IL Senator increasing SNAP benefits for college students

Yahoo20-03-2025
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — One State Senator is pushing an initiative to reduce hunger for college students in Illinois.
Senator Graciela Guzmán is expanding the eligibility for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in Illinois. According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, almost two thirds of students that are eligible for SNAP are not receiving benefits.

Many students are steered away from applying because they assume, or are advised incorrectly, that they are not eligible. On the other hand, others that do apply are rejected in error because the rules for students are complex.
'It is hard to succeed in school when you're hungry,' Guzman said. 'Helping students, especially low-income scholars, who are disproportionately affected by food insecurity, succeed academically and economically is not only smart, but also the right thing to do for the next generation.'
Students are not eligible for SNAP unless they meet certain conditions without this initiative, including working at least 20 hours a week at a paid job in addition to going to school. Senate Bill 1298 would expand and streamline eligibility for SNAP benefits, allowing all students at public universities in Illinois to benefit from the program if they meet income and other eligibility requirements.
'With nearly one in four undergraduate students (approximately 3.8 million) experiencing food insecurity in the United States, student hunger is a growing crisis,' Kate Maehr, executive director and CEO of the Greater Chicago Food Depository, said. 'It is essential that we modernize and expand the eligibility criteria for SNAP, as the nation's largest nutrition assistance program, to meet the needs of today's college students as they pursue their academic and career dreams.'
Senate Bill 1298 passed the Senate Health & Services Committee on Tuesday.

MAGA Rep Gets Torn to Shreds in Disastrous Post-Budget Town Hall

Now that Congress is in summer recess, homebound Republican lawmakers are learning just how much their constituents hate the president's policies. In his first town hall since voting in favor of Donald Trump's 'big, beautiful bill,' Nebraska Representative Mike Flood had no remedy for the fire and fury of his base, who practically roasted him alive Monday night for Flood's ongoing support for Trump. Flood faced a barrage of excoriating questions during the jam-packed town hall, in which voters demanded to understand why their local lawmaker would vote in favor of the president's tax bill and his immigration policies, accusing him of supporting a 'fascist machine.' At one point, the crowd broke into a furious chant: 'Tax the rich.' 'My question is fiscal. With 450 million FEMA dollars being reallocated to open Alligator Alcatraz, and 600 million taxpayer FEMA dollars being used to now open more concentration camps, and ICE burning through 8.4 million dollars a day to illegally detain people—how much does it cost for fascism?' one woman pressed Flood as the crowd behind her cheered. 'How much do the taxpayers have to pay for a fascist country?' But Flood's response was no different from the party line, effectively echoing Trump's 'mandate from the people' ideology to advance undemocratic ideals. 'Americans went to the polls in November, and they had a choice between a Democratic candidate that had an open border, no enforcement, fentanyl, drugs, human trafficking, and they had a choice between that and a candidate that said close the border, get illegal immigrants out of our country, stop the fentanyl, stop the human trafficking, stop the drugs, stop the crime, stop the violence,' Flood said. 'That's what Americans voted for. 'Americans voted for a border that is secure, and I support the president enforcing our immigration laws, which, by the way, were written by Congress,' he added. Flood's constituents also harangued him for failing to protect SNAP benefits, veterans' programs, and health care access, and for supporting Trump as the president circumnavigates and avoids his own home-brewed Epstein scandal. 'Let's be very clear—at the next pro forma session of the Congress, you will find my name as a sponsor on a resolution from the House Rules Committee to release the Epstein files to protect the victims and not re-victimize them again,' Flood said, stating that he was for the release of the records despite the fact that he—along with every other Republican in the House—voted against a Democrat-led effort last month to make the files public. The crowd, which at 750 people was the largest at one of Flood's town halls yet, repeatedly booed the lawmaker almost from the very start. At one point, unsatisfied with his answers, constituents broke out into chants of, 'Vote him out!' Flood is unlikely to be the only conservative facing enormous backlash at home. Republicans have been instructed by the National Republican Congressional Committee to focus their time at home in August on selling Trump's agenda to voters.

