Rahul Gandhi vs DU again, this time over reserved faculty posts
Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Delhi University are in the middle of yet another row. After his recent campus visit ruffled feathers — the varsity said it was his second visit without any prior intimation' — a claim by the Congress leader that the varsity, as well as other universities, is disqualifying candidates from marginalised communities has not gone down well.
On Wednesday, DU stated that the claim was based on 'incorrect data' and amounted to an attempt to 'malign' the institution's reputation.
In a post on X on Tuesday, Gandhi wrote: ''Not Found Suitable' is the new Manuism now. Qualified SC/ST/OBC candidates are being deliberately 'disqualified' – to keep them away from education and leadership. Babasaheb had said: Education is the biggest weapon for equality. But the Modi government is busy blunting that weapon.'
His post went to state: 'In Delhi University, more than 60% of reserved posts of professors and more than 30% of reserved posts of associate professors have been kept vacant by calling them NFS [Not Found Suitable]. This is no exception – IITs, Central Universities, the same conspiracy is going on everywhere. NFS is an attack on the Constitution… a betrayal of social justice. This is not just a fight for education and employment – it is a fight for rights, respect and participation. I spoke to DUSU students – now together we will respond to every anti-reservation move of BJP/RSS with the power of the Constitution.'
DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh told The Indian Express: 'This is completely incorrect data that Rahul Gandhi has quoted. It would've been nice of him if he could've asked us for the data before writing this.'
According to data accessed by The Indian Express, DU's departments advertised 272 vacancies for assistant professors, 246 for associate professors, and 107 for professors in its recent recruitment cycle of 2022–2025.
Of these, the university filled 233, 79, and 23 posts respectively.
A total of 79 posts — 10 assistant professors, 41 associate professors, and 28 professor positions — were declared 'Not Found Suitable' (NFS). These included 17 posts reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC); 13 for Scheduled Tribes (ST); 21 for Other Backward Classes (OBC); 9 for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS); 4 for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) and 15 posts under general category.
In contrast, the representation of these categories in appointments made during earlier cycles was lower. Between 2004 and 2014, only 15.5% of SC; 6.27% of ST; and 11.81% of OBC positions at the assistant professor level were filled.
The percentage dropped at the associate and professor levels. Only 0.69% and 2.08% (SC and ST, respectively) of associate professor posts were filled, and just 2.41% of professor posts were filled by SC candidates. No appointments for the post of professor were recorded under ST, OBC, or EWS categories.
From 2015 to 2025, DU appointed 509 faculty members across its departments — 426 assistant professors, 59 associate professors, and 24 professors. Within these, SC representation was 14.79%, 16.95%, and 12.5% respectively, while ST appointments stood at 7.28% (assistant), 3.39% (associate), and 4.17% (professor).
In its affiliated colleges, DU had 4,491 vacancies for assistant professors between 2022 and 2025, out of which 4,414 were filled. Of these, 77 posts were declared NFS — including 0.09% of SC posts, 0.11% of ST, 0.27% of OBC, and 0.56% of EWS; indicating comparatively lower NFS usage at the college level than within university departments.
DU South Campus Director Shri Prakash Singh also responded to Gandhi's criticism by emphasising the rigour of the university's recruitment process. 'Since Professor Yogesh Singh became Vice-Chancellor, this process has become more regular — we hold selections five days a week. Our major concern is the eligibility and authenticity of published work, and that applies to unreserved posts too.'
'We don't know who shared this data with him,' he added. 'The administration has not been approached. All we can say is that this is incorrect information. Mr Gandhi is doing politics with an academic institution. That is not acceptable from a responsible leader of this country.'
'The university is not changing and will not be changing the nature of the posts decided in the roster,' Singh added.

Suspend ‘in-house' subject admission plans, state tells CU
1 2 3 Kolkata: The state higher education department has instructed Calcutta University to suspend its plans to open admissions for a few 'in-house' undergraduate courses, indicating that the centralised admission portal will start functioning shortly. Calcutta University made a decision following a faculty council meeting held on May 21 to initiate admission procedures for some 'in-house' UG courses like food and nutrition, human development, and music, leaving OBC criteria aside primarily to avoid legal issues. However, after the decision, the advertisement for admission was not published. Sources said officials from the higher education department told the university to slow down and not start the admission process before the centralised admission portal (CAP) goes live. A CU official said, "There should be parity between all undergraduate courses run across affiliated colleges and the university. We cannot start classes until the official date is declared by the state higher education department. We are ready to start the admission process any day as we are completely prepared." Calcutta University's interim vice-chancellor Santa Datta Dey said, "We are more concerned about the undergraduate courses across all our affiliated colleges that have been waiting for the admission process to begin. We took a decision for our in-house UG courses, but the entire system is stalled due to the OBC-related matter. How long will students wait in this uncertainty? The admission process can begin leaving this reservation-related dispute, and alternative arrangements can be made after the matter is resolved. " She also indicated that they were still consulting lawyers to get clear ideas about all legal provisions related to this matter. All 159 affiliated colleges under CU and other colleges and universities that admit students through the centralised admission portal are still waiting for the portal's commencement date. Rabindra Bharati University conducts UG admissions for fine arts and visual arts on its own, while admissions for other subjects is conducted through the admission portal. RBU has not decided any date for the commencement of admissions. However, private and autonomous institutions are midway through the process. Colleges like St Xavier's, Scottish Church and Shri Shikshayatan have already closed their admission portals and started publishing merit lists, too. A CU college principal said, "Private colleges are wrapping up their admissions while we are still uncertain about the commencement date. This is a clear sign of a challenge to fill seats this year, too. At the same time, Bengal will lose bright students as they will not wait for this delay."

