Shell-shocked lion from Ukraine thriving after rescue

The Advertiser3 days ago
A lioness rescued from Ukraine is "thriving" and has fallen in love, a year after being evacuated to the United Kingdom.
Three-year-old Yuna was rescued after living in a three-by-four-metre enclosure with a bare concrete floor.
When evacuated, she could not stand because of a severe concussion caused by shell shock.
Her story became the catalyst for the Big Cats in Crisis campaign, which eventually saw four more lions brought to Kent from Ukraine.
A fundraising campaign collected £500,000 ($A1.0 million) to build a centre for the big cats.
A year on, Yuna is thriving.
"Yuna is a different animal from the one we met a year ago," Big Cat Sanctuary's managing director and wildlife expert Cam Whitnall said.
"The change in her has been incredible to witness. She's full of personality, loves exploring her new surroundings, and is finally living the life a lion should."
The lioness has even struck up a romance with fellow rescue lion Rori, who lives in an enclosure next to hers.
"She's not just a rescue, she's a testament to resilience and the symbol of hope that inspired the rescue of Rori, Amani, Lira and Vanda," Whitnall said.

Beyond CEO says company will not open, operate retail stores in California

Beyond (BYON) has issued a statement from Marcus Lemonis, Executive Chairman of Bed Bath & Beyond: 'We will not open or operate retail stores in California. This decision isn't about politics – it's about reality. California has created one of the most overregulated, expensive, and risky environments for businesses in America. It's a system that makes it harder to employ people, harder to keep doors open, and harder to deliver value to customers. The result? Higher taxes, higher fees, higher wages that many businesses simply cannot sustain, and endless regulations that strangle growth. Even when the state announces a budget surplus, it's built on the backs of ordinary citizens who are paying too much and businesses who are squeezed until they break. At Bed Bath & Beyond, our responsibility is to our customers and our shareholders. We will not participate in a system that undermines both. Instead, we are investing in a California strategy that works: 24-48-hour delivery, and in many cases, same-day service. Californians will continue to get the products they love through – but without the inflated costs created by an unsustainable model. We're taking a stand because it's time for common sense. Businesses deserve the chance to succeed. Employees deserve jobs that last. And customers deserve fair prices. California's system delivers the opposite. That's why Bed Bath & Beyond will serve California customers directly through on our terms, and with their best interests at heart.' Wia Gold secures $19m commitments via placement for Namibian gold project

Gold-focused exploration company Wia Gold has secured binding commitments to raise A$30m ($19.4m) through a share placement with existing, sophisticated and institutional investors. The funding will primarily support resource development, exploration activities, ongoing project studies, test work, development and permitting, and social and environmental activities at the Kokoseb gold project in Namibia. Additionally, a portion of the capital will go towards Wia Gold's broader exploration portfolio. The funds will also cover corporate costs, working capital and the expenses associated with the placement. The placement involved the issuance of 100 million new fully paid ordinary shares at an offer price of A$0.30 per share. This price represents a 4.8% discount to the last traded price of A$0.315 on 15 August 2025 and a 2.1% discount to the ten-day volume-weighted average price of A$0.306 up to and including that date. The new shares will rank equally with the company's existing fully paid ordinary shares. Wia executive chairman Josef El-Raghy said: "Wia has made significant progress at Kokoseb over the past 12 months, most recently with the mineral resource estimate upgrade to 2.93 million ounces of gold for 89 million tonnes at 1g/t [grams per tonne]. 'The strong support for the placement received from both domestic and offshore institutional investors allows the company to continue with its strategy to expand the Kokoseb deposit via an accelerated exploration programme. The scoping study remains on track for completion in the current quarter with many of the elements of a subsequent definitive feasibility study already under way.' Argonaut Securities acted as the lead manager and bookrunner for the placement, with Tamesis Partners and SCP Resource Finance serving as co-lead managers. Following the completion of the placement, Wia Gold's cash balance will stand at approximately A$55m. Trump administration to rule on biofuel exemption requests, delay reallocation decision, sources say

By Jarrett Renshaw (Reuters) -The Trump administration is expected to rule on a growing backlog of requests from small refiners seeking relief from the nation's biofuel laws as early as Friday, but will delay a decision on whether larger refiners should make up for some of the exempt gallons, according to two sources familiar with the planning. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is expected to rule on a number of the 195 pending small refinery exemption requests that date back as far as 2016 on Friday, the sources said. The rulings will be a mixed bag, including some partial denials, but will not be a sweeping win for small refiners, according to one source briefed on the decisions. The administration is expected to issue a supplemental rule as early as next week to seek public comment on whether or not they should force larger refiners to make up for the exempted gallons in a process known as reallocation. The EPA said earlier this year that it would force larger refiners to make up for future exempted gallons, but was silent on how it would treat exempt gallons from the dozens of backlogged requests. The supplemental rule will include various options in a bid to test how the market may respond, the sources said. How the administration deals with exemption requests and the reallocation issues will have consequences for the oil and agricultural industries, and impact the price of commodities from gasoline and renewable diesel to soybeans and corn, along with the companies that produce them. In the past, widespread exemptions without reallocation have sent credit prices lower, along with prices for soybeans and ethanol.
