James Tavernier reaches a decade on Rangers rollercoaster as one constant remains amid yet another clean slate

Tavernier led Russell Martin out as captain and now works for him as Champions League chance rolls around again
James Tavernier has spent a decade spinning round the Rangers rollercoaster. More often than not, he's finished up crashing into the buffers.

But for all those repeated disappointments, the Ibrox skipper is still setting out with the hope that this year's thrill ride will be the one that stays on track right until the triumphant end.

Sunday marked the 10th anniversary of the day the right-back arrived in Glasgow alongside Wigan team-mate Martyn Waghorn as part of a joint £200,000 swoop.

Tavernier has certainly repaid that sum in goals down the years. But silverware has been harder to come by for a man crowned British football's highest ever scoring defender.
He picked up his solitary league winner's medal under Steven Gerrard in 2021, with a Scottish Cup coming a year later under Gio van Bronckhorst only days after his side had lost out on Europa League glory in Seville.
He completed the set under Philippe Clement with Gers' 2023 League Cup success but that's scant reward for 10 years at Ibrox.
Yet, as he begins life under Russell Martin on Tuesday tonight - his seventh full-time boss since joining the club - the excitement levels remain as high as they were the day Mark Warburton brought the 33-year-old to the club back in 2015.
'My wife sent me a picture this morning to remind me that it was my tenth anniversary at the club,' he grinned. 'So yes, it's gone quickly, really quick.

'I've said in previous years, all the years of being here have been a rollercoaster. But throughout it all, I've always given 110% no matter what and I'll continue to do that.
'I always want to win. That's always been instilled in us as a little boy. I've always wanted to win no matter what. If it's playing PlayStation against my son or it's playing a match or in training, I always want to win.
'So I'm always going to continue to do that until even later in my career and even after I've retired and something that I'll go into afterwards, I want to win whatever I do.

'I'm always excited for every season to begin because it's always a fresh slate.
'The philosophy that the manager wants us to play with the ball and off the ball. It's going to be intense and that's been shown in the preseason that we've been doing - lots of running and the games behind closed doors and just the implements that he wants us to play and you'll see a real big difference of how we played over the past few years to this season.
'It's obviously been a quick four weeks during pre-season. The training's been really intense. The manager's really drilled in his philosophies of how he wants to play as a team, the structure. So the boys have really taken it on board and we're really looking forward to tomorrow night.

'I think you'll see in the way we play, with the ball and without the ball. I think that'll be evident when tomorrow unfolds and as the season unfolds, you'll certainly see a different style of play that I've probably not played since I've been here.
Back in 2018 when Martin was spending a brief stint at Ibrox on loan as a player, he was being led out by Tavernier. Now he's the man barking the orders.

'I've had a couple of conversations with some of the younger lads, letting them know my age and that I've played with him and that I was captain!
'But, it's been really smooth and the conversations that we've been having, you can see his mindset of what he wants. And that's the bright side of it and what he's demanding from us as a team, me myself and it's really exciting.
'Could I see his managerial credentials back then? Typically not when you play. He was a really intelligent footballer, had a great career.

'But you obviously saw what he was starting to build when he went to Swansea, and obviously Southampton.
'The way he wants his teams to play. So it's obviously different compared to what he was playing as a player, but it's nice to see.'
The heat will be on Gers tonight as they kick-off their Champions League campaign against Panathinaikos at Ibrox.
But with temperatures around the 35 degree mark expected in Athens for next week's return, Tavernier knows Gers can't afford to be caught cold.
He said: 'We want a positive result just to show everybody what we're capable of, what we're working to.
'But obviously, we want to put ourselves in a good position going over there. We know it's going to be a hot one over there in the second leg, so you obviously want to try and prioritise getting this first leg, hopefully with a clean sheet with a few goals, and then you can go over there and the other team has to chase. Our objective is to win tomorrow.'

