AfriForum, Solidarity withdraw from national dialogue first convention
The group said it would adopt a 'wait and see' approach to the national dialogue while engaging with cultural communities to address the country's issues.
'We are too busy trying to address the consequences of failed ANC policies, and do not have the time to listen to their outdated blame politics and a repetition of unimaginative ideas for weeks and months on end.
'Our experience is that 'community dialogues' can bear more fruit than a state dialogue, and discussions between communities yield more practical results. That is why we plan, in co-operation with other cultural communities, to submit a position on the country's pressing issues to the national dialogue, but we will not participate on Friday.'
Solidarity CEO Dirk Hermann said the ANC wants to pursue its own agendas with the dialogue that has been happening in communities.
'People talk at workplaces, around the braai, at sporting events and in churches about a yearning for a different dispensation. The state hears this and wants to hijack that spontaneous community dialogue.
'It was conceived in the Union Buildings by the president. The moment that happened, the national dialogue was stillborn.'

DA fires councillor for helping ANC secure Beaufort West mayoral chain
Beaufort West new mayor, Castro de Bruin. Image: Facebook IN A dramatic turn, ANC councillor Castro De Bruin was elected mayor of Beaufort West, a DA-led council. The election of a new mayor this week comes after the resignation of former DA mayor Sias Reynolds. With 13 seats in council, there were five votes in favour of DA candidate Georgina Duimpies and seven in favour of De Bruin, while one councillor was excused. Acting municipal manager Amos Makendlana confirmed: 'Councillor De Bruin was elected on Tuesday, 12 August 2025 during the council sitting and will assume office with immediate effect. We congratulate Mayor De Bruin on this significant election and look forward to working together towards a better future for all residents. We wish him well on his new journey.' De Bruin is the Central Karoo regional coordinator of the ANC Youth League. 'For the past four months, Beaufort West has been without a mayor, following the resignation of a DA councillor. This leadership gap disrupted the municipality's work, slowed down service delivery, and left residents without the stable leadership they deserve. Today, that changes. The election of Mayor De Bruin an ANC councillor in a DA-led council is a historic moment. It shows the power of unity, resilience, and principled leadership to rise above political divisions for the good of the people,' said the ANCYL. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ The DA said it had terminated the membership of a second councillor who had broken rank and voted in favour of De Bruin. 'It is regrettable when personal ambitions hinder the recovery of an entire municipality. This morning, the DA terminated the membership of a second councillor. We hold our public representatives to the highest standards of service delivery and expect them to implement DA policies, which have a proven track record when applied effectively. A new councillor will be sworn in shortly, restoring our majority and enabling us to continue delivering for the community,' said DA Western Cape leader, Tertuis Simmers. Cape Times

Inquest into 1993 Highgate Hotel massacre to resume next month
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it is satisfied with the progress made during the past three sessions of the formal inquest into the 1993 Highgate Hotel massacre. This is one of the cases referred to the NPA by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) for further investigation and potential prosecution. The inquest ran from January 27 to February 7, continued from March 24 to March 28 and reconvened from Monday to Wednesday this week. The final session is scheduled for September 1 to September 5. The NPA said that to date, more than 20 witnesses have testified before judge Denzil Potgieter at the Special Tribunal in East London. 'They include the investigating officer from the Hawks, survivors, families of the deceased, ballistic experts, former police officers, commanders from the Azanian People's Liberation Army and private investigators appointed by affected families,' said NPA spokesperson Luxolo Tyali. The court has also conducted an inspection in loco at the scene of the incident. The inquest stems from a decision by the Eastern Cape director of public prosecutions Barry Madolo to establish whether anyone can be held criminally liable for the attack. On the night of the massacre, during the tense period leading up to the 1994 democratic elections, armed assailants opened fire at the Highgate Hotel's bars in East London. Stanley Hacking, Douglas William Gates, Royce Michael Wheeler, Deon Wayne Harris and Deric John Whitfield were killed. Seven other people were seriously wounded, suffering permanent injuries and disabilities. 'Three survivors and two family members of victims testified during the TRC hearings. No amnesty applications were made by suspected perpetrators,' Tyali said. While the attack was initially attributed to the armed wing of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), subsequent investigations could not confirm this. 'The NPA also notes with concern allegations made by some witnesses against certain of its officials. These will be addressed during the inquest to ensure that both the individuals concerned and the organisation are cleared of any unfounded claims.' Tyali said the NPA hoped this inquisitorial process will help provide much-needed closure to the victims' families, survivors and the broader public. Depending on developments in response to the presiding judge's directions issued on Wednesday — calling for anyone with information about the circumstances leading to the deaths to avail such information to the court — four more witnesses are expected to testify when proceedings resume in September.
