HGTV Star Jenny Marrs Reveals the Surprising Reason Her 15-Year-Old Sons Were Once ‘Kicked Out' of School
HGTV star Jenny Marrs has confessed that her now-teenage sons were once 'kicked out' of school after the 'Fixer to Fabulous' host made the decision to take them with her on a monthlong trip to Africa.
Jenny, 46, made the candid admission in an Instagram post, revealing that her 15-year-old twins, Nathan and Ben, suffered a fierce blow to their early education when they were ejected from their former school shortly before entering the 2nd grade.
Although Jenny and her family are based in Arkansas, she and her husband, Dave, maintain close ties to Africa, having done a great deal of nonprofit work in the country, while also adopting their daughter, Sylvie, now 13, from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The on-air starlet did not share the circumstances of the trip that took Nathan and Ben away from school for a month; however, the family's blog reveals that they all paid a visit to Zimbabwe for several weeks in early 2017, when they spent time volunteering at a local children's home.
In her post—which has since been edited to remove the detail about her children's removal from their school—Jenny insisted that she has no regrets about the decision, writing that it gave the family the perfect opportunity to find a school where Nathan and Ben would be able to flourish in all the ways that really mattered
'I know I'm not the only mom who has prayed for their beloved babies to be surrounded by good friends as they grow,' she wrote alongside a video of her sons leaping from a rock face into water alongside several pals.
'I remember making the decision when the boys were entering 2nd grade to, after much prayer, move them (and their sister who was about to start kindergarten) to a new school.'
In the original version of the post, which has since been edited, per TV Insider, the mother of five added: 'Granted, we had been kicked out of our old school because we spent a month in Africa during the middle of the year, but I regret nothing. They were little and it was the best thing for our family at the time.'
That incident gave Jenny and her husband the time to figure out exactly what their priorities were when it came to picking a school for their kids, with the HGTV star explaining that they ultimately decided on a school where their children wouldn't be 'shuffled' around and could focus on building a community.
'We chose a school where they wouldn't be shuffled around year to year because of rezoning. We knew we wanted a steady group of kids who would be with them each year and we prioritized friendships over the 'best sports' or 'academics' or whatever other thing seems important these days,' she explained.
The HGTV icon revealed that she was grateful she was able to 'watch' her sons 'play sports alongside and walk through life with their best buds.'
'Now that they're teens, I can honestly say there is no greater gift we can give our younger kids than the gift of friendships,' she continued.
She then offered advice to other moms, suggesting, 'Young mommas: Pray for friends, foster those relationships with play dates and time together and sports and adventures. It isn't easy and it requires sacrifice but I can tell you that it's going to be worth it.'
'This year, my boys have both walked through deep heartache and these friends have walked with them and prayed for them and have showed up for them in ways that I never could have expected of 15 and 16 year old kids.
'Teens often have a bad reputation but I believe they were born for such a time as this. This next generation is brave and God is on the move in and through them,' she said at the end of the caption.
Jenny and Dave tied the knot in 2005 and now share five kids: Nathan, Ben, Sylvie, Charlotte, 12, and Luke, 6. The family—who hails from Florida—moved to Bentonville, AR, and 'fell in love' with everything the town had to offer.
'We were just going to be here for a couple of years and go back to Florida. I think, like a lot of people do here, we came for a stint and realized how great a place it is. This is home,' Marrs told fans in 2018.
She previously revealed in an Instagram post that their home underwent numerous renovations.
'During the remodel, we relocated the sink onto this wall and I can't tell you how much joy it brings me to look out at the animals in the pasture or watch the sun set over the horizon as I do the dishes,' she wrote. 'For a mundane task that truly never ends (with seven people, there are ALWAYS dishes to be washed), this view makes it fairly enjoyable.'
'Much like my new laundry room, this space is a necessary and functional part of our home that now makes me very happy. I'm truly thankful for all of these dishes and clothes to be washed as they are evidence that we have a home brimming with life and the people I treasure most in the world,' she revealed.

Ryan Lochte and Kayla Lochte announce divorce after 7 years of marriage
Olympian Ryan Lochte and his wife, realtor Kayla Lochte, are parting ways after seven years of marriage. Kayla Lochte shared the personal update in an Instagram post Wednesday. "Earlier this year, I made the hard decision to end my marriage after deep prayer and reflection," she wrote in a statement. "I hold marriage in the highest regard, so this has been one of the most painful, revealing, and challenging seasons of my life. I've been hesitant to share until I could do so from a place of healing -- not from fresh, open wounds." The former couple were engaged in 2016 and tied the knot in January 2018. They share three children, Caiden, 7, Liv, 4, and Georgia, 1. "Sometimes we face trials we didn't choose or see coming. And in those moments, we're forced to make the hardest decisions to protect our peace, our children, and our future," Kayla Lochte continued in her lengthy statement. "I've come to understand that staying isn't always the most loving decision someone can make. For me, leaving was an act of love -- for those around me and for myself." Ryan Lochte, a 12-time Olympic medalist swimmer, also shared a message on his Instagram page, confirming the couple's separation. "I want to take a moment to acknowledge what Kayla shared. This past year has brought major changes for both of us as we've come to the difficult decision to end our marriage," the 40-year-old wrote. "I'm deeply grateful for the life we've built together and especially for the love we share for our three children." He added that he felt their mutual decision was "the right step toward peace and well-being" for both of them. "I remain committed to healing, growth, and co-parenting with care and respect as we move forward separately," Ryan Lochte added. "Thank you to our family and friends for your continued support -- it truly means a lot as we begin this new chapter."

