Ooredoo Group and Iraqi Telecommunications and Post Company have signed a Landing Party Agreement to land the Fibre in Gulf subsea cable in Iraq, establishing the country as a vital transit hub for global data traffic between Asia and Europe.
Ooredoo Group and Iraqi Telecommunications and Post Company (ITPC) have signed a Landing Party Agreement to land the Fibre in Gulf (FIG) subsea cable in Iraq, establishing the country as a vital transit hub for global data traffic between Asia and Europe.
As Iraq continues to strengthen its digital infrastructure, FIG will deliver highcapacity, low-latency connectivity to support the growing demands of businesses, hyperscalers, data centres, and telecom operators.
The project will play a key role in accelerating digital transformation and economic diversification, creating new opportunities for Iraq's diverse businesses and industries.
Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad bin Nasser al-Thani, Group Regional CEO – Middle East, Ooredoo, said: 'This agreement is another step forward in the rollout of FIG, advancing Iraq's digital infrastructure and enhancing its role in global data connectivity.
'As demand for high-speed, reliable connectivity grows, Iraq is well positioned to serve as a strategic hub, supporting innovation, investment, and long-term economic growth. We are heavily investing in next-generation connectivity and this will create a wide range of new opportunities for businesses and consumers while strengthening the region's position in the global digital economy.'
The FIG subsea cable is the largest ever built in the GCC, connecting all Gulf countries and beyond in a single, high-capacity loop.
With an unprecedented 720Tbps of capacity across 24 fibre pairs, it surpasses the combined capacity of all existing and planned Gulf cables.
Dr. Hayam al-Yasiri, Iraqi Minister of Communications, emphasised the national importance of the partnership, stating: 'This agreement marks a significant milestone. Iraq's strategic location makes it an ideal hub for regional and international data traffic, and the landing of the FIG cable system marks a major step toward realising a more connected future. This initiative strengthens Iraq's role as a key transit point for global data while accelerating advancements in hyperscaler expansions, AI, Cloud, and IoT.
'We are proud to partner with Ooredoo Group to bring the FIG subsea cable to Iraq, providing government institutions, businesses, and individuals with unprecedented connectivity. This will drive new opportunities for growth, innovation, and global integration, reflecting our commitment to continuously enhancing the country's digital infrastructure.'
With service expected to be ready in Q4, 2027, FIG will be instrumental in driving advancements in AI, Cloud, and IoT.
Najib Khan, Group Chief Business Services Officer, Ooredoo, concluded: 'FIG represents a new era for digital infrastructure in the region and Iraq is at the heart of this transformation.
'By delivering cutting-edge subsea capacity, we are ensuring that our customers benefit from the highest levels of network reliability, efficiency, and performance, supporting Iraq's digital ambitions and economic progress.'

Mideast Stocks: Most Gulf shares muted on lower oil prices; Fed symposium in focus

Most stock markets in the Gulf were restrained on Tuesday as oil prices fell and investors awaited signals from the U.S. Federal Reserve's annual Jackson Hole conference later this week. Crude prices, a catalyst for the Gulf's financial markets, slid 1.1% ahead of possible three-way talks involving Moscow, Kyiv and Washington to end the war in Ukraine, which would likely lead to the lifting of sanctions on Russian crude. The Qatari benchmark index fell 0.4%, declining for a third straight session as investors booked profits after an earnings-driven rally. Telecom company Ooredoo dropped 2.9% and Commercial Bank lost 2%. The Abu Dhabi benchmark index fell marginally, extending its longest losing streak since February 2024, as declines in materials, financials and consumer discretionary stocks outweighed gains elsewhere. Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank fell 1.6% and E7 Group slid 1.3%, while Pure Health Holding and Abu Dhabi National Energy rose 1.4% and 0.6%, respectively. TAQA's unit Masdar and partners reached financial close on a roughly $1.1 billion solar project in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia's benchmark stock index was little changed, with ACWA Power up 1.3%, while oil major Saudi Aramco eased 0.3%. Dubai's benchmark stock index was up for a fourth straight session and rose 0.4%, with most sectors higher. Emaar Properties gained 1% and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority added 1.1% after the state utility said it began trial operations and electricity export from the Hatta pumped-storage hydropower plant to Dubai. Investors are awaiting the Fed's symposium in Jackson Hole that starts on Friday; Chair Jerome Powell's remarks will be parsed for clues on the economic outlook and monetary policy. Monetary policy shifts in the U.S. have a significant impact on Gulf markets, where most currencies are pegged to the dollar. Outside the Gulf, Egypt's blue-chip index rose 0.8%, lifted by a 1.4% gain in Commercial International Bank and a 2.2% rise in Fawry for Banking. Arabian Cement jumped 4.4% to a record high of 45.73 Egyptian pounds after reporting that second-quarter group profit more than tripled. "Market was supported by healthy improvements in macroeconomic conditions and the potential for a further rate cut by (Egypt's) central bank, which meets next week", said Joseph Dahrieh, managing principal at Tickmill. SAUDI ARABIA ended flat at 10,882 KUWAIT up 0.1% to 9,326 QATAR fell 0.2% to 11,492 EGYPT rose 0.8% to 36,100 BAHRAIN lost 0.3% to 1,927 OMAN fell 0.3% to 4,918 ABU DHABI ended flat at 10,210 DUBAI added 0.4% to 6,151 (Reporting by Md Manzer Hussain; Editing by Sahal Muhammed)

Oman: TRA issues new rules to curb telecom sector price wars

MUSCAT - Oman's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has introduced new rules governing telecom pricing and promotions, aiming to protect consumers and ensure fair competition in the market. The framework, released last month after consultations with Omantel, Ooredoo, Vodafone, Awaser and Majan Telecom, seeks to prevent 'unsustainable competition' that could undermine revenues and investment in infrastructure. Under the rules, the TRA will monitor market trends and intervene if prices for the same service fall by more than 10 per cent in six months or if average revenue per subscriber drops by over 5 per cent. Measures could include requiring prior approval from operators — particularly dominant players such as Omantel — before changing tariffs. The Authority may also impose a three-month 'cooling-off period' if market behaviour indicates a price war, temporarily blocking operators from introducing new offers. Restrictions on promotions include a limit of four offers for the same service in six months, a maximum duration of 60 days per offer and eligibility only for 'active subscribers' who have recently used voice, SMS or data services. No promotion can tie customers to contracts exceeding 12 months and only 5 per cent of an operator's customers can be on discounted packages at any time. The TRA will track the impact of such offers on competitors' revenues and may intervene if losses are significant. Industry responses have been mixed. Omantel has suggested introducing a minimum price per gigabyte to avoid what it described as a 'race to the bottom'. Ooredoo and Vodafone have called for clear and consistent application of the rules, while Awaser argued restrictions should apply only to dominant operators. A clause preventing promotional offers through tenders from being extended to individuals or small businesses drew concern from some operators, citing potential impact on SMEs. The TRA has since removed the term 'commercial users' and confirmed that government agencies remain eligible. The Authority said the framework will be reviewed regularly and adjusted as the market evolves and new technologies emerge. 2025 © All right reserved for Oman Establishment for Press, Publication and Advertising (OEPPA) Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc.
