Liverpool cult hero shares bold presidency plans just months after retiring

Ragnar Klavan, the center-back who played for Liverpool between 2016 and 2018, has announced a bold plan to become the President of the Estonian FA.
He made 130 senior appearances for the Estonian national team during his career. Klavan and Aivar Pohlak, who has been in the post for 18 years, are the only candidates running. The election will come in June and Klavan is confident of victory.
"The win will come," he is quoted as saying by ERR. "Since we began this journey on December 10, our team has taken major steps forward. I just had a gut feeling that people were waiting for change. But there wasn't yet the 40-plus member 'yes' or even enough votes to file a candidacy. Just a sense that change is needed and expected in Estonian football."

To win the election, Klavan would need to get the support of teams in the Estonian league. But he says that some sides don't want to publicly state their advocacy of him for fear of upsetting Pohlak.
"[There] are probably 20 or so who said they don't want to do it publicly, which for me raises questions about the current leadership style," Klavan said. "They don't want to attach their name to it and risk facing the current president's disapproval.
"There is definitely still some uncertainty. There are 106 members who will ultimately vote for the president of the football association, and those 40+ are the ones who've specifically said 'yes, Ragnar, we believe in you and will vote for you.' There are still many who are undecided.
"There are some I haven't met with yet. There's still time until June 19. But we're working every day and doing everything we can to make sure the right person becomes president of the football association on June 19."
Klavan said some clubs wanted him to bring fresh leadership, to listen to their input, and involve them more in shaping Estonian soccer. Many are said to be frustrated by being overlooked given Estonia remains ranked 121st in the FIFA rankings.
That is slightly worse than the 118th it attained in 1993, shortly after it gained independence, and well below its peak of 57th. Klavan also said the key to raising the level of Estonian soccer lies in heavily investing in coaching, an area he feels can be improved.
Klavan, now 39, played for Elva, Tulevik and Flora in Estonia. He then moved to Heracles Almelo and AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands, and FC Augsburg in Germany. After Liverpool, he moved to Cagliari and then came back to play his last couple of seasons in Estonia with Paide Linnameeskond and JK Tallinna Kalev before retiring a few months ago.

Ten Hag says he can't work Harry Potter-style magic to hasten Leverkusen rebuild

LEVERKUSEN, Germany (AP) — Erik ten Hag has warned he can't work Harry Potter-style magic to forge a new-look Bayer Leverkusen into a true team as the ex-Manchester United manager prepares for his first game in charge. Ten Hag's first job since leaving United sees the Dutch coach faced with a major rebuild at Leverkusen following the departure of his title-winning predecessor Xabi Alonso and key players including Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Granit Xhaka. 'I know how to manage processes and you can't force the process. It's impossible. No one is like Harry Potter,' Ten Hag said on Thursday ahead of his first game on Friday in the German Cup against fourth-tier Sonnenhof Grossaspach. 'Harry, he can really (quickly) construct a team, and in the same time it's successful, but that is not how top football works.' Ten Hag used the Harry Potter line in his time at United, too. Following a loss to Liverpool in September 2024, he said he was no Harry Potter while explaining the difficulties of relying on players who hadn't had much game time. Less than two months later, Ten Hag was fired by United after four losses in nine Premier League games. Ten Hag said he and the Leverkusen players will have to work hard together through the first half of the season and into the spring to be able to fight for trophies at the end of the campaign. 'For me, the start of the season is the middle of March, April 1, then you have to be in a position that you can win something,' he said. 'Until that time, we all have to work unbelievably hard to get into that position, to develop and progress the game model and to develop the team and the individual players.' New signings ahead of Friday's game include American attacking midfielder Malik Tillman, who Ten Hag said wasn't fit to play, ex-Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah and former Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken. Leverkusen confirmed midfielder Robert Andrich was the captain after goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky left for Monaco. ___ AP soccer:

Premier League power rankings: Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea chasing Liverpool

The 2025-26 Premier League season kicks off Friday, Aug. 15, when the defending league winners Liverpool host Bournemouth at Anfield. Liverpool now faces the daunting challenge of a title repeat quest and must do so after a tragic summer during which forward Diogo Jota died in a car crash on July 3. On the pitch, Liverpool will have a number of worthy challengers. The clubs that finished in the three spots below Liverpool on last season's table – Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City – all spent (and will continue to spend until the transfer window closes on Sept. 1) in hopes of catching the Reds. The high-priced arms race should make for a thrilling season ahead. MORE: Behind the Scenes with NBC Sports' Premier League team ahead of season opener It should be no surprise that the reigning champions sit atop USA TODAY Sports' first EPL power rankings. However, where do the other 19 squads stand? Here are our rankings: 1. Liverpool The Reds will need to overcome the tragic death of Diogo Jota in their title defense. 2. Arsenal Is Viktor Gyökeres the missing piece after three consecutive second-place finishes? 3. Manchester City Anything short of the Premier League title will be a failure for Pep Guardiola's squad. 4. Chelsea Can Chelsea ride a wave of momentum from their Club World Cup win into the new season? 5. Aston Villa After an inspired run to the Champions League quarterfinals last season, the Villans must settle for the Europa League this season. 6. Newcastle United Will Alexander Isak still be with the team come September? 7. Tottenham Hotspur Adding Mohammed Kudus is a big boost for new manager Thomas Frank. 8. Manchester United Was last season's 15th-place finish an outlier, or a sign of what's to come at Old Trafford? 9. Brighton & Hove Albion Barely missing out on European competition will have the Seagulls hungry for more in 2025-26. 10. Bournemouth The Cherries have steadily improved their station in the table in each of their past three seasons in the Premier League. 11. Nottingham Forest With its Europa League spot, Nottingham Forest enters European competition for the first time since 1996. 12. Fulham Consistent middle-of-the-table finishers since Premier League return expected to finish mid-table again. 13. Everton After calling Goodison Park home since the 1800s, the Toffees will break in a fancy new stadium this season. 14. Crystal Palace The reigning FA Cup champions have to settle for the UEFA Conference League after losing an appeal. 15. West Ham United The Hammers have been in the Premier League since the 2012-13 season, but that run could be in jeopardy. 16. Brentford Former Liverpool backup 'keeper Caoimhín Kelleher finally gets his opportunity to be a No. 1. 18. Leeds United Leeds has spent just three seasons in the Premier League since 2004. 19.
