Lulu makes rare admission on mental health - 'it feels scary'
Scottish icon Lulu is advocating for mental health as she launches her own charity.
Ahead of her charity's first major event, Lulu is urging those suffering from mental health issues to try and speak to their loved ones about what they are experiencing, saying: "It feels scary but you've got this". She claims that these chats are important as mental health wasn't talked about when she entered the industry.
The Scots singer will be leading the first significant event - a sponsored walk - on May 19 for her charitable fund Lulu's Mental Health Trust. The 76-year-old decided to set up this fund while writing her memoir that covered her 60 years in the music industry.
While recalling the beginnings of her career, the Mirror reports, the star realised that mental health was a major factor throughout her life, whether it was her own or a loved ones.
She said: "The process of writing my memoir opened my eyes to the role that mental health has played in my life. Whether that's my own mental health, my loved ones, colleagues, whatever.
"When I was first coming into the industry we didn't talk about it! But it's so important, and I want to give back. People will understand what I mean when they read the book I think… it's coming soon."
Looking back on her career, she added: "It feels kinda full circle. I've supported lots of charities over the years and still do, but to be able to put this together myself and help make a difference is really touching.
"We never talked about mental health or mental illnesses when I was growing up, I'm glad it's now something we're aware of.
"It feels important to take a minute to look back at everything I've achieved and take time to think how I can use it to give back to those that need it."
Coming off the back of her Champagne For Lulu farewell show last year, which was extended due to high demand, Lulu announced her new mental health charity was being set up in February.
The singer began her career with her catchy tune 'Shout', which she performed alongside her band The Luvvers. After the track reached number seven in the UK singles chart, Lulu went on to have another 10 UK top 10 singles and one top 10 album.
For her charity's first major event, Lulu is set to lead a mammoth walk which starts in E1 0AQ at the school she filmed 'To Sir With Love' and finishes at the old Decca studio where she recorded 'Shout' in NW6 3AU.
Throughout the walk, she will pass other places that are connected to her impressive six-decade career.
When asked what she hoped people would take away from this campaign, she said: "The message we want to put out about how important it is to nurture and look after your mental health.

"If they take away anything, I'd love for it to be that there is help out there if they need it. If you're struggling please talk to someone. Talk to a friend, a family member, or someone trained in what to do and say. It feels scary, but you've got this."
She added: "People have been so generous. I didn't expect so many people to sponsor me and it's only our first initiative! There will be more to come."

ITV Love Island fans fiercely defend Scots star Alima Gagigo after brutal coupling up comment
Love Island fans were all saying the same thing just minutes into the first episode of Love Island tonight after Scots beauty Alima Gagigo received a harsh remark from the boy she had just chosen to couple up with. Love Island kicked off its twelfth season tonight with thirteen new contestants entering the iconic villa in the hopes of finding love under the Spanish sun. Seven gorgeous girls and six handsome hunks made their debut on the ITV dating show on Monday evening as they were welcomed by host Maya Jama. Among them is Glaswegian beauty Alima Gagigo who is the only Scot on Love Island this year so far. The 23-year-old graduate, chose to blindly couple up with construction project manager Blu Chegin after being drawn to his dating profile, but it seems there is already trouble in paradise for the pair. After Maya revealed that he had been chosen by Alima, Blu made a controversial comment as he said: "Every girl looks beautiful." Maya replied to his eyebrow raising remark as she repeated: "Yes but Alima chose you." Fans at home were quick to spot the awkward moment as they took to X to fume over Blue's careless remark. Alima, having already caught viewers attention thanks to her fiery stand out Scottish accent, has already garnered support from viewers after Blu brutally told her: "You're not my type on paper." Viewers at home were left furious by his comment as one wrote: "Alima is 100% out of Blu's league. His attitude is gross. #loveisland". After Alima told Blu she's not "feeling him", another fan chimed in: "LOVE that Alima called Blu's disrespectful a** out. #loveisland." A third agreed: "Alima clocking Blu's nonsense already. Glad she's a smart girl. #loveisland" A fourth remarked: "I need Alima to couple up with someone else so I can vote blu out effective immediately." Someone else applauded Alima: "Alima knowing her worth from day 1 & not settling for Blu #loveisland #loveislanduk". Another awkwardly pointed out: "Blu said he didn't have a type in his interview but Alima is not his type on paper. #LoveIsland" However, Alima herself has also already ran into an awkward moment which did not go unnoticed by fans. After claiming she could speak Spanish, she was put on the spot and asked to show off some of her multilingual talents. Fans were left cringing by the awkward scene and branded the 23-year-old as a 'liar' as one wrote: "I don't think Alima speaks Spanish #LoveIsland." Another remarked: "Alima a damn liar about I speak Spanish #LoveIsland." A third joked: "Alima is me when I lie on my CV. Don't ask me questions", alongside two laughing emojis. Somebody else who was amused by the moment wrote: "Alima adding Spanish to her CV just cos she speak Portuguese is too funny to me", alongside a laughing emoji A fifth wrote: "Alima is giving everyone that took GSCE Spanish and can only say hello my name is, guiltyyyy #LoveIsland". However, Alima could now find herself in trouble for tomorrow night's episode after bombshell American Islander Toni walked in to the villa and decided to couple up with Ben, who was originally coupled up with Shakira, leaving Shakira single. Maya announced at the end of Monday's night episode that Shakira would need to spend the next 24 hours getting her graft on and getting to know the other boys to keep her place in the villa. In scenes that are likely to air on ITV on Tuesday evening, Shakira will select the boy she wants to steal from another girl. However, there is a catch. The chosen male Islander must agree to the swap. If Shakira choses a boy and they don't agree to the coupling up, they will remain with their current partner and Shakira will be dumped from the villa. If Shakira is successful and the swap goes through, the partner of the boy she chooses will pack their bags instead. As Alima and Blu have already hit a rough patch, could Shakira use this as an opportunity to seek out Blu and send Alima packing? Viewers will need to wait until tomorrow night to find out what happens. Love Island airs on Tuesday June 10 on ITV at 9pm.

