B.C. wildfire was sparked by RCMP vehicle ‘failure'
Mounties in British Columbia say a wildfire that has prompted evacuation orders and alerts near the village of Lytton was sparked by an RCMP vehicle.
The Izman Creek fire was discovered Tuesday after 'an equipment failure of an RCMP trailer resulted in the accidental ignition,' Staff Sgt. Kris Clark said in an emailed statement Thursday.
'It appears that the right side wheel ejected from the trailer ultimately causing a fire in the grass-filled ditch,' Clark added.
'The officer stopped to engage the flames with their issued fire extinguisher but the conditions were not favourable and they were unable contain the fire.'

Mounties said a joint operation — involving RCMP and other police in B.C., elsewhere in Canada and internationally — began investigating in late 2023 when victims reported receiving threats demanding large sums of money, followed by acts of violence or property damage when those demands weren't met. No one was injured. In a news release on Thursday, RCMP said the suspects will be charged with careless discharge of a firearm and arson related to incidents in Surrey in late 2023 and 2024. Police didn't release the names of the suspects but confirmed they are Surrey residents. Chief Supt. Duncan Pound said no charges have been laid and he wouldn't give details on the allegations other than to say no extortion victims were hurt. Prosecution Service to secure charge approval. Satish Kumar, president of the Lakshmi Narayan Mandir Temple and owner of Reflections Banquet Hall, said it was good to hear about the arrests, but noted extortions 'have not stopped.' Extortion victims have received threats demanding large sums of money, sometimes followed by acts of violence or property damage when demands were not met, police say. He wants police to release more information about the two people arrested, as well as which extortion attempt the charges are linked to. Kumar's life was threatened after he said he wouldn't pay $2 million to an extortionist. He has since been targeted by two shootings. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Last month, he organized a public forum to talk about extortionists targeting South Asian business owners in Surrey. He said that he knows refusing to pay, speaking out and organizing a safety forum only puts him in harm's way. 'When you stand up against violence, you may suffer from it,' he told Postmedia News. The joint operation has investigators from the RCMP Surrey provincial operations support unit, Abbotsford police, RCMP federal policing for the Pacific region, and the B.C. RCMP major crime section, plus a civilian criminal analyst with the Surrey Police Service. Pound, the Lower Mainland RCMP assistant district commander, said 'the team has worked diligently to advance linked extortion investigations.' Other extortion investigations that aren't covered by the joint operation's mandate 'have continued to be advanced and investigated by the police of jurisdiction,' he said in a statement. 'This unified approach is critical to effectively identifying those responsible, protecting victims, and addressing the broader public safety risk,' Pound said. 'We want the public to know that police agencies across the Lower Mainland are prioritizing these investigations and are committed to working together and with communities to hold those responsible, accountable.' Anyone who is a victim of an extortion attempt is urged to not comply with demands, to save all correspondence and to make a report to police. A national team was created in fall 2023 to improve co-ordination among police across Canada including in Surrey, Edmonton and Brampton — all of which are dealing with a rise in extortion targeting South Asian businesses. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Before Thursday, police in Brampton and Edmonton had made arrests while attacks in Surrey appeared to be ramping up again. There were two shootings linked to extortion in June, including one at Nijjar Trucking and another at the Maple Ridge home of a Punjabi music producer. Last month, B.C. Premier David Eby asked the federal government to classify the India-based Bishnoi gang as a terrorist group. Public Safety Minister Garry Begg said he has been told by police that the gang is linked the extortion efforts, though critics say there is no direct evidence the globally active gang is behind the B.C. extortions. In June, the B.C. and federal governments joined Crime Stoppers in launching a $100,000 awareness campaign to bring public attention to the extortions.
