Inter Miami coach blasts MLS decision to discipline Lionel Messi for All-Star absence

USA Today27-07-2025
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano criticized Major League Soccer's decision to suspend Lionel Messi for the team's home match vs. FC Cincinnati on Saturday, July 26 over skipping the All-Star Game.
Messi and Jordi Alba were both out due to league discipline as Inter Miami and Cincinnati played to a scoreless draw at Chase Stadium.
'Now I have a question: What if today's game was an away game?" Mascherano said afterwards. "Would you ask for Leo not to play? Because when it comes to filling stadiums and making money, no one complains.
'The thing is: This game happened to be a home game. That's the issue. I'll leave it up to you to decide.'
Mascherano also questioned officiating against Inter Miami. The club is the only team in the league to not have a penalty kick granted this season.
There were two instances against Cincinnati where they should have received a penalty call, Inter Miami contested. Luis Suarez and Fafa Picault incurred contact on two separate plays, but no penalty was awarded.
'A team that has scored as many goals as we have in MLS … zero penalties,' Mascherano said. 'Strange, considering how much we're in the area, zero penalties. I'll leave that for you to think about.'
Inter Miami did get the most controversial call of the match to go their way against Cincinnati, though.
Cincinnati's Miles Robinson scored a header (90'+3'), but appeared to hit Inter Miami defender Noah Allen in the head during the score. The play was ruled a foul on the field, and VAR wasn't enough to overturn it to a goal.
'The referee delayed the whistle to allow the opportunity for VAR to review for a possible goal. After the VAR check, the referee's decision was confirmed,' lead referee Tori Penso said in a pool report after the match.
Mascherano was seen yelling 'do your job' at least twice towards officials, including Penso, resulting in a yellow card being shown in the first-year coach's direction in the 70th minute.
Both sides earned one point in the standings after the draw. Inter Miami maintained fifth place in the MLS Eastern Conference with 42 points, while Cincinnati (49 points) dropped to second place behind Philadelphia (50 points).

Reds plan to activate Hunter Greene from the injured list to pitch against Phillies

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Hunter Greene will return to the Cincinnati Reds' rotation Wednesday night. The right-hander will start against visiting Philadelphia after being out since June 4 with a strained right groin. The same injury sidelined Greene for two weeks in June. Greene is 4-3 with a 2.72 ERA in 11 starts this season. The 26-year-old was selected to the All-Star Game last year for the first time. In three rehab starts for Triple-A Louisville, Greene allowed 11 runs in 11 innings. ___ AP MLB:

Jason Timpf says Andrew Wiggins would make the Lakers an elite team

There are nearly two months to go before the start of training camp for the 2025-26 NBA season. According to conventional wisdom, significant trades rarely happen during the second half of the summer, but in recent years, such deals have taken place involving stars such as Damian Lillard, Jrue Holiday, Karl-Anthony Towns and Julius Randle. The Los Angeles Lakers have a strong roster right now, but most would agree that they're one or two complementary players short of being a true championship contender. Earlier this summer, there were rumors that they were trying to trade for veteran two-way forward Andrew Wiggins, but those rumors quickly died out. Podcaster Jason Timpf said on a recent episode of "Hoops Tonight" that landing Wiggins, who was an All-Star starter just three years ago, would make the Lakers an elite team. 'I do think an Andrew Wiggins trade would immediately make the Lakers a top-tier contender. He would immediately address their athleticism and defense needs. 'He specifically, in my opinion, is one of the top tier, if not second, or second tier to top tier, somewhere in that range -- one of the top 10 apex defenders that you could put on an opposing star in a playoff series, and he can do it against multiple different types of stars. 'I also think he just makes a substantial upgrade in athleticism, which is what they would need. I also think he would play really well offensively off of Luka. 'And I think the Lakers could pull off that trade, including Dalton [Knecht] and maybe some second-round compensation and not having to include their first-round pick.' Wiggins, 29, was a major contributor to the Golden State Warriors when they won the NBA championship in 2022. He was traded to the Miami Heat midway through this past season in the deal that brought Golden State Jimmy Butler, and he doesn't fit the Heat's rebuilding plans. But Timpf doesn't think the Lakers would actually make a trade for Wiggins, even if the price is right. 'But the Lakers seem uninterested in making that type of deal because of Andrew's age and because of their timeline.' Plenty think the Lakers are saving salary cap space in order to chase after Giannis Antetokounmpo or Nikola Jokić either next summer or during the 2027 offseason. Depending on whether they're indeed looking to seriously go after either superstar and the degree of such a pursuit, they may refuse to take on any additional salary for the next year or two, even though Wiggins has a player option for the 2026-27 season. The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 18.0 points and 5.8 3-point attempts a game while making 37.4% from 3-point range this past season.

Jermaine Burton: Bengals receiver absent for Sunday's training camp practice

Cincinnati Bengals rookie receiver Jermaine Burton wasn't on hand with the team for the early part of Sunday's practice during training camp at Paycor Stadium. The Enquirer's Kelsey Conway reported that Burton wasn't with the rest of the receivers and wasn't on the rehab field. Burton was a full participant in Saturday's practice, and there was no indication that he was injured. Burton was a third-round pick of the Bengals in the 2024 NFL draft. He attended Georgia and Alabama. Burton played in 14 games as a rookie, making one start. He finished the season with four catches for 107 receiving yards.
