Messi and Neymar's former Barcelona colleague bringing winning mentality to Kitchee

For Roger Riera, the new Kitchee centre-back, it was both a blessing and a curse that his emergence at Barcelona coincided with the club's greatest era.
An awestruck Riera trained with Lionel Messi, Neymar and Andres Iniesta. On the flip side, he could see no way into the Catalans' glittering squad, so he left for Nottingham Forest three months after captaining Barcelona to the 2014 Uefa Youth League title.
'It was always my dream to reach the Barcelona first team, and when we won the youth league it looked great for us, we were looking for the next step,' Riera said.
'But Barcelona were a great team, they were right at the top and it was difficult to reach those levels. Not everyone can do it.'
Catalan Riera spent nine years in the club's famed La Masia academy before moving, aged 19.
'We had one playing style, but they teach you a lot,' he said. 'You get used to winning every week, and I've kept that mentality. They instil strong personal values, and you learn about different cultures, because you play with people from around the world.'

Son Heung-min partnership was among best in Premier League history, Harry Kane says

Harry Kane has paid tribute to his former Tottenham Hotspur teammate Son Heung-min, describing their partnership as 'one of the best' in English Premier League history following the South Korean's departure from the club this week. Son, who combined with Kane for 47 league goals to form a lethal partnership for the best part of a decade at Spurs, joined Los Angeles FC on a record-breaking Major League Soccer transfer on Wednesday. The 33-year-old South Korea skipper had moved to North London from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, bagging 173 goals and 101 assists in 454 appearances and leading them to their first trophy in 17 years by winning the Europa League title in May. 'Massive congratulations to him and his career at Tottenham,' Bayern Munich striker Kane told reporters after his side's 4-0 friendly win at home against his former club Spurs on Thursday. 'First and foremost, a great person. I've got to know him really well as a friend, and just how humble he is and how good a guy he is. World Cup winner Juan Mata's advice for Hong Kong champions' Australian striking recruit

New Tai Po striker James Temelkovski has arrived in Hong Kong with the recent advice of a World Cup and Champions League winner ringing in his ears. Last summer, Temelkovski secured a dream professional opportunity with the Australian A-League team Western Sydney Wanderers. However, the 27-year-old Australian made only eight substitute appearances in his single campaign. His solitary goal, against Central Coast Mariners, was created by former Chelsea and Manchester United forward Juan Mata. 'Even though he's a world-class footballer, as a human being he's one of a kind,' Temelkovski said. 'He'll put his arm around you and wants to know you and understand how you think. He was an incredible friend and mentor. 'He knew my time at the club was tough, but he told me he believed in me, that I was an unbelievable player, and I couldn't allow my head to go down. He said I had to keep striving to get where I want, because that's what a real footballer does.' Juan Mata with the World Cup trophy after Spain's victory in 2010. Temelkovski was close enough with Mata – part of Spain's 2010 world champion squad and a Champions League winner with Chelsea in 2012 – that the pair devised forfeits for their darts matches.

Al-Hilal sanctioned for skipping Hong Kong-hosted Saudi Super Cup, blaming Club World Cup

Al-Hilal will be banned from next year's Saudi Super Cup if they qualify, after their recent withdrawal from this month's four-team competition in Hong Kong. The Saudi Arabia Football Federation's (SAFF) disciplinary and ethics committee announced the decision on Tuesday. It came after holders Al-Hilal pulled out of the Super Cup, scheduled to be played in Hong Kong from August 19 to 23, citing player fatigue following their Club World Cup campaign. They lost 2-1 to Fluminense in the quarter-finals on July 4. 'Al-Hilal refused to participate in the Saudi Super Cup for the 2025-2026 season after the official schedule for the competition was issued,' the disciplinary committee said in a statement.
