Thane man beaten up: Accused made to touch his feet & apologise in front of ex-Sena UBT MP

Indian Express13 hours ago
Two days after a video of a man being beaten up by three men outside the Thane railway station went viral, another video has surfaced in which the accused are made to fall at his feet and apologise by the Shiv Sena (UBT). One of the accused is even slapped. All this happens in the presence of former Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Rajan Vichare in a closed room.
In the video, the three men are told to speak in Marathi despite not knowing the language and are warned 'such things will not be allowed in Maharashtra'.
On Monday, the three men beat up Thane resident Kiran Jadhav (43) outside a mobile phone store near the Thane railway station. Soon after, Shiv Sena (UBT) workers reached out to Jadhav and took him to the Thane Civil Hospital. The party workers then lodged an FIR at the Naupada police station against the three men identified as Shanmukh Pujari, Saurabh Jaiswal and Jayantilal Purohit.
'Jadhav wanted to recharge his SIM card at the mobile phone store. When one of the accused said the shop did not have the facility to do it and it must be done online, it led to an argument. The accused then beat up Jadhav,' a police officer said.
As the sections involved were not major, police issued a notice to the accused and allowed them to leave. Several Shiv Sena (UBT) workers had gathered at the Naupada police station in support of Jadhav.
Next day, two of the accused were brought to an office where Vichare and Jadhav were present. On camera, the accused were asked to identify themselves and fall at the feet of Jadhav and apologise.
Nudged by someone, Jadhav also slapped one of the accused, as seen in the video. Later, in the video, Vichare is heard telling the accused that they beat up a 'Marathi manoos' and 'it won't work in Maharashtra'.
The accused, standing with their hands folded in one corner, apologised again following which they are asked to talk to everyone in Marathi, to which they agree.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray said the incident has nothing to do with Marathi-non-Marathi issue. 'There was an altercation between them over disagreement in a shop over charging of phone. This has been mentioned in the FIR as well. It has nothing to do with language of either of them. I urge all to not give it a colour of any dispute over language,' Thackeray said.

'Do Aamir Khan, Javed Akhtar speak in Marathi?': Maharashtra minister Nitish Rane slams assaults over language; issues 'third eye' warning, says it's a Hindutva regime backed by Hindu votes, Mohammed

NEW DELHI: Days after a group of men allegedly affiliated with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena ( ) assaulted a shopkeeper in Mira Road for not speaking Marathi, state minister Nitesh Rane said, "show courage, go to Null Bazaar, Mohammed Ali Road and tell people there to speak Marathi. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now " Reacting to the incident, Rane said, 'If they have the courage, go to Null Bazaar, Mohammed Ali Road and tell people there to speak Marathi. It's a Hindu government—we will not tolerate this.' 'Do Javed Akhtar, Aamir Khan speak in Marathi?", he said. The remarks came amid growing criticism over the assault, which took place Tuesday morning at a sweet shop in Mira Road. A video of the incident went viral, showing a man—identified as the shop owner Babulal Khimji Chaudhary—being slapped after an argument over language. 'They asked for water, then slapped me' According to the FIR filed at Kashimira police station, seven unidentified men, allegedly wearing MNS badges, entered the shop around 10.30am asking for water. A worker, who reportedly hails from another state, responded in Hindi—sparking a heated exchange. 'They said I need to know Marathi if I want to work here. When I said that people in Maharashtra speak many languages, they got angrier and slapped me,' Chaudhary told police. 'They recorded the video and circulated it online,' he added. The men allegedly insisted that all workers in the state must know Marathi. MNS defends workers, blames 'arrogance' An MNS office-bearer defended the group, claiming the shopkeeper was 'arrogant' and had provoked the argument by saying all languages were spoken in Maharashtra. The men had earlier been at Balaji Park to celebrate the state government's withdrawal of its three-language formula, which had triggered opposition protests over possible 'Hindi imposition'. Police have registered a case against the unidentified assailants and are verifying the video and identities.