'You Sold Us Out!': Elise Stefanik Drowned Out by Booing Crowd

Representative Elise Stefanik was not well received when she returned to her district in upstate New York. The congresswoman received a particularly hostile reception from her constituents during a ceremony in Plattsburg Monday evening. More than half of the attendees at the event, intended to mark the renaming of the Clinton County Government Center, were actually protesters, according to the local NBC affiliate NBC 5. The crowd jeered at Stefanik both times she approached the podium, calling the staunch MAGA supporter a 'traitor,' while others chanted, 'Shame.' 'You sold us out,' cried one protester. 'You're a Nazi,' shouted another. Yet another protester yelled on repeat that Stefanik needed to 'unseal the Epstein files.' Stefanik chided the protesters, claiming that the renaming ceremony for her 'dear friend' was the wrong time and place to attack her—but her constituents disagreed. Instead, they argued that Stefanik had been so absent in their district that they were left with no other choice. 'Well, Elise has not shown up in our district for months and months,' protester Mavis Agnew told NBC 5. 'She won't hold a town hall, she won't take questions. She's never in her office. People show up at her office constantly; door's closed. Her representatives, her employees won't talk to her.… So this was her first appearance, the first opportunity we had to let her know we're unhappy.' But Stefanik wasn't willing to recognize that her support for Donald Trump's agenda was the basis for her hometown hatred. 'It is a disgusting disgrace that this is what the far left does, rather than understanding that his family has been through a tremendous amount. It was about honoring his legacy,' Stefanik told NBC5 after the event, referring to John Zurlo, for whom the center was renamed. Stefanik isn't the only Trumpian legislator who has gotten scorched during the summer recess for voting against the needs of their constituents. Earlier this month, Nebraska Representative Mike Flood was excoriated during a town hall for failing to protect SNAP benefits, veterans' programs, and health care access, which combined with voters' simmering resentment for Flood's lagging on the release of the Epstein files. MAGA Rep's Town Hall Derails Over Her Support for Trump Tariffs

Summer recess is turning out to be a crude wake-up call for Republican lawmakers, who appear to be learning just how much their constituents hate the Trumpian policies they've voted for. Wyoming Representative Harriet Hageman had her own rude awakening at a Natrona County town hall on Monday when she was pressed to explain her ongoing support for Donald Trump's 'liberation day' tariff plan. 'Who is responsible for establishing tariffs in our country?' asked a male attendee. 'Well right now, the president has taken that authority,' Hageman said, cut off by a loud 'boo' from the audience. 'Why did he take that authority? You guys gave it to him. The House of Representatives are responsible for establishing tariffs. You gave that to him,' the attendee continued, urged on by cheers and applause from the crowd. 'The next thing I'd like to ask you, when you look at the bigger picture—' he continued, before Hageman cut him off to claim that the tariffs had 'raised over $150 billion.' But that only further incensed the crowd, who began to shout at their elected lawmaker. 'Who pays for them? Who pays for them? We pay for them,' the attendee on the microphone retorted. 'Inflation has not gone up,' Hageman said. It was the third event in a matter of weeks that Hageman had bombed onstage in front of her constituents. In a heated exchange with a female attendee at a Casper town hall earlier Monday, the 62-year-old's stated belief that mail-in ballots are not 'foundational tools' of democratic elections was practically met with screams from the irate crowd. The Wyoming Republican was also practically roasted in the rural town of Pinedale on July 29 when she justified the planned repeal of the Environmental Protection Agency's landmark 'endangerment finding,' which required corporations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. 'The endangerment finding is absolutely based upon false science,' Hageman told the crowd, who jeered back at her. 'Lie, lie!' they chanted over her. 'CO2 is not a pollutant,' Hageman shouted. 'As far as the validity and the science that was the foundation for that, they cooked the books.' Hageman isn't the only MAGA legislator who has gotten scorched during the last few weeks for voting against the interests of her constituents. New York Representative Elise Stefanik was roundly booed by a feisty crowd when she emerged in Plattsburg Monday to rename a county building, and Nebraska Representative Mike Flood was excoriated during a town hall earlier this month for failing to protect SNAP benefits, veterans' programs, and health care access, combined with voters' simmering resentment for the GOP's lagging on the release of the Epstein files.
