30 years ago today: Rockets complete historic journey to second NBA championship

30 years ago today: Rockets complete historic journey to second NBA championship It was June 14, 1995, when Hakeem Olajuwon's Rockets completed perhaps the most iconic run to a championship in NBA history. Now 30 years later, we're taking a look back. On this day 30 years ago, the 1994-95 Rockets finished off what could be the toughest path to a championship in NBA history. NBA Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) Hakeem Olajuwon led Houston in Game 4 versus Orlando with 35 points and 15 rebounds, sending 'Clutch City' to a 113-101 home victory (box score) on June 14, 1995, and securing a series sweep. Mario Elie chipped in with 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting (81.8%) from the field, including 4-of-6 on 3-pointers (66.7%). All-Stars Shaquille O'Neal and Anfernee "Penny' Hardaway each scored 25 for the Magic. HoopsHype has more perspective on the historic journey by the sixth-seeded Rockets to a second consecutive NBA crown. According to research in which we looked at every team's path to their eventual championship wins, the 1994-95 Rockets had the toughest road ever to winning a title. The worst team they beat had a 57-25 record, and that was their Finals opponent, the Orlando Magic, who boasted a lineup featuring Shaquille O'Neal and Penny Hardaway, amongst many valuable role players. In all, the 1995 run can be summed up perfectly by the postgame quote that night from legendary head coach Rudy Tomjanovich. 'Don't ever underestimate the heart of a champion!' To this day, it remains the most recent NBA title for the Rockets. However, led by head coach Ime Udoka, the current Rockets would like to change that in the near future. Jonnu Smith, Jalen Ramsey Absent From Dolphins Minicamp Amid Trade Buzz

Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith (9) runs a route against the Houston Texans in the second half of an NFL football game, Sunday, Dec 15, 2024 in Houston. (AP Photo/Maria Lysaker) The Pittsburgh Steelers are keeping their eyes on the Miami Dolphins, who have two star players absent from mandatory minicamp. The Miami Dolphins were without two key veterans on the first day of mandatory minicamp, as tight end Jonnu Smith and cornerback Jalen Ramsey were both no-shows. That has only further fueled the trade speculation involving the Pittsburgh Steelers. Advertisement Smith's absence is reportedly contract-related. After a career-best season in 2024, where he recorded 88 receptions for 884 yards and set the Dolphins' single-season record for catches by a tight end, the 29-year-old is seeking a new deal. Last offseason, he signed a two-year, $4 million contract that now looks like a major bargain given his production and impact in Mike McDaniel's offense. As the situation drags on without a resolution, Smith remains a name to watch, especially for the Steelers, who have been consistently linked to him in recent months. On the surface, tight end isn't a glaring need in Pittsburgh. The Steelers already feature a solid duo in Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington. However, offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has long favored heavy tight end personnel, and Smith is already familiar with his system, having played under him in both Tennessee and Atlanta. The 30-year-old cornerback is entering his 10th NFL season and remains one of the league's premier defensive backs. A seven-time Pro Bowler and three-time First-Team All-Pro, Ramsey is still under contract through 2028 on a deal worth $72 million. Advertisement A potential Steelers secondary featuring Ramsey, Joey Porter Jr., and Darius Slay would be among the most talented in the league, offering head coach Mike Tomlin a rare combination of experience and youth on the back end. However, such a move would likely require cap gymnastics and could complicate contract discussions with other stars, namely All-Pro pass rusher T.J. Watt, who is still awaiting a contract extension. While the Steelers have more pressing roster needs and contractual priorities, the idea of landing both Smith and Ramsey isn't out of the realm of possibility. If Pittsburgh believes it is in a win-now window, these two veterans could be difference-makers in a wide-open AFC North. Wisconsin football has a new highest-ranked commit in the class of 2026

Wisconsin football has a new highest-ranked commit in the class of 2026 Wisconsin football landed a commitment from class of 2026 three-star defensive back Zachary Taylor on Friday. Taylor chose the Badgers over top contenders Houston, Texas Tech and TCU. He completed visits to the latter two on June 3 and May 2, respectively, plus was scheduled to visit Houston on June 19. Just one full week after his June 6 official visit to Madison, Wisconsin, Taylor pledged to the Badgers. 247Sports ranks the Fulshear, Texas, native as the No. 540 overall player in the class of 2026, the No. 43 cornerback and the No. 76 recruit from his home state. He became Wisconsin's 12th commitment in the 2026 cycle. Notably, he is now the highest-ranked recruit of that group, edging three-star defensive lineman Djidjou Bah. His commitment pushed the class up to No. 35 nationally and No. 12 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell and his staff are working to deliver a third consecutive top-25 recruiting class. While the program's 2026 class is a significant distance from that threshold, partially because it is still looking for its first blue-chip commit, several of its top targets remain uncommitted. Taylor's commitment may begin a run of positive recruiting news in that regard.
