Nurses' strike enters day 3: Healthcare system under strain in Vidarbha

Nagpur/Yavatmal: As the indefinite strike by govt nurses entered its third day on Saturday, critical healthcare services across Maharashtra remained in turmoil. In major urban hospitals like Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Mayo in Nagpur, as well as rural districts such as Yavatmal and Akola, the absence of nursing staff caused widespread disruption, delaying surgeries and forcing relatives to step in for basic patient care.
On Saturday, the strike also witnessed a new twist as GMCH authorities issued a circular — based on a DMER directive — warning that newly recruited probationary nurses participating in the strike could face 'break in service' under Rule 43(2) of the Maharashtra Civil Services Rules, 1994. The move created panic among probationers, but state-level leaders of the nurses' union, including president Manisha Shinde and general secretary Sumitra Tote, swiftly assured all members that legal protection would be provided and no employee would be left behind.
"This is not just about pay. It's a battle for respect, security, and the future of every nurse. We will not back down," said Shinde, addressing protesting nurses at GMCH.
Rural healthcare too feels the pinch in Yavatmal
Meanwhile, in Yavatmal district, nursing services in govt hospitals have also come to a halt, further straining rural healthcare delivery. Nurses working as seniors, public health nurses, and instructors are actively participating in the strike.

"The govt must listen. Patients are suffering, yes, but we've been suffering silently for years," said Suresh Madankar, a senior nurse and union representative in Yavatmal.
"This strike is our last resort," he added.
To manage the crisis, authorities in Nagpur have deployed around 70 nursing students and 40 temporary aides, but their efforts are insufficient given the scale of the disruption. The association maintains that services will not resume unless their core demands — including salary parity under the 7th Pay Commission — are accepted.
What Next?
As the standoff continues with no fresh dialogue from the govt, the strike threatens to deepen the healthcare crisis across Maharashtra. With both urban and rural hospitals under pressure, the onus now lies on the state authorities to open negotiations and prevent further collapse of essential services.

Heidi Klum is trying 'Deworming'- but doctors aren't too sure
Source:X Supermodel and TV host Heidi Klum says she is trying to clean out her body of 'worms, parasites and metal', but medical experts warn the practice she's promoting may not be necessary, and could even be risky. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal , Klum, 52, said she was 'doing a worm cleanse and parasite cleanse' with her husband, Tom Kaulitz. She added, 'Apparently, we all have parasites and worms. Everything I'm getting on my Instagram feed at the moment is about worms and parasites.' Her comments have sparked a wave of responses from health professionals, who say there's no proof such cleanses are needed for most people. What experts say about parasites and cleanses The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines a parasite as an organism that lives inside or on a host, taking nutrients from it and sometimes causing harm. These include parasitic worms, which may or may not cause illness. Former Baltimore health commissioner Dr. Leana Wen told CNN that parasitic worms are 'a type of internal parasite that live most frequently in the gastrointestinal tract.' Source: X Wen said parasitic worms can infect people who consume contaminated food, water, or soil. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The World's Oldest Living Actors. Reportingly Undo Some, like roundworms that cause ascariasis, may cause no symptoms. Others, like pinworms, can cause diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, and nausea. Gastroenterologist Dr. David Purow told the New York Post, 'Not all people have parasites and worms as part of their normal microbiome.' He added, 'There are no clear, proven benefits to these cleanses. It is unlikely that we will ever see someone fund a study to see if these natural herbs and byproducts can be proven to be effective.' Possible risks and the truth about metals in the body Infectious disease expert Choukri Ben Mamoun, PhD, told MedPage Today, 'Hearing that someone is advocating a 'worm and parasite cleanse' is alarming because it is a medically unfounded practice that could potentially be harmful.' He also said there is 'no credible medical evidence that the average person harbors hidden parasites that require cleansing.' Experts also note that some herbal cleanses, like the one Klum described, can have side effects. Plant-based treatments containing cloves or papaya seeds have shown limited success against certain worms in small studies, but they have not been proven in large, controlled trials. According to specialists, these regimens can cause dehydration, nausea, and a loss of nutrients or electrolytes. Klum also mentioned wanting to remove metals from her body. Experts point out that our bodies naturally contain essential metals like iron, magnesium, copper, and potassium. These help regulate many body functions. While overexposure to toxic metals like lead or mercury can cause harm, removing all metals is not healthy. As Johns Hopkins parasitology professor Isabelle Coppens told USA Today , 'There is no magic potion.' AP Medical Council files review plea in high court on grant of permanent registration to FMGs
1 2 Vijayawada: Highlighting the importance of physical study of clinical courses by foreign medical graduates (FMGs) in their respective foreign medical institutions, the National Medical Commission (NMC) on Friday said it cannot be substituted by online study. "Medical education is not confined to academic knowledge alone. It involves the cultivation of clinical skills and the capacity to make life-saving decisions, and any compromise in the standards of medical education can have far-reaching and potentially irreversible consequences for society at large," the NMC stated in a clarification to AP Medical Council (APMC), which was in response to the ongoing row over issuance of permanent registration certificates to FMGs. The NMC sent a seven-page clarification in connection with the issuance of the permanent registration certificates for foreign medical graduates in Andhra Pradesh, while suggesting the APMC to file a review petition in the high court, seeking clarity in respect of two verdicts delivered by it in the matter of the period of internship to be done by the FMGs. APMC filed the review petition on Thursday. "Complying with AP high court's order in granting permission for permanent registration to foreign medical graduates leads to arbitrary relaxation of the regulation norms prescribed for ensuring uniform standards of study by FMGs across the country, which defeats the objective of such regulation," the NMC observed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unsold 2022 Cars Now Almost Free - Prices May Surprise You Unsold Cars | Search Ads Learn More Undo The high court, on Jul 9, directed APMC to grant permanent registration to a foreign medical graduate, identified as Katta Vamsi, within a month from the day of the judgement, even though the genuineness of the certificate of completion of his medical graduation in a Kyrgyzstan university was not confirmed by the Indian embassy in that country. In another verdict delivered by the court on Aug 4, the high court directed APMC to issue speaking orders in respect of four FMG petitioners in compliance with NMC norms in the matter of their plea for permanent registration. "Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations and Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship Regulations, 2021, require one year of compulsory internship by FMGs in India after completion of medical graduation in respective foreign medical institutions through offline study in normal situations. Further, in view of the outbreak of Covid-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war, NMC issued two public notices on Dec 7, 2023, and Jun 19, 2024, asserting that in addition to one year of compulsory internship, FMGs are required to complete one or two more years of clerkship in India to compensate for the period of stay in India as applicable based on passport entries of FMGs," the NMC clarification read. "Regulatory guidelines and public notices issued from time to time in the matter of permanent registration for FMGs were aimed at ensuring that FMGs are equipped with all the skills for practising medicine in India, and they need to be strictly complied with. The compensation certificates issued by the respective foreign medical institutions should contain all details of academic and clinical courses studied by FMGs during the extended period of study in the respective countries, along with the duration. In addition, the compensation certificates need to be authenticated by Indian embassies in respective countries," the NMC further clarified.
