He appeared in court on Saturday for a bail hearing. A decision is scheduled for Wednesday, July 2.

In a post on X on Saturday evening, Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe said while it was encouraging to see that the police investigation into the incident has progressed, he was 'very disturbed to learn that the person charged is a city employee who was on leave. As a community and as an employer, the actions at the Monument do not represent our values.'

Sutcliffe thanked police and added that he has asked city officials to 'take all appropriate action in light of these developments.'
A statement attributed to interim city solicitor Stuart Huxley confirmed that Aspenlieder was on leave at the time of the incident.

'The City is reviewing the charges and will be swiftly undertaking all appropriate action given the situation,' said Huxley.

'The recent act affecting the National Holocaust monument was deplorable and is counter to the values we seek to uphold in our community. We extend our deepest sympathies to members of our community impacted by this disgraceful act.'

As the matter is the subject of a police investigation and is before the courts, the city will provide no further comment, said Huxley.

The monument, located at 1918 Chaudière Crossing, was sprayed with the words 'FEED ME' in large block letters on the side adjacent to Wellington Street. Red paint was also sprayed along the building's facade.

In 2014, the Criminal Code was amended to add the charge of mischief to a war memorial.

The definition applies to a property 'that primarily serves as a monument to honour persons who were killed or died as a consequence of a war, including a war memorial or cenotaph, or an object associated with honouring or remembering those persons that is located in or on the grounds of such a building or structure, or a cemetery.'

Man fatally shot by RCMP in Sask. happened after officers encountered group in woods
DESCHAMBAULT LAKE – RCMP in Saskatchewan say a fatal police-involved shooting last week happened after officers encountered a group of people in the woods, and there was a confrontation. Police say in a news release that on Friday morning, two RCMP officers encountered five people in a wooded area near the community of Deschambault Lake. The release says that during the encounter, a confrontation occurred between the officers and one of the five people, a man from Deschambault Lake. The officers shot the man, the release says, and while they provided initial medical assistance, he did not survive. The officers were not injured. Mounties say several of the group were arrested, and one of the people is charged with reckless discharge of a firearm. 'A firearm and several replica firearms were located and seized at the scene,' the police news release from Saturday said. The family of the man who died has been notified, police said. Four people were arrested at the scene. Two were released without charges. A 31-year-old man from Pelican Narrows, Sask., is charged with reckless discharge of a firearm. The release noted that no injuries were reported to police in connection with the charge. Police said he is also charged with possession of a weapon contrary to section 91(2) of the Criminal Code, and had an outstanding warrant in relation to a separate Deschambault Lake RCMP investigation. A 20-year-old woman from Deschambault Lake is charged with breach of an undertaking in relation to that separate Deschambault Lake investigation. Both are to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court on Monday morning. Police said the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team has been notified about the officer-involved shooting and will investigate the circumstances around it. They said they cannot provide any additional information at this time due to the ongoing investigation by the police watchdog agency. Crews battle 2 fires in different parts of city at same time Friday afternoon
Investigations are underway into two fires that broke out in different parts of the city at almost exactly the same time Friday. At around 2:20 p.m., crews responded to reports of fire at an apartment building in the 0-100 block of Varsity Estate View N.W. Crews arrived to discover residents evacuating and heavy smoke coming from one end of the building on the second floor. They were able to locate the blaze in a resident's kitchen and put out the fire quickly. They also located one elderly resident, who was transported for treatment to a nearby ambulance. Crews were able to limit the damage to a single unit. Nearby units were temporarily evacuated, but sustained no. damage. At 2:30 p.m., crews responded to reports of a building fire on the 0-100 block of Wrexford CR S.W. Crews discovered a single resident who had fled with their pets. Crews entered the home, where they were met with a high volume of smoke on the second floor. They conducted a coordinated fire attack with ventilation to knock down the fire and remove the smoke at the same time. The fire was limited to a second-floor bathroom. No one was injured.
