India has a new answer to the growing menace of unmanned aerial threats with the successful development and testing of 'Bhargavastra', an indigenous, low-cost Counter Drone System inHard Kill mode. Designed by Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL), the system signifies a major leap in the nation's defence capabilities, specifically aimed at countering Drone swarms with precision and cost-effectiveness.
The system underwent rigorous live-fire testing at the Seaward Firing Range in Gopalpur, where three trials were conducted on May 13 in the presence of senior officials from the Army Air Defence (AAD). Two of these involved the firing of single rockets, while one featured a salvo mode test, launching two micro rockets within just two seconds. All four rockets achieved their intended objectives, validating the technology's reliability and operational readiness.
'Bhargavastra' offers a unified, layered solution for countering aerial threats. Its first line of defence includes unguided micro rockets capable of neutralising drone swarms within a 20-meter lethal radius up to 2.5 km away. The second layer incorporates guided micro-missiles—already tested in earlier phases—for pinpoint accuracy against more complex threats.
This dual-layer architecture ensures that both large-scale drone swarms and individual UAVs can be effectively engaged, minimising risk to critical installations and troops on the ground.
Engineered for deployment across varied terrains, including high-altitude zones above 5,000 meters, the system is highly modular, allowing for easy integration with jamming and spoofing technologies for a soft-kill layer. Sensors including Radar, Electro-Optical (EO) and RF receivers can be configured as per mission requirements, ensuring compatibility with existing network-centric warfare infrastructure.
At the heart of the system is a sophisticated Command-and-Control Centre featuring C4I (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence) capabilities. Its radar system can detect even Low Radar Cross-Section (LRCS) drones from 6 to 10 km, while the EO/IR sensor suite ensures high-precision tracking and identification of aerial threats.
This integrated setup offers complete situational awareness, enabling operators to detect, evaluate, and neutralise both individual drones and coordinated swarm attacks in real time.
According to SDAL, while several global defence players are working on similar systems,Bhargavastra stands out due to its indigenous design, cost-efficiency, and open-source architecture. It is one of the few systems globally to offer multi-layered, hard-kill and soft-kill capabilities specifically tuned for swarm drone neutralisation.
The successful development of Bhargavastra is not just a technological breakthrough but also a strategic move in strengthening India's air defence umbrella. It adds a potent, agile weapon to the arsenal of the Indian Armed Forces while reinforcing the Make in India mission through indigenous innovation and manufacturing.
As drone warfare becomes a growing concern across conflict zones, Bhargavastra positions India among a select group of nations capable of developing comprehensive, scalable, and effective counter-drone technologies.

PTI has reported that the deal includes the design, manufacture, supply, testing, and commissioning of 96 Metropolis metro cars Under the contract, Alstom will supply 32 three-car trainsets. The company will also provide 15 years of maintenance services after the warranty period. This will include cleaning, obsolescence management, and upkeep of plant and machinery at the metro trains will be manufactured at Alstom's facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, aligning with the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. Each trainset can carry around 900 passengers and is designed for multiple unit operations. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said that Maharashtra is not only cementing its position as India's leading industrial state but is also emerging as a key destination for global investors. The chief minister was speaking at the event '2025 India Conference: Accelerating Growth, Maharashtra @ One Trillion' hosted by Bank of America at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai. Highlighting the state's growing role in defence manufacturing, data infrastructure, and startup innovation, Fadnavis said Maharashtra is now prepared for the industries and innovations of the future. The CM said that the Make in India initiative has significantly benefited Maharashtra. Citing the recent success of 'Operation Sindoor', he said it showcases India's evolving defence production capabilities, with Maharashtra emerging as the true epicentre of the country's defence manufacturing sector, despite the presence of industry clusters in states like Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. He pointed out that Maharashtra currently houses nearly 60 per cent of India's total data centre capacity, and Mumbai has become the fintech capital of the country. The state is also becoming a magnet for startups, offering fertile ground for tech and innovation-driven enterprises. 'Global investors are seeking stable and secure environments to invest in, especially within global supply chains—and India is best placed to offer that,' Fadnavis said, adding that Maharashtra is fully geared to seize this opportunity. The CM said that Maharashtra attracted over Rs 16 lakh crore in investments during the recent World Economic Forum at Davos. Over half of this is directed towards manufacturing, he said, reflecting the tangible impact of the Make in India policy on the ground. Given the geographic limitations of coastal Mumbai, Fadnavis outlined the development of a 'Fourth Mumbai' around the Vadhavan Port region. The proposed city will be three times the size of existing urban zones, featuring themed developments such as edu-city (with 10 international universities),sports city, medicine city, knowledge city and innovation city. He said that going beyond Mumbai, Thane, and Pune, the government is accelerating industrialisation in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. 'Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is being positioned as an EV manufacturing hub. Gadchiroli is set to become a new 'steel city' with over Rs 1 lakh crore in investments. Cities like Nagpur, Nashik and Dhule are witnessing large-scale investments in IT, manufacturing, and infrastructure,' he said Fadnavis also introduced a three-stage administrative vision: immediate action plan – Maharashtra 2029; mid-term strategy – Maharashtra 2035; and long-term vision – Maharashtra 2047. These plans will integrate emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) into governance and economic planning. A new advanced cybersecurity centre is also in the pipeline to address growing cybercrime threats in a unified manner. Concluding his address, Fadnavis reiterated that Maharashtra is not only chasing rapid industrial and infrastructure growth but is building a resilient, future-ready economy capable of supporting India's rise on the global stage.