£48m star asks to be left out of match after agreeing transfer deal with Chelsea

Jorrel Hato asked to be left out of Ajax's squad to face Como 1907 this weekend after agreeing personal terms with Chelsea, according to reports in the Netherlands. Chelsea have splashed the cash across another busy transfer window, sealing deals for Jamie Gittens, Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr for a combined fee of around £190million. Despite already strengthening at the back with the addition of Sarr from Strasbourg, the Blues have set their sights on making Hato, 19, their next signing and talks with the full-back's camp have been advancing at a pace in recent days. Hato, who is comfortable operating at both left-back and centre-back, has welcomed the interest from Chelsea and the versatile Dutchman is said to be actively pushing to force through a transfer to Stamford Bridge. But while Hato has informed Ajax that he wants to leave, the Eredivisie outfit rejected Chelsea's opening bid and sent a counter offer back to west London for the teenager. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. With talks ongoing, Algemeen Dagblad report that Hato told Ajax head coach John Heitinga that he would 'rather not play' in the side's Como Cup final defeat to Como on Sunday. It's claimed this is 'entirely related' to his potential move to Chelsea, though 'that doesn't say anything about the status of negotiations, which are currently difficult'. Hato was also absent for Ajax's semi-final win over Celtic earlier in the week. However, Heitinga insisted this was because the defender was yet to gain full match fitness having only recently returned to training. Ajax are said to be holding out for a fee of between €55-60million (£48-52.5m) for Hato, who still has three years remaining on his current contract in Amsterdam. Speaking to De Telegraaf on Wednesday, Hato's agent, Humphry Nijman confirmed that Chelsea had opened discussions to close a deal for last term's Eredivisie Talent of the Season. 'Yes, the club [Chelsea] have contacted Ajax,' he told the Dutch newspaper. Hato featured 50 times for Ajax across the 2024/25 campaign and played a key role as the club narrowly missed out on the Eredivisie title after finishing just one point behind PSV Eindhoven. In an interview with Ajax's official website last month, Hato outlined the goals and ambitions he hoped to fulfil in his career. At the time, the Netherlands international was keen to stress that he felt at 'home' at Ajax. 'The smartest thing is to look ahead to pre-season, that's what I do,' Hato said. 'Of course you want to achieve things in the end: the Champions League, a World Cup and a European Championship, I still have plenty of time. I don't think I absolutely have to win the Champions League in two years. 'In the Dutch league, you have to show how good you are against the big clubs. Ultimately, I have to continue to develop the things I am already good at, so that it becomes top. 'How do I describe my time at Ajax? Ajax is home for me. I just feel at home here.' Oisin McEntee warns Hearts will be the team everyone hates playing as Derek McInnes fundamental kicks in

The Irishman shone in an all action display as Sunderland were swatted aside at Tynecastle ahead of Aberdeen Premiership opener Oisin McEntee reckons teams will hate facing Hearts after new boss Derek McInnes put the players through a gruelling pre-season. The Jambos are in good shape going into their Premiership opener against Aberdeen a week tonight after building on four League Cup group wins with a 3-0 victory over Sunderland on Saturday. The Black Cats have spent in excess of £100million to get ready for their Premier League return. But that financial gulf did not matter as the McInnes ' men gave them a torrid time at Tynecastle with their high-pressing game. That style of play demands fit players and McEntee insists that will not be an issue after coming through his hardest pre-season. The 24-year-old said: 'You don't want teams to enjoy playing against you and we have players in the team who have that bit of quality. 'We have a good mix of players who want to be competitive and win the ball back to let the players go and express themselves. 'A lot of work goes into it on the training ground in terms of that style and it's about fitness as well. 'It's high intensity, it is going to be quite a lot of work. 'But it's paying dividends when it comes to the games. It feels a lot easier than other pre-seasons, in terms of when you go into the game you feel ready, you feel at it. 'It's been really enjoyable. It's probably been my hardest pre-season in terms of double sessions but you need that going into the Premiership season. 'You need to be fit, you need to be strong. I feel really good for it, my body feels really good.' As a midfield enforcer who came in from League Two Walsall at the start of this summer, he's loving the demands put on him by McInnes. McEntee said: 'That's my kind of game when I'm in the middle and I really enjoy that side, the nasty side of it – winning second balls, first balls and just doing my job for the team. 'It's been enjoyable. Wherever the gaffer wants me to play, I'll play – I don't mind. Playing alongside Cammy Devlin in there is great too. 'He's an unbelievable player and it shows with how many games he's played at this club. He's played at this level for a long time, so it's enjoyable having him in there backing me up.' At the top end of the park, Hearts have players who can add some flair in fellow summer signings turned crowd pleasers Claudio Braga and Alexandros Kyziridis. McEntee added: 'Those two boys can mix it too, winning the ball back. 'The look of Braga, he's physical, he's winning the ball back on Saturday but has that bit of class too. They've been unbelievable since they came in.' Hearts did not look back after taking the lead in Craig Gordon's testimonial courtesy of Braga 11 minutes in. Lawrence Shankland and Kyziridis found the net after the break with a scoreline that did not flatter the Gorgie outfit. McInnes has added seven recruits this summer and Burkina Faso winger Pierre Landry Kabore is expected to complete his move today. Hearts have also made an offer for Valur Reykjavik midfielder Tomas Bent Magnusson and McEntee insists all the new boys have settled in well. He said: 'That's testament to the recruitment, bringing good people in, first and foremost. We went to Spain and everyone gelled really well. It's been a really enjoyable pre-season getting to know people.'

