Brueckner chillingly speaks as new Madeleine McCann search begins…saying he can't wait to savour steak on his release

Scottish Sun2 days ago

MADELEINE McCann prime suspect has bragged he can't wait to be freed - so he can have a steak and a beer.
In his first interview, convicted paedo Christian Brueckner, 48, told a German broadcaster he was fed-up of being in prison - just as a fresh search for Maddie's body kicks off.

The rapist - who has refused to answer police questions over Maddie - whinged that staying tight lipped means he speaks less than ten words a day.
He even claimed he had forgotten how to use his facial expressions.
Brueckner told RTL he did not kill Maddie.
He also denied the 2005 rape he was convicted of in 2019 and which keeps him behind bars.

He said: "As I told you, of course, the fact that I have been in prison for many years for something that I cannot have committed and that therefore, through the participation of the media, half the world considers me a cruel rapist."
Brueckner was sentenced to seven years behind bars for raping an elderly woman in the Algarve - and is due to be released in September.
He is seeing out his sentence in voluntary solitary confinement after being attacked by another inmate, who broke one of his ribs.
German prosecutors have been clear they believe he killed Madeleine - but it's now a race against time for them to pin him to the crime.

Brueckner admits that, if released, he would flee to a country without an extradition treaty with Germany and go into hiding.
Philipp Marquort, one of his lawyers, previously said: "If I were him I would leave Europe and look for a state which doesn't extradite to Europe or Great Britain, maybe like Suriname."

The lawyer also told The Mirror: "I would get a face operation if I were him. I mentioned to him it would be nice for him to change his face or how he looks so that nobody can recognise him anymore."
That means that even if evidence linking Brueckner to Maddie's death surfaces further down the line, it may be impossible to haul him back to Germany to face justice.

Prosecutors have been scrambling to buy time in this knowledge.
Their last attempt involved charging Brueckner with insulting a prison guard - a crime in Germany - for which he was found guilty, but only received a suspended sentence, meaning his jail term was not extended.
The paedo flashed a chilling smirk on his way out of court when journalists asked whether he killed Maddie.

On Monday, German cops announced they would be launching a fresh dig for Madeleine's body today in Praia da Luz, Portugal, where she vanished from a holiday flat in 2007 aged three.
The area has been searched before, but this time the teams are armed with radar technology which can scan 15ft down into the ground.
The new search for Madeleine will focus on extensive groundworks that took place at the time she vanished, and last until Friday.

This bombshell new search is most important yet
By Rob Pattinson, Senior District Reporter
AFTER the airing of our exclusive investigation it quickly became clear - very few people had any idea over the extent of what the convicted paedophile and rapist might be capable of.
Despite denying any involvement in Maddie's disappearance, we need to remind ourselves, he is currently on course to walk free in September - in a matter of some 15 weeks.
And THAT is why the development of this new search in Portugal must be welcomed.
No dig for the remains of a child can not should ever be greeted with happiness. Of course not.
The plight of Maddie is heartbreaking for us all - nevermind how impossible it must be for her dedicated family to consider.
But justice must be done in such appalling circumstances, mustn't it?
Click here to find out why this search is the most important so far.
A police theory is the three-year-old or her pyjamas might have been dumped in trenches near the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz where her family were staying in May 2007.
At least 30 agents from Germany's FBI — the BKA — acting on a tip-off arrived in the Portuguese resort on Monday.
The search area will include a cottage half a mile away used by Brueckner and nearby scrubland.

Cops found 75 youngsters' swimming costumes at childless Brueckner's bolthole in Neuwegersleben
Children's clothes and toys were found at the paedophile rapist's abandoned den, plus masks, chemicals and guns.
There was also a hard-drive of pictures, which German investigators continue to keep secret, that is believed to indicate why they are sure Madeleine is dead.
Much of the newly uncovered evidence was found by chance at a disused factory Brueckner bought for £20,000 in 2008, a year after Madeleine vanished.

In 2016 a dog ran on to the property and appeared to find a grave.
Local cops then discovered Brueckner's dead dog - but underneath was a wallet with six USB sticks and two memory cards.
They contained highly disturbing material — and 100 cops launched a full search of the compound in Neuwegersleben, central Germany.

Rate of Gaza children suffering acute malnutrition rate nearly triples, survey shows