BJP leaders replying to Rahul Gandhi's questions on the 2024 Maharashtra polls instead of the Election Commission of India confirms the "match-fixing" charge, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala said on Sunday (June 8, 2025). Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' article, with facts and figures to refute Mr. Gandhi's claims, was published in The Indian Express and the Marathi daily Loksatta during the day. Earlier, top BJP leaders, including party chief J.P. Nadda, had slammed Mr. Gandhi for casting aspersions on the country's electoral process. "BJP leaders are replying on behalf of the Election Commission, which is concerning. It only confirms that match-fixing did take place. Rahul Gandhi, in his detailed article, has exposed how the Maharashtra assembly elections were marred by fraud, manipulation, and a systematic violation of the people's mandate, amounting to a brutal assault on democracy," Mr. Chennithala said in a statement. The ECI must respond to serious questions raised by Mr. Gandhi, who has exposed a "disturbing truth", Mr. Chennithala said while asserting the happenings related to the state polls were not accidental but a meticulously-planned operation. "Maharashtra, once a beacon of democratic values, is now witnessing a deep erosion of those values. The Congress has been consistently following up with the Election Commission, but so far, the responses have been superficial and unsatisfactory," the AICC in charge for the state said. Mr. Chennithala said when the Chandigarh High Court ordered the release of CCTV footage in connection with the Haryana assembly polls, the Union government, with help from the EC, changed the rules and blocked that information. "Why was that done? And for whose benefit?" he asked. The Maharashtra polls involved manipulation in the voter list, large-scale bogus voting and artificial inflation of vote percentages, Chennithala alleged. "In the Lok Sabha election, Congress and its allies won a sweeping mandate. Then how could the outcome reverse so drastically within just five months? This reeks of electoral fraud," he said. The refusal to conduct a mock drill in Markadwadi (where some people sought a repoll after alleging EVM manipulation) itself is a sign that something was being hidden, he added. The BJP and EC are trying to hide the truth but the Congress will pursue it relentlessly till democratic integrity is restored, Chennithala asserted.

Punjab govt working for wellbeing of underprivileged sections, says CM Mann at loan waiver event
Amritsar, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday said his government is working untiringly for the wellbeing of the state's weaker and underprivileged sections. Addressing a gathering after handing over loan waiver certificates to the beneficiaries here, Mann said the previous governments in the state waived loans of the affluent people but didn't bother about the welfare of the poor. 'For the first time in the history of Punjab, this reprieve is being extended to the underprivileged and weaker sections of society,' Mann said. The loan waiver scheme worth ₹67.84 crore has benefited around 4,800 families of loanees of the Punjab Scheduled Castes Land Development and Finance Corporation , the chief minister said. On June 3, the Punjab Cabinet gave its nod to waive loans amounting to ₹67.84 crore taken by over 4,000 Dalit families from the PSCFC. Mann said the waiver covers all loans disbursed by the PSCFC up to March 31, 2020, offering significant relief to SC and Divyangjan loanees. The move will benefit 4,727 loanees for an aggregate amount of ₹67.84 crore. The scheme will cover all the loanees, including 4,685 defaulting loanees and 42 regular loanees, government sources said. Addressing the gathering, Mann said 'no due certificates' will be issued by the state government and the full amount of ₹67.84 crore comprising principal, interest and penal interest calculated as of April 30, 2025, will be reimbursed to the PSCFC by the state government. The loanees who previously availed benefits under the earlier waiver schemes are also eligible for coverage under this initiative, Mann said. No recovery proceedings will be initiated against the loanees and their accounts will be considered fully settled as of the cut-off date, he added. According to the 2011 Census, Scheduled Castes constitute 31.94 per cent of Punjab's total population and many members of this community have availed loans from the PSCFC to set up self-employment ventures aimed at economic upliftment. However, Mann said some borrowers were unable to repay their loans due to circumstances beyond their control, leading to defaults. These families could not repay their loans due to circumstances such as demise of the main earning member, prolonged illness, or having no other source of income, etc. Recovering these loans from such people was unjust, so the state government has decided to waive them, the chief minister said.
