Soccer-Miedema's 100th goal fires Dutch to 3-0 Euros win over Wales
LUCERNE, Switzerland (Reuters) -Vivianne Miedema scored her 100th international goal to send the Netherlands on their way to a 3-0 win over Wales in their Group D opener at the Women's European Championship at the Allmend Stadion in Lucerne on Saturday.
Wales came into their debut match at a major tournament as underdogs against the 2017 champions and, after frustrating the Dutch for long periods of the opening half, Miedema's milestone strike before the break ended the Welsh resistance.
The Welsh were pinned back in their own half for long stretches, often making things difficult for themselves with some wayward passing but also regularly putting their bodies on the line in the box to block the constant Dutch danger.
Jill Roord hit two powerful efforts in the first half, one saved by Wales keeper Olivia Clark, the other thundering back off the upright, while the Welsh intent was underlined by Lily Woodham picking up a booking inside 25 minutes for time-wasting.
Wales looked like hanging on until the interval but, deep into added time, Miedema struck a curling shot from outside the area which sailed into the far top corner, a goal worthy of the captain's milestone in her 126th international appearance.
The Dutch doubled their lead less than three minutes after the break, with Danielle van de Donk laying a pass back to Victoria Pelova in the box who blasted a shot through the legs of defender Gemma Evans and beyond the keeper.
Roord again hit the woodwork, as the Netherlands almost added a third immediately, and they did find the net again in the 57th minute.
Jackie Groenen's shot rattled the crossbar and, from the rebound, Pelova floated a ball to the back post which was finished off by Esmee Brugts. The Dutch threatened to run riot but despite plenty of chances were unable to add to their tally.
In arguably the toughest group in the competition, holders England face France later on Saturday.

Miedema completes century in Netherlands' thumping of Wales at Women's Euro 2025
SWITZERLAND: Vivianne Miedema helped the Netherlands to a 3-0 win over Wales on Saturday with her 100th international goal which gave the Dutch a positive start to their Women's Euro 2025 campaign. Manchester City striker Miedema opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time in Lucerne with a beautiful curling strike, completing her century of goals for her country. Victoria Pelova and Esmee Brugts netted the other goals after the break to give Wales a rude awakening in their major tournament debut. Andries Jonker's team are provisionally top of Group D ahead of holders England's clash with France in Zurich, while Wales already have their work cut out to qualify from possibly the toughest group in the tournament. Rhian Wilkinson's side could easily have been behind before Miedema, who was a doubt for the tournament after suffering a hamstring injury in April, struck, Jill Roord crashing a rocket of a shot off the post in the 35th minute. Pelova doubled the Oranje's lead two minutes after the break when she rifled home from Danielle van de Donk's pass, and the Arsenal midfielder set up Brugts to make absolutely sure of the points in the 57th minute with a perfect deep cross. Sarina Wiegman, who led the Dutch to European glory in 2017, has picked Lauren James to start against France despite the Chelsea star only making a substitute appearance against Jamaica last weekend since suffering a hamstring injury in April. "We have to improve in each department of the team, in defence, in midfield and offensively." The coach said France found the going tough at the start and end of the match when England were on top. But his team made the most of their chances, scoring twice during their dominant spell while England managed only a late consolation goal. "Each game is decided on the details and it's not easy to win this type of game," Bonadei said. "But I want to say that I am proud of my players, because they never give up in this game and keep control and keep calm in the difficult moments."
