‘He's so slick' – Willie Mullins' potential next superstar slashed to joint-fav for Cheltenham after ‘impressive' debut
The brilliantly-bred Davy Crockett was an easy winner on his hurdles debut at Galway on Monday.
1
Sent off just 1-2 under jockey Mark Walsh, Davy Crockett, who is by Guineas and Derby winner Camelot and out of Mullins' awesome Annie Power, won by two-and-a-half lengths.
He extended well when out in the clear but still left plenty of room for improvement in the jumping department.
Mullins liked what he saw though - and so did bookies, as they cut him to 14-1 joint-fav from as big as 33s for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle.
Davy Crockett, who is owned by JP McManus and Susan Magnier and a half-brother to dual Grade 1 winner Mystical Power, heads the market for the Festival opener next March with Mullins' Champion Bumper winner Bambino Fever.
While he could revert to the Flat, Mullins confirmed his more immediate future lies over hurdles.
And he set out an early target his team will work back from - possibly with a view to rocking up at Cheltenham next March.
The Closutton boss told Racing TV: "For a horse only having his second run on a track, he was very good.
"He was so slick with his jumping apart from at the second last.
"Those novices are so fast, he was going faster than the others and he just missed it.
"But he was perfect at the last and he looks a real nice prospect with his pedigree.
"I want to plan a path to the (Grade 2) Royal Bond in November.
"He's not the biggest horse - not a chasing type - but he looks a real hurdler.
"He's more a Flat/hurdle type horse and maybe we could go back on the Flat with him.
"But the way he jumped there I'd say he'll make a fine hurdler.
"A lot of horses in his position would have thrown in the towel after the sticky jump but he didn't."
Gold Cup-winning jockey Walsh was just as complimentary.
He said: "He was a bit novicey. We were trapping down to the second last and Davy Crockett got a bit unsighted and just galloped into it.
"I loved the way he picked up after that and winged the last. Plenty of improvement likely.
"He had been keen in his bumper but settled grand until he got a bit lit up in second half of the race.
"He'll learn in time, he's not a big horse but there's an engine in there."

Crystal Palace have court date set to hear on European future
Crystal Palace is challenging UEFA's decision to demote them from the Europa League to the third-tier Conference League. The demotion is due to UEFA's multi-club ownership rules, specifically concerning John Textor's controlling stake in Palace and his previous ownership of Olympique Lyonnais. A closed-door hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is scheduled for 8 August, with a ruling anticipated by 11 August. If Crystal Palace's appeal is unsuccessful, Nottingham Forest, who finished seventh in the Premier League, will take their place in the Europa League. Crystal Palace supporters have protested UEFA's decision, including a demonstration at the organisation's headquarters in Switzerland.

Man United make contact with RB Leipzig over new top striker target Benjamin Sesko as asking price is revealed - and they may offer players in exchange
Manchester United have contacted RB Leipzig over Benjamin Sesko after making the Slovenia star their No 1 striker target. United have decided to pursue a deal for Sesko instead of Aston Villa 's Ollie Watkins, but will face competition from Newcastle. It's understood that United have approached Leipzig via intermediaries to explore the possibility of signing Sesko who could be available to them for between £60-70million plus add-ons. United would also consider a swap-plus-cash deal involving one of their players. Rasmus Hojlund could be used as a makeweight after struggling to justify his £72m transfer fee, and United are looking to offload their four 'bomb squad' players – Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho who has played in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund. Having weighed up a move for Sesko or Watkins, United decided to channel their efforts into signing the 6ft 5in centre-forward who has scored 39 goals in 87 games for Leipzig, and 16 goals in 41 appearances for Slovenia. It's understood that United approached Villa over a deal in the region of £45m for Watkins, but their Premier League rivals did not want to sell and it would have taken a significantly higher offer to alter that stance. Sesko is significantly younger at 22 and lacks the Premier League experience Ruben Amorim would prefer after United paid more than £130m on Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, of Wolves, this summer. But United's director of recruitment Christopher Vivell is said to be a strong advocate for signing Sesko having previously worked at Leipzig and the player's former club Red Bull Salzburg. Newcastle will still hope they can persuade Sesko to move to Tyneside if Alexander Isak leaves for Liverpool after speaking to Leipzig and the player's camp. United had originally hoped to sign Liam Delap this summer, but the Ipswich striker moved to Chelsea instead. A number of other strikers have been considered, but Isak and Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson were deemed too expensive, and United sources have dismissed speculation over a swap deal involving Garnacho and Jackson. Meanwhile, United are continuing to assess their goalkeeping options with Andre Onana currently ruled out with a hamstring injury. Villa rejected an offer to take Emi Martinez on loan and United have also been linked with Paris Saint-Germain keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and John Victor of Botafogo.

Why Bokila chose Livingston move over Eredivise stay
The "passion and desire" of Scottish football helped Livingston sign DR Congo Jeremy Bokila despite more lucrative offers in the Dutch Eredivisie, says manager David 36, is set for a debut in Saturday's Premiership opener at Kilmarnock after moving from top-flight club Willem previously turned out in Belgium, Romania, Turkey, Russia, China and the United States, Bokila was keen to try his hand in said: "Jeremy had offers to stay in the top tier of Holland, but he wanted a new challenge."He's 36 years old, he's played the top tier over there, he's played top tier a few countries."He was aware of Scottish football and the passion surrounding Scottish football."So it definitely wasn't a financial decision for Jeremy because he would have had better offers, but it was just that new experience for him coming to the latter stages of his career."He wants to go and try something different and the passion and desire of Scottish football attracted him to Scotland."I just think the passion within Scottish football is phenomenal. We've got lower crowds but the atmosphere is still really, really vibrant."I've been to bigger stadiums over the years in different countries. There's maybe 20-25,000 but it's nowhere near the atmosphere that 5,000 Scottish football fans can make."I think per capita we're one of the best supported leagues in Europe, maybe the world. But that just shows you the passion is there."