Braveheart's Mel Gibson makes surprising confession about filming of iconic Scots movie
MEL Gibson has admitted he faked it as a film director when he was making Braveheart. The Aussie-born superstar, 69, said he had to pretend to the crew and enormous cast that he was totally in control of the £150million blockbuster. 2 Mel Gibson celebrated the 30th anniversary of Braveheart in Philadelphia Credit: Getty He came clean at a Fan Expo convention in Philadelphia, US, as the Oscar-winning epic celebrated its 30th anniversary. Gibson, who played legendary Scots freedom fighter Sir William Wallace, recalled: 'It was only my second outing as a director and it was a massive shoot. 'There were about 3,000 people on the set. They're all looking at you like you know what you're doing. 'So I pretended I knew what I was doing. 'But somehow it all came together. "Logistically speaking, it was a monster — from feeding everybody to getting them all to look like they were in the war.' Gibson said his 'proudest achievement' was avoiding serious injuries in the movie's many battle scenes. He explained: 'One guy got a hangnail and another got a broken nose and twisted ankle but that was it. 'It was a long shoot — there were 105 shooting days. We didn't get any days off.' 'But I'm really proud of the end result. It really paid off.' Braveheart fans go mad for Mel Gibson as he's asked about independence Elsewhere a former child star from Braveheart has revealed how he used to slag off Mel Gibson's dodgy Scots accent on set - so the Hollywood A-lister begged him to help improve his brogue. Andrew Weir from Ayr played William Wallace's best pal Hamish in the Oscar-winning flick and even managed to get family friend James Robinson a crucial part as the young freedom fighter. But the pair would regularly fall into hysterics at the Aussie actor's attempt to master our dialect. Andrew, who now lives in New York, says: 'I think Mel liked that we were kids and not intimidated by him. We used to laugh at his accent and he would ask us to help him make it better.'

ITV Love Island star dumped from villa before show started in cruel twist
ITV Love Island star dumped from villa before show started in cruel twist One Love Island star got dumped from the villa - before the show even aired One Love Island star has already been dumped from the villa (Image: ITV ) One Love Island star has already faced the chop from the hit ITV show before it even airs, as Maya Jama makes a return to host the new series, which is set to commence on our screens tonight. Although Love Island makes its highly-anticipated return this evening, fans are in for a shock as one contestant faces an early exit due to a dramatic twist – they'll be leaving moments after their arrival in the villa. It's been disclosed that tonight will see a female contestant leave following the entrance of a bombshell. Toni, a high-end VIP waitress from the glitzy city of Las Vegas, was revealed just yesterday as a new addition to the villa lineup. In disclosing her aspirations, she expressed her desire for "someone that can make me laugh - I'm super outgoing. And someone that's quite active. Maybe one day we could start our own family together." For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter Adventurous Toni also shared her excitement for British lads: "It's time to try something new! I have some British friends and they're pretty charming. I think all Americans love a good accent. British men are just more polite, with better manners." However, the bubbly American's entry spells immediate trouble for one of the original stars, as her presence will cause the swift removal of another contestant. The unnamed individual has already been ousted from the tropical setting, with viewers poised to witness the drama unfold during tonight's premiere episode, reports the Mirror. Article continues below "This girl will be sorely missed as was already proving to be a big character. The was absolutely gutted to leave. But the series has twists and turns at every stage and this isn't the usual dumping viewers might expect after a bombshell arrives," a source disclosed to The Sun. "Executive producer Mike Spencer-Hayter has promised drama for the tenth anniversary and this format point will not disappoint." Speaking with The Mirror about what to anticipate in the upcoming series, the show's executive producer revealed his plans. Mike expressed: "If sex happens, we'll show it. The Hideaway will be open 24 hours. We need to keep the show fresh and exciting. After 10 years, the stats speak for themselves. The show will continue to thrive. We the producers need to stay ahead of the curve. The whole 'twists and turns' thing is about making the show fresh. We're going to give it all we've got." Article continues below As she gave a glimpse into the upcoming episodes, new host Maya Jama remarked: "I feel like they forgot last year that you could come in the Hideaway at any time. We did tell them, but they kept forgetting!"
