CBSE to conduct Class 10 board exams twice a year from 2026 session

Business Standard12 hours ago

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Wednesday said it has approved norms to conduct Class 10 board exams twice in an academic year from 2026.
According to the approved norms, the first phase will be conducted in mid-February, with results announced in April. It will be followed by the second phase in May, with results declared in June.
CBSE examination controller Sanyam Bhardwaj said it will be mandatory for students to appear for the first phase, while the second phase will be optional. 'Students will be allowed to improve their performance in any three subjects out of science, mathematics, social science and languages,' he added.
This approval comes months after the examination control body released a draft policy for stakeholder feedback in February this year.
The approved norms also state that Class 10 students from winter-bound schools will have the option to appear for the board exams in either phase.
The new scheme, however, has faced some criticism from the opposition, with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports raising concerns over the policy.
In its recent report, the parliamentary panel led by Congress Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh stated that the draft notification leaves room for question paper leaks and other irregularities, particularly because non-core subjects could be examined over two to three days.
According to the draft scheme, core subjects such as science, mathematics, social science, Hindi and English would have fixed examination dates in both sessions. Exams for other subjects, except regional and foreign languages, would be conducted two to three times based on student preferences.
The draft scheme also states that students would be allotted their examination day based on a formula devised by the CBSE and the subject combinations they have opted for.
'Students will not be given a choice to select the dates of examinations and question papers of these subjects will be taken back from the students after the examination is over,' the draft scheme states.

One more held; forensic team collecting evidence: Police in Kaliganj blast case

Two days after a 13-year-old girl died in a bomb explosion in Kaliganj, in the Nadia district, a forensic team on Wednesday examined the place where the incident took place and collected samples from the spot, officerssaid. With the arrest of one more person on Wednesday, the number of arrests in the case has now reached five, police said. According to the police, all five arrested persons are affiliated to the ruling TMC. An FIR has been registered against 24 individuals in connection with the incident. The minor had succumbed to her injuries, with the post-mortem report prima facie confirming death due to a bomb explosion. The victim's family continues to assert that it was a targeted attack allegedly by a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker. Her parents Sabina Seikh and migrant labourer Hossain Seikh (who returned from Odisha on Tuesday), have again demanded a CBI investigation, and have vowed to 'pursue every possible course of action' against those responsible. 'The initial reaction of the police was okay. But it won't last long. Once protests die down, everything will go back to what it was,' said the victim's inconsolable mother. 'Our daughter would not have been killed if the police hadn't remained indifferent and acted on time. We had been facing repeated threats and attacks from the Trinamool for being CPIM supporters,' the minor's mother further alleged. Birbhum TMC MP Satabdi Roy said, 'This is a very sad incident. It has overshadowed the joy of winning.' The incident occurred on Monday, when the Kaliganj assembly by-poll results were declared, which the ruling TMC won by a significant margin. The victim's family alleges that the bomb was hurled from a TMC victory procession, 'deliberately targeting' their house due to their political affiliation. Divine justice, Modi fought Indira's dictatorial ideas, uprooted dynasty politics in 2014: Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said that it was 'divine justice' that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as a 25-year-old, opposed the 'dictatorial ideas' of then PM Indira Gandhi during Emergency and, in 2014, 'uprooted dynastic politics from the country'. Shah was speaking while releasing a book titled The Emergency Diaries – Years that Forged a Leader by BlueKraft Digital Foundation, chronicling Modi's experiences during the anti-Emergency movement. Terming Emergency as 'a black chapter' in the history of India, Shah said while it was necessary to move on from 'bad experiences', instances such as the Emergency needed to be remembered for eternity lest they occur again. He also spoke about the rationale behind the government's decision to rename June 25 as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas (Death of Constitution Day)', saying 'such an era should only be described in such harsh words'. Shah said Modi contributed to the anti-Emergency movement led by Socialist leader Jayaprakash Narayan and the Bharatiya Jana Sangh's Nanaji Deshmukh. 'As a young volunteer who was part of the movement… visiting and looking after the families of those who had been arrested, making arrangements for their medical treatment, distributing secret newspapers which were being published underground in places like markets, intersections among women and students – he (Modi) led this struggle in Gujarat as a youth leader who was 24-25 years of age,' said Shah. He said Modi often used to work under disguise, 'sometimes as a seer, sometimes as sardarji, sometimes as hippie, sometimes an incense stick seller, sometimes a newspaper vendor'. 'And see today, whenever divine justice is done, how it is done. The same 25-year-old youth who rose up against Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's dictatorial ideas, visiting home after home, village after village and several cities, the same person… uprooted dynastic politics from the country in 2014,' said Shah. Among the dignitaries present on the dais was veteran journalist and Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts president Ram Bahadur Rai. Shah appreciated Rai, saying he was J P Narayan's close friend who witnessed the Emergency from close quarters. Rai, who was jailed for over a year during Emergency, is a former news editor of the Hindi daily Jansatta. Conferred the Padma Shri in 2015, Rai was the first person to be arrested under the Maintenance of Security Act prior to Emergency, and during it as well, for being on a committee that led the J P movement. An image of the blank editorial page of The Indian Express, published on June 28, 1975 following the imposition of the Emergency, was displayed from the dais. In his address, Shah mentioned The Indian Express and Jansatta for being frontrunners in protesting against the Emergency through blank editorials.
