
Saudi Roads Authority Deploys World's Largest AI-Powered Road Inspection Fleet During Hajj - Middle East Business News and Information

To prepare for this year's Hajj season, the Saudi Roads General Authority (RGA) has launched the largest and most advanced AI-powered road inspection fleet in the world. This fleet consists of 18 high-tech units utilising five state-of-the-art technologies, all aimed at improving road safety, enhancing quality, and ensuring an exceptional experience for pilgrims.
The fleet includes specialized equipment for scanning surface damage, measuring the International Roughness Index (IRI), assessing pavement layer thickness, evaluating structural deflection, and testing skid resistance. Among the highlights are seven surface damage scanners equipped with high-resolution cameras, laser units, GPS, and data storage systems for precise analysis and immediate maintenance decisions, especially critical on routes to the holy sites.
Four IRI units evaluate road smoothness and driving comfort using laser sensors. Another three use multi-frequency radar to check pavement layer thickness, while another three measure road deflection under traffic loads using advanced sensor systems. A single skid resistance unit simulates rainy conditions to test friction levels and ensure safety in adverse weather.
The fleet is completed by a mobile digital imaging scanner that inspects unpaved elements such as road signs and safety barriers, assisting in identifying potential risks and optimising maintenance planning.
The Roads General Authority, the national regulator of Saudi Arabia's Road sector, aims to elevate the quality of roads to rank sixth globally by 2030 and reduce road fatalities to fewer than five per 100,000 people. Saudi Arabia currently boasts the world's leading intercity road connectivity, with a total network exceeding 73,000 kilometres.

Egypt's Tourism Minister Inspects Pilgrims' Camps in Saudi Arabia
Israa Farhan, Ali Abu Dashish In a proactive move to support Egyptian pilgrims, Egypt's Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, conducted a field visit today to the camps of Egyptian tourism pilgrims in Arafat, Saudi Arabia. The purpose of the visit was to ensure that all pilgrims are receiving the full range of services and enjoying the highest levels of comfort during their Hajj journey. During the visit, Minister Fathy inspected facilities and met with pilgrims to personally verify that services aligned with expectations set by the ministry and travel agencies. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards of care, particularly in light of extreme temperatures across the holy sites this year. Following the on-site inspection, the minister held a remote video meeting via Google Meet with members of the official tourism Hajj delegation. This digital monitoring approach is part of the Ministry's ongoing efforts to integrate modern technology into the management of the Hajj season. It allows for real-time, live supervision by all committee members, ensuring swift response to issues and continuous service delivery. The remote system facilitates direct oversight of the daily operations conducted by the 13 field committees formed as part of the official tourism mission. These teams are deployed across camps housing more than 40,672 Egyptian pilgrims to check on their well-being and ensure full compliance by tourism companies with agreed Hajj programs. Minister Fathy praised the efforts of the mission teams, particularly their dedication to staying active throughout the day in challenging weather conditions. He urged all teams to continue intensive on-site presence and remain alert to any emergencies or complaints. The goal, he stressed, is to offer a safe, seamless, and exemplary Hajj experience that reflects the strength and reliability of Egypt's tourism Hajj system. Free Wi-Fi WIll Be Rolled Out Across All Major Hajj Sites in 2025
Pilgrims will have high-speed internet access at Masjid Al-Haram, An-Nabawi, Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah as part of a national digital expansion plan. High-speed internet will be freely available to all pilgrims during Hajj 1446 AH (2025), according to a new digital infrastructure rollout announced ahead of the pilgrimage season. The move is part of an ongoing national strategy to modernize services and enhance the Hajj experience through seamless connectivity. The initiative includes full Wi-Fi coverage across the Grand Mosque in Makkah (Masjid Al-Haram), the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah (Masjid An-Nabawi), and key sites such as Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah - locations that form the heart of the pilgrimage journey. Designed to support real-time communication, navigation, and access to services, the network will allow pilgrims to stay connected with loved ones and share their experience in real time. Technical implementation is being carried out in collaboration with local and international telecom providers to ensure both speed and reliability. Pilgrims will be able to connect via official access points, which will be clearly marked across the designated areas. The project forms part of a broader digital ecosystem being developed around Hajj and Umrah, which includes eSIM support, smart applications, live transport data, and health service tools.