GENEVA, June 5 (Reuters) - The rate of young children suffering from acute malnutrition in Gaza has nearly tripled since a ceasefire earlier this year when aid flowed more freely, according to data collected by humanitarian groups and released by the U.N. on Thursday. The report was issued at a time when aid distribution in the Palestinian enclave is under intense scrutiny because of deadly shootings close to the operations of a new U.S.-backed system. After the two-month ceasefire broke down in March, Israel blockaded aid supplies into Gaza for 11 weeks, prompting a famine warning from a global hunger monitor. Israel, which has only partially lifted the blockade since, vets all aid into Gaza and accuses Hamas of stealing some of it - something the militant group denies. Around 5.8% out of nearly 50,000 children under five who were screened in the second half of May were diagnosed with acute malnutrition, an analysis by a group of U.N. and other aid agencies known as the nutrition cluster showed. This was up from 4.7% in early May and nearly three times the rate in February during a pause in fighting in the 20-month war between Israel and Hamas, the analysis said. It did not specify the exact rate in February, nor say how many children were screened. The analysis also reported an increase in severe acute malnutrition cases among children -- a life-threatening condition that compromises the immune system. It said centres to support medical complications from severe cases in north Gaza and Rafah in the south of the enclave have been forced to close, leaving children without access to lifesaving treatment. It did not give a reason for the closures but many medical centres have run out of supplies, been damaged in the war or attacked by Israel, which accuses Hamas of using them for military purposes. Hamas denies using them in this way. A Palestinian minister reported 29 starvation-related deaths among the children and elderly in just a few days last month. Separately, medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said on Thursday that doctors in the Gaza Strip were donating their own blood to save their patients after scores of Palestinians were gunned down while trying to get food aid.

Jury to start deliberating in Harvey Weinstein rape retrial

NEW YORK, June 5 (Reuters) - Jurors in Harvey Weinstein's rape and sexual assault retrial will begin deliberating on Thursday in a Manhattan court, weighing the credibility of the former movie mogul's three accusers against the defense's efforts to brand them liars. The Academy Award-winning producer and Miramax studio co-founder is accused of raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013 and assaulting two other women in 2006 and 2002. Weinstein, who has denied ever having non-consensual sex or assaulting anyone, has pleaded not guilty. The trial began in April. Weinstein, 73, is on trial for a second time after a New York state appeals court threw out his conviction in April 2024. He faces up to 25 years in prison for two counts of criminal sexual acts and up to four years for one count of rape. He is already serving a 16-year prison sentence after being found guilty in December 2022 of rape in California. Two days of closing arguments wrapped up on Wednesday, and state Supreme Court Justice Curtis Farber will instruct the 12 jurors on the law before handing them the case. Prosecutors with the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg have portrayed Weinstein as a serial predator who promised career advancement in Hollywood to women, only to then coax them into private settings where he attacked them. 'He held the golden ticket, the chance to make it or not. He made each of these women feel small, no match for the power broker of Hollywood,' prosecutor Nicole Blumberg told jurors on Wednesday. Weinstein's defense lawyers have said his encounters with the women were consensual and accused them of lying about being raped after failing to make it big in Hollywood by sleeping with him. "They are lying about what happened. Not about everything, but about a small slice - just enough to turn their regret, their buyers' remorse, into criminality," defense lawyer Arthur Aidala told jurors Tuesday. Weinstein was convicted of rape by a Manhattan jury in February 2020, but the New York Court of Appeals threw out the conviction and ordered a new trial, citing errors by the trial judge. Weinstein had been serving a 23-year sentence in a prison in upstate Rome, New York, when the conviction was overturned. That conviction was a milestone for the #MeToo movement, which encouraged women to come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct by powerful men. Weinstein has been held at New York City's Rikers Island jail since his conviction was overturned. He has had several health scares while being held at Rikers, and in September was rushed to a hospital for emergency heart surgery. More than 100 women, including famous actresses, have accused Weinstein of misconduct. He has denied assaulting anyone or having non-consensual sex. Miramax studio produced many hit movies in its heyday, including "Shakespeare in Love" and "Pulp Fiction." Weinstein's own eponymous film studio filed for bankruptcy in March 2018, five months after the original sexual misconduct accusations became widely publicized.

Gaza doctors give their own blood to patients after scores gunned down seeking aid

GENEVA, June 5 (Reuters) - Doctors in the Gaza Strip are donating their own blood to save their patients after scores of Palestinians were gunned down while trying to get food aid, the medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said on Thursday. Around 100 MSF staff protested outside the UN headquarters in Geneva against an aid distribution system in Gaza run by an Israeli-backed private company, which has led to chaotic scenes of mass carnage. "People need the basics of also need it in dignity," MSF Switzerland's director general, Stephen Cornish, told Reuters at the protest. "If you're fearing for your life, running with packages being mowed down, this is just something that is completely beyond everything we've ever seen," he said. "These attacks have killed were left to bleed out on the ground." Cornish said staff at one of the hospitals where MSF operates had to give blood as most Palestinians are now too poorly nourished to donate. Israel allowed the private Gaza Humanitarian Foundation to begin food distribution in Gaza last week, after having completely shut the Gaza Strip to all supplies since the beginning of March. Gaza authorities say at least 102 Palestinians were killed and nearly 500 wounded trying to get aid from the food distribution sites in the first eight days. Eyewitnesses have said Israeli forces fired on crowds. The Israeli military said Hamas militants were to blame for opening fire, though it acknowledged that on Tuesday, when at least 27 people died, that its troops had fired at "suspects" who approached their positions. The United States vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution on Wednesday supported by all other Council members, which would have called for an "immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire" in Gaza and unhindered access for aid.
