Court allows Kejriwal's plea seeking NOC for passport renewal

The Hindu04-06-2025

A Delhi court on Wednesday allowed the plea filed by former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who had moved the court seeking a no objection certificate (NOC) for the renewal of his passport.
Mr. Kejriwal's passport expired in 2018, and he wanted to get it renewed for 10 years.
Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh, on May 29, had issued notice to Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), probing the excise policy case, seeking their replies.
Responding to the notice, the CBI opposed Mr. Kejriwal's request, stating that the norms followed in different courts of the CBI regarding such matters are that renewal permission is granted for five years. The ED, in its oral submissions, also made the similar point.
The counsel of Mr. Kejriwal submitted that renewal permission be granted for a full 10 years as the AAP leader, in any case, has to seek permission to travel abroad.
The court, however, clarified that its order would not in any manner fetter the discretion of the Passport authorities in granting or refusing the renewal of a passport under the Indian Passports Act and the relevant rules.
'The 'no objection' granted vide this order shall remain in force for a period of 3 months from today within which the applicant may get his passport renewed. It goes without saying that the present order is not granting any permission to the applicant to travel abroad and if he ever desires to travel abroad for any purpose, he shall have to file appropriate application seeking such a permission,' the court said.

"For entire 5 years, they have done corruption": Chhattisgarh CM slams opposition for alleged Liquor scam

Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], June 14 (ANI): Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the opposition Congress, accusing it of large-scale corruption during its tenure, in connection with the alleged Rs 2,000 crore liquor scam. Speaking to the media, CM Sai asserted that central and state agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate (ED), are conducting a comprehensive investigation into the case, and assured that strict action will be taken against those found guilty. 'For the entire 5 years, they have done corruption. Now, central and state agencies are investigating it, and action will definitely be taken against the culprits. If they feel that injustice is being done to them, then they can definitely go to court. And what can they do? They can do this only because they are in the opposition,' he said. This comes after the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Raipur Zonal Office provisionally attached three immovable properties worth Rs 6.15 crore under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection with the Chhattisgarh Liquor Scam case. According to the ED, Congress Bhawan, Sukma, residential house at Raipur in the name of Kawasi Lakhma and residential house at Sukma in the name of Harish Kawasi (son of Kawasi Lakhma) have been attached. In a statement, ED initiated an investigation based on the FIR registered by the ACB/EOW Chhattisgarh under various sections of the IPC, 1860 and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, regarding the liquor scam in Chhattisgarh. ED investigation revealed that Kawasi Lakhma, the then Excise Minister of Chhattisgarh, was receiving Rs 2 crore per month out of the liquor scam, receiving POC Rs 72 crore in 36 months. As per the official statement, the investigation led to the seizure of crucial pieces of evidence, which demonstrated Kawasi Lakhmain's utilisation of cash in the construction of the properties mentioned above. Rs 68 lakh was employed in the construction of Congress Bhawan, Sukma; Rs 1.40 crore was utilised in the construction of the house of Harish Lakhma, and Rs 2.24 crore was utilised in the construction of his own house at Raipur. Kawasi Lakhma is presently under judicial custody. ED investigation revealed that the corruption in the liquor scam, which ran between 2019 and 2022, resulted in a massive loss to the state exchequer and generation of more than Rs 2161 crore worth of POC by commission of predicate offences, as per the release. It is pertinent to mention here that the said attachment continues the previous attachment of immovable properties having a value of nearly Rs 205 crore. Further investigation is in progress. (ANI)

‘ED action taken on behest of BJP': Cong protests attachment of its Sukma office

Raipur: Congress staged a protest across all the district headquarters of the state on Saturday, burning effigies of the BJP govt and the enforcement directorate (ED) to condemn the ED's attachment of the Congress office in Sukma. Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress committee president Deepak Baij criticised the ED attachment of the party office , stating the agency is acting as an 'associate organisation' of the BJP. He made these remarks while addressing media persons on Friday. Baij said the ED's action was taken at the behest of the central govt and the BJP, despite the Congress providing all financial details for the construction of the Sukma office. He termed the move an 'attack on democracy'. In protest, the Congress organised demonstrations and burnt effigies of the ED across all district headquarters in the state on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Shahar Jila Congress committee in Raipur staged a protest at Rajiv Gandhi Chowk here. Congress workers gathered at Rajiv Gandhi Chowk, raising slogans against the BJP govt and the ED. There was a brief scuffle between party workers and the police during the effigy burning. Speaking on the occasion, the party's city president Girish Dubey said that sealing the Congress office in Sukma by the ED is a direct attack on democracy, the Constitution, and the freedom of the opposition. He added that despite all documents related to the construction of the Congress Bhawan being submitted to the ED previously, the attachment of the building shows the central BJP govt is misusing central agencies to intimidate and suppress political opponents. Former MLA Vikas Upadhyay warned that if the Congress Bhawan is not reopened immediately and the ED's politically motivated action is not investigated, the Congress party will protest from 'street to Parliament'. The ED had attached the Congress party office in Sukma district on Friday, along with assets linked to former excise minister MLA Kawasi Lakhma and his son. The action, taken under the PMLA, formed part of the ongoing investigation into the alleged over Rs 2000 crore scam during the previous Congress govt. AAP government wasting money on fake advertisements: Bikram Singh Majithia

Ludhiana: Former minister and senior Akali Dal leader, Bikram Singh Majithia , on Saturday, said that the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government has nothing to show in the name of performance but is wasting money on fake advertisements. Addressing election meetings in favour of party candidate Parupkar Singh Ghumman in Ludhiana West, Majithia said that all major projects in the state, including those in Ludhiana, were implemented by the SAD government led by Parkash Singh Badal. He claimed that during the last three and a half years, the AAP government led by Bhagwant Mann had failed to initiate a single project. He asked people whether they had seen Bhagwant Mann or Arvind Kejriwal inaugurating any project in the state. Lashing out at the CM, he accused him of completely surrendering before Arvind Kejriwal, who is calling the shots in the state. He claimed that the Punjab government was spending Rs 800 crore annually on fake advertisements on the orders of Arvind Kejriwal. According to him, the budget for advertisements during the SAD government was around Rs 30 crore annually, which was increased to Rs 150 crore during the Congress regime, and had now been increased to Rs 800 crore. Majithia said that this had led to Punjab landing in a debt trap of Rs 4 lakh crore. MSID:: 121850993 413 | Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
