat the New York Yankees on Monday and Tuesday, but it was no thanks to outfielder Jorge Soler. The 33-year-old is just 1-for-9 in the series and is slashing .119/.196/.119 with three RBI over 13 games in June. Advertisement Los Angeles acquired the former All-Star from the Atlanta Braves on October 31 in exchange for right-handed pitcher Griffin Canning. The two-time World Series champion has had a successful career, as his next homer will be his 200th since entering the big leagues. However, he hasn't been close to the player he was in 2019, when he tallied 48 homers and 117 RBI for the Kansas City Royals. The Angels revealed an unfortunate Soler update before Wednesday night's bout with the Yankees, via The Orange County Register's Jeff Fletcher. The Angels won Monday and Tuesday's games by a combined score of 5-0, and they're 6-4 in their last 10. They're now a half-game behind the Texas Rangers for third place in the AL West and two games out of a Wild Card spot. Los Angeles will play New York again on Thursday before hosting the Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox, and Washington Nationals. After that, it will hit the road to face the Atlanta Braves and Toronto Blue Jays before hosting the Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks. Petition calls for California to end policy allowing transgender students to compete in girls' sports

Some female high school athletes want an end to a policy that allows transgender athletes to compete in girls' sports, claiming it has created unfair competition. "Right here, right now, we are hand-delivering a petition signed by 20,074 people," California Family Council outreach director Sophia Lorey said. Female high school athletes, their families and supporters brought a petition to a California Interscholastic Federation meeting in Costa Mesa on Friday. The California Family Council organized the petition and a rally outside the meeting. On its website, the council wrote that its mission is "advancing God's design for life, family and liberty through California's church, capitol and culture." Among the athletes was Taylor Starling, who sued the Riverside Unified School District, claiming she was demoted from the varsity cross country team when a transgender student took her spot. "Girls like me are being told to smile, sit down and be quiet and give up what we've worked so hard for," Starling said. "And now, we're the ones being excluded from our own teams. Girls' sports were made to give us a level playing field. Right now, that's not happening in the state of California." Last month, CIF rules were changed at the state track and field championships, where Jurupa Valley High School transgender athlete AB Hernandez competed. Prior to the meet, a new policy was put in place allowing an additional female student to compete and medal in events where Hernandez had qualified. In a news release, a state spokesperson said CIF made the decision to pilot an entry process. "When girls are forced to share the starting line, the locker room or the podium with males, that's not inclusion," Lorey said. "It's injustice and California girls are paying the price." CIF said its mission is to provide students with the opportunity to belong and compete in compliance with the law, irrespective of the gender listed on the student's records.

Entering the game, the Fever were in a three-way tie for first in the WNBA Commissioner's Cup Eastern Conference standings with the New York Liberty and the Atlanta Dream. Their win over New York on Saturday helped them climb, but it was the Liberty's win over Atlanta on Tuesday that gave Indiana the spot in the Commissioner's Cup championship. Indiana announced the news with a post on social media. "heading to the Commissioner's Cup Championship Game," the Fever wrote on X. Clark and the Fever will play in the Commissioner's Cup Championship Game on July 1, where they will likely face the first-place team in the Western Conference, the Napheesa Collier-led Minnesota Lynx.