Mats Knoester confident after stunning Celtic as Aberdeen star looks to smash Hearts hoodoo

The Dons haven't won at Tynecastle since 2017 and kick off their season in Gorgie against old gaffer Derek McInnes and a team in form Mats Knoester believes Aberdeen can smash their Hearts hoodoo – after crushing their Celtic curse to lift the Scottish Cup. ‌ The Dons haven't won at Tynecastle since 2017. ‌ But Cup hero Knoester is confident that is about to change when Jimmy Thelin 's men head there for their Premiership opener on Monday night. ‌ The 26-year-old Dutch defender stated: 'They're a good team, a big team as well. I think it's going to be an exciting game. 'It's not going to be an easy game away, but I think it's going to be interesting to see. 'Always the first game in the season is interesting to see how the teams are after the pre-season. 'We're aware that it's a tough game, away at Hearts, but I also think the past doesn't really matter. 'And if I can go back to Celtic at Hampden – we don't have a really good record against Celtic and then you win the game. 'So, in football I don't think you should go too much back to the past and then look forward.' ‌ Hearts have appointed former Dons boss Derek McInnes and Knoester expects them to be one of their main rivals for third spot. He accepted: 'Yeah, if we look a bit further, I think they're also one of the competitors. 'Of course, as Aberdeen, you're one of the bigger teams, and Hearts is that as well. ‌ 'So, in that way, I think we should compete with each other. 'But I prefer to just go week by week. I do that with myself and also with the team and their goals.' ‌ Knoester knows that Aberdeen's Cup win will mean they will have a target on their backs this season, but he is confident Thelin's men can handle the extra pressure. Knoester admitted: 'Yeah, it can be. (It's) No problem. If they want to see it like that, it's fine.' The Pittodrie side wrapped up their pre-season with defeats to English Premier League Fulham and Ipswich, who were relegated from the tip flight last term. ‌ They lost the games 4-1 and 3-1, respectively, but Knoester believes the games were exactly what Aberdeen needed. He claimed: 'I think that was the goal, to have some big opponents, let's say, like Fulham and now Ipswich, especially going into Europe as well. 'We have a tough season coming, so I think if you want to improve something, you also have to play against the better teams, because they will show you what's needed to be on that level. 'I think one big difference was consistency – you see how consistent they are, and if they do make a mistake, they make up for it. They make a foul or they're back fast enough. ‌ 'Also, if there's a rebound, there's somebody there who taps it in, while we just miss it. 'Stuff like that, I think we can learn from that. You're the one that sets a standard for yourself.' ‌ Boss Thelin also experimented in the two games and former Ferencvaros stopper Knoester added: 'What we wanted to do is play a high line, maybe a bit more extreme than what we normally do. 'Just to try and create pressure on them and take a bit more risk. 'That's one thing that makes it sometimes a little bit more difficult or challenging to cover every space. ‌ 'Obviously we need to adjust a little bit on that towards next Monday.' Guaranteed European group stage football will also put an additional strain on the Aberdeen players. Former boss Barry Robson lost his job when Dons struggled with European games last time but Knoester believes that won't be the case now. He said: 'We trained under really heavy circumstances, in pre-season a lot of high-intensity metres. 'We did everything we could to be ready for that.'