In case you haven't heard, all the cool girls are going gaga for gingham this summer. If you're not going in on checked bedding or curtains, you're incorporating the picnic-inspired print into your look. Or, if you're like Jennifer Lopez, you're proudly wearing gingham from top to bottom—and straight-up slaying while doing so. On Mother's Day, the "On The Floor" singer took to Instagram to wish "everyone love, laughter, peace, joy and happiness," while stunning in a gorgeous gingham dress from Reformation (one of PureWow readers' and editors' favorite fashion brands). Unfortunately, the waist-snatching Tagliatelle linen dress (with a cutesy lace trim and corset-style bodice) is sold out in the pattern, but that doesn't mean you can't get her look. There are *a ton* of similar styles up for grabs at Quince, Amazon and even Nordstrom if you want to nail this summer's cutest trend—and look just as good as in the process. Here are five gingham-print dresses that won't break the bank or disappoint this summer. Want to know which buzzy products are *really* worth buying? Sign up for our shopping newsletter to uncover our favorite finds. Quince proved that you can never go wrong with a fit-and-flare dress, and this timeless-yet-trendy style hits it out of the park with its A-line silhouette. The square neckline is universally flattering, while the smocked back panel and adjustable straps guarantee a comfortable (and customizable) fit for any bust size. Add to that the fact that it's made from a lightweight and hypoallergenic linen material and features two deep front pockets, and how can you resist? Did I mention it's less than $100? $80 at tuckernuck Amazon Amazon is hiding one of the *cutest* checked dresses I've seen yet. The best part (besides the adjustable wide straps and smocked back, that is)? Well, believe it or not, the figure-flattering style is available for under $60! But that's not the only reason this buyer is obsessed: "I love all the choices they made with this dress—the slightly structured fabric that just seems to lay right and doesn't bunch up, the squared neckline, the slightly wider adjustable spaghetti straps and the girly lace trim at the bust." What they didn't mention is that it comes in multiple colorways, so you can go for a subtle hue like or embrace your inner Dorothy in a vivid blue. There's no place like Amazon... $57 at amazon Nordstrom Want to go full-on picnic core this summer? Say no more. This red gingham dress is guaranteed to turn heads, whether you're setting out your picnic blanket in the park or sipping mimosas on the patio at brunch. And thanks to its breathable blend of linen and rayon, it's totally worthy of all those warm-weather outings and then some. The lace details on the neckline and waist make it even more of a dream come true, though what I really can't get over is how good the cut is. $99 at nordstrom Saks Fifth Avenue Well, whaddya know? The same brand behind Lopez's frock is also behind this linen beauty. Just like it's designed to check-print perfection with ladder-embroidered trimming that makes it even more flattering and feminine. But is it as comfortable as it is elegant? Given that it features fixed straps, a smocked back panel *and* a concealed back zip closure, I don't doubt that it'll fit like a glove. And, yes, it has pockets! $298 at Saks Fifth Avenue Tuckernuck According to one happy buyer, this adorable midi has a "timeless gingham print [that's] elevated by a slight shimmer in the fabric," so you better believe it's anything but basic. But that's not all you have to look forward to if you make the splurge. The breezy seersucker frock boasts side seam pockets, elastic shirred cap sleeves and an empire waist that hugs at just the right place, so I have a feeling it'll make you look as good as you feel in it. $168 at tuckernuck 14 Zara Dresses You'll Want to See (& Buy) for Yourself PureWow's editors and writers have spent more than a decade shopping online, digging through sales and putting our home goods, beauty finds, wellness picks and more through the wringer—all to help you determine which are actually worth your hard-earned cash. Climber dies from 3,000 feet fall at Denali National Park
A Seattle man who was ascending a climbing route at Denali National Park in Alaska fell 3,000 feet to his death on June 2, the National Park Service said. Alex Chiu, 41, was climbing along the West Buttress route with two others when he fell from Squirrel Point towards the Peters Glacier icecap. His body was recovered two days later, NPS said in a news release on June 4. The group was ski mountaineering, which involves climbing uphill before skiing back downhill. Chiu was not using a rope at the time of the fall, officials said. Denali National Park encompasses more than six million acres of Alaska's wilderness. Mount McKinley, the park's highest peak at more than 20,000 feet, is also the tallest mountain in North America, according to NPS. Falls are the No. 1 cause of death at the park, according to NPS. Over 120 climbers have died at the park since 1932, a spokesperson told USA TODAY in 2022. Along the West Buttress route's treacherous upper portion, at least 14 climbers have died since 1980, NPS said in 2024. Chiu's body was recovered two days after the fatal fall and was transferred to the state medical examiner, NPS said. The two other climbers who were with Chiu at the time of the fall said they lowered over the edge of the peak as far as possible but could not hear or see him. They descended the route to seek help, the release said. Search crews couldn't immediately reach the site by ground or air because of high winds and snow. Once weather began to clear on June 4, rangers searched the area via an aerial helicopter and were able to recover Chiu's body, NPS said. Chiu was an aerospace engineer, according to his LinkedIn profile. In an Instagram post on May 19, Chiu said he spent most weekends alpine climbing before the COVID-19 pandemic. "When I am in the mountains, I realize I was at my best, I was smart, witty, passionate, and bold," he wrote. He said he mostly stopped climbing in the aftermath of the pandemic, but in recent years, began growing more interested in returning to the sport. "So tomorrow I am getting on an airplane to Alaska, in an attempt to climb the third highest peak in the world because I don't want to know what happens to a dream deferred…," he wrote.
