In 2014, Ranbir Kapoor, who is an ardent football enthusiast made his dream come true when he bought Mumbai City Football Club. Over the years, his club became the first to win both the League Winners Shield and the ISL cup title in a single season. Eventually, Ranbir's club went on to win the ISL league winners shield twice. Now, after all these years, the actor's chartered accountant as well as club's co-owner Bimal Parekh recalled how exactly they happened to buy the club.
It all started when Bimal Parekh read about an auction of a football team. Knowing Ranbir's love for the game, Bimal saw an opportunity and advised Ranbir to buy the club.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Bimal Parekh said, 'I knew Ranbir was a huge football fan — he'd go to Barcelona for a day just to watch a match. So, when I read about the auction of a football team, I sensed an opportunity. Juhi has been a client for more than 30 years, so I knew cricket was making huge money.'

While Ranbir was excited about owning a football club, it was Rishi Kapoor who had the final say.
'Ranbir was excited about the idea, so we went to Rishiji, as he was the decision-maker. He was fine with it but wanted to know who'd run the team. I suggested we hire professional, but Rishiji was of the opinion that someone from the family should be there to look after.'
He added, 'It was then that I said I could do it, and he was happy. But he had one question: What will be your fee? I said I'd rather a stake instead! However, it took some time for the game to take off.'
When the actor bought the club, he told PTI, 'It is a moment of great pride for me to be a part of the Indian Super League and to represent the vibrant city of Mumbai. Football has never been far away from my daily life since childhood, and now as a partner in the Indian Super League, I am looking forward to translate my passion into contributing to the growth of the sport.'
In November 2019, City Football Group (CFG) acquired a 65% stake in Mumbai City FC. CFG also owns Manchester City, and New York City FC among the many other clubs around the world. Ranbir Kapoor retained 18% stake while Bimal was left with other 17%.

Ranbir Kapoor's Clean-Shaven Look, Drastic Weight Loss After Animal Leaves Fans Stunned

Last Updated: Fresh off the shoot for Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana, Ranbir has shifted gears to begin prep for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's upcoming romantic saga Love and War. Ranbir Kapoor is making headlines again and it's not for his film performances, but jaw-dropping transformation. The actor, who had bulked up and sported a rugged beard for his intense role in Animal, was recently spotted looking drastically leaner and completely clean-shaven. The video of his new look has now taken the internet by storm. Fresh off the shoot for Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana, Ranbir has shifted gears to begin prep for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's upcoming romantic saga Love and War. In a viral clip circulating online, the actor is seen in the city sporting a fresh, clean-shaven face and a slick hairstyle, noticeably slimmer than his Animal avatar. Dressed casually in a red tee and denim from his personal label, Ranbir waved at the paparazzi, posed for pictures, and even handed his cap to one of the photographers before stepping into his car. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Viral Bhayani (@viralbhayani) Fans who were used to seeing his wild, bearded look in Animal were stunned by the dramatic change. In Animal, Ranbir played the ferocious Ranvijay Singh, whose violent journey begins when his father Balbir Singh (Anil Kapoor) is threatened. The film followed his descent into violence and eventual confrontation with his cousin Abrar Haque (Bobby Deol). It ended with a cliffhanger, setting up Animal Park, the upcoming sequel. Interestingly, Ranbir's grungy look in Animal almost didn't happen. Celebrity hairstylist Aalim Hakim recently revealed that director Sandeep Reddy Vanga was initially against the idea of long hair and beard, fearing it looked too much like Ranbir's appearance in Sanju. 'Had Ranbir's hair and beard not been long in Animal, I don't think his character would have the same impact," Aalim told Galatta India. 'Vanga sir initially said the long hair isn't working… I had to convince him that once the full look was in place, it wouldn't resemble Sanju." Despite criticism for its perceived misogynistic tone, Animal was a blockbuster, earning over Rs 915 crore globally. With Love and War now on the horizon, Ranbir's latest transformation has sparked fresh curiosity about what's in store next. First Published: June 05, 2025, 23:29 IST

Muzammil Ibrahim Recalls Losing Best Debut Award To Ranbir Kapoor: 'I Deserved It More'

Last Updated: Muzammil Ibrahim reveals he was snubbed at 2007 awards despite praise for Dhokha. Says he deserved Best Debut over Ranbir Kapoor and wasn't even invited. Model-turned-actor Muzammil Ibrahim, who made his acting debut with Dhokha in 2007, has opened up about the heartbreak he experienced during awards season that year. Despite being lauded for his performance in the Mahesh and Pooja Bhatt film, Muzammil says he was completely sidelined—while Ranbir Kapoor, who also debuted that year with Saawariya, swept all the Best Debut trophies. In a candid chat with Siddharth Kannan, Muzammil didn't hold back. 'I think Ranbir had debuted that year with Saawariya, and Neil Nitin Mukesh had come with Johnny Gaddar," he began. 'Nana Patekar said that I deserved all the awards, but would not get them because Ranbir would win. Even I thought I deserved an award for Dhokha, I 100% deserved the Best Debut award. I feel I was better than Ranbir in Saawariya. I love Ranbir as an actor now, but if you compare him in Saawariya and me in Dhokha, I was better. Irrfan Khan had told Mahesh Bhatt that very few could have pulled off that part in Dhokha." But the most painful part, Muzammil says, wasn't even losing—it was not being acknowledged at all. 'I was not even invited to the award shows where I was nominated alongside Neil and Ranbir. I felt that award shows were supposed to be like a ballot, like we see in the Oscars. But here, everyone knows who is winning! Only Ranbir is sitting there, so he will win. It is pre-decided." He recalled a particularly crushing moment when superstar Shah Rukh Khan took the stage to announce the winner. 'I felt so bad when Shah Rukh Khan sir called my name and even said that he thought that I deserved the award more on stage. As outsiders, we cannot even complain about these things. We are not even invited—how will you feel? I felt like crying, I felt so bad. I had so many expectations." Reflecting on the struggles he faced while filming Dhokha, Muzammil added, 'I had suffered a lot while shooting the film and still gave a brilliant performance. I am a big champion of outside talent—the struggle we go through is immense. The industry should learn not to put down outsiders." Directed by Pooja Bhatt and produced under the Vishesh Films banner, Dhokha featured Muzammil as a conflicted police officer—a role that won him critical praise. While his career didn't skyrocket like some of his peers, he was recently seen in the hit web series Special Ops, reminding audiences of the potential he displayed all those years ago.
