Ex-Fairfax trustee's embezzlement case headed to trial
There's no plea offer on the table and the trial is expected to last four weeks. It's set for April 28, depending on courtroom availability.
According to prosecutors, Moland ignored bylaws that restrict using public funds to hire a law firm that was set to investigate him. Prosecutors say he should have abstained from voting to hire the firm because it posed a conflict of interest.
He's also charged with voter fraud. Prosecutors say he lied about living within the district during the 2018 and 2020 elections.
In a separate case, Moland is accused of exaggerating his health issues to fraudulently obtain in-home care services for people with disabilities.
He began misrepresenting his health status in 2018 to become eligible for the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program, which overpaid $78,012.55 for services that included laundry, cleaning, meal preparation and assistance while showering, according to prosecutors. He received IHSS assistance for four years.
A preliminary hearing on that case is set for next month.

Pekin man sentenced to 10 years for soliciting minor online
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A federal judge in Peoria handed down a 10-year prison term for a Pekin man accused of attempting to entice a minor for sexual purposes. In addition, Joseph D. Perkins, 32, was also ordered by U.S. District Judge Michael Mihm to register as a sex offender. Mihm also imposed a seven-year term of supervised release, the federal version of probation, when Perkins finishes his prison term. Perkins was found guilty at an April 2025 jury trial where prosecutors presented evidence that from January 2023 to March 2024, he engaged in online chats with a person he thought was a 14-year-old girl. In reality, it was an undercover officer. During that time frame, he repeatedly asked the 'girl' for nude photos and tried to meet up her with to engage in sexual activity. When they finally agreed to meet in March 2204, he was arrested by federal agents. He has been in custody of the U.S. marshals ever since. Under federal sentencing rules, Perkins must serve at least 85% of his prison term. The 10-year sentence is the minimum for the charge of attempted enticement of a minor. Bolton: No Ukraine-Russia peace deal ‘anywhere in the near future'
John Bolton, President Trump's former national security adviser, doubled down on his view that the president's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska will not result in a peace deal. 'I don't think there's a peace deal anywhere in the near future,' Bolton told CNN's Jake Tapper on Friday. 'As long as Putin is advancing on the battlefield, even if it's 3 yards in a cloud of dust, he's not going to give up anything if he can get away with it,' he added. 'And I think here, I think the White House has lowered expectations precisely for the reason that it's too complicated to handle here.' Trump is meeting with Putin after greeting him at the airport earlier Friday, shaking hands with the Russian leader. Days before the meeting, the White House lowered expectations around the talks, calling the historic meeting a 'listening session' and 'feel-out meeting.' Trump this week also promised European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that he would not negotiate giving up any Ukrainian territory with Putin. 'They'll be discussed, but I've got to let Ukraine make that decision. And I think they'll make a proper decision. But I'm not here to negotiate for Ukraine. I'm here to get them at a table,' Trump said Friday about Ukrainian territories. Bolton, in his Friday CNN interview, continued to criticize Trump's strategy on the Russia-Ukraine war. 'And I think the real measure of what we do here is to consider the failures of the past 3 1/2 years, to have a strategy on our side to do what was the stated position of every NATO member, the full restoration of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity,' he said. Bolton previously argued that the meeting is benefiting Russia. Putin's visit to Alaska his first time on U.S. soil since 2015. Former national security adviser John Bolton said on Tuesday that President Trump's hot-mic moment at the White House on Monday reveals key insight into Russian President Vladimir Putin's approach to dealing with the U.S. president as he pushes for a diplomatic resolution to the war in Ukraine.
