Arab Human Rights Day focuses on ‘Right to Food'

Muscat Daily16-03-2025
Muscat – The Omani Human Rights Commission (OHRC), in collaboration with the Foreign Ministry, marked Arab Human Rights Day on Sunday with a symposium held at the Diplomatic Club in Muscat.
The event, held under the patronage of H E Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali al Harthy, Undersecretary for Political Affairs at the Foreign Ministry, was centred around the theme 'The Right to Food'.
The symposium aimed to raise awareness of the right to food as a fundamental human right, in accordance with international and regional human rights conventions. It also highlighted Oman's efforts to promote food security through national policies and its humanitarian contributions, especially in relation to the Palestinian people.
Saleh Yahya al Maskari, head of the Department of Global Affairs at the Foreign Ministry, stressed that the right to food is not only about food availability but also about its diversity, affordability, and accessibility.
'The worsening food crisis in Gaza, exacerbated by the closure of crossings and the denial of humanitarian aid, represents a clear violation of international conventions and humanitarian law, which mandates that basic needs be provided to civilians without obstruction,' he said.
He added that Oman continues to prioritise food security and is advancing efforts to strengthen the system in line with Oman Vision 2040, focusing on resilient agri-food systems capable of meeting global challenges.
Dr Rashid bin Hamad al Balushi, Chairman of OHRC, noted that the observance of Arab Human Rights Day reaffirms Arab nations' commitment to upholding human rights principles.

Oman condemns Israeli PM's remarks on 'Greater Israel'

MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman has strongly condemned the statements made by the Prime Minister of the Israeli government and his claims regarding the so-called 'Greater Israel'. Oman expressed its categorical rejection of his illegal expansionist schemes, which blatantly violate international law and infringe upon the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state on their lands in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem as its capital. In a statement issued on Thursday by the Foreign Ministry, Oman emphasised that these expansionist propositions pose a direct threat to the security and stability of the region, fuelling hostility and tension at a time when de-escalation, cooperation among regional states, and respect for the principles of national sovereignty and good neighbourliness are most needed. Oman also reaffirmed its steadfast stance in supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of regional states and its firm rejection of any schemes aimed at undermining national entities or altering the political geography of the region. Oman reiterated its unwavering commitment to supporting the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them their right to establish an independent state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative. The Sultanate of Oman has called upon the international community to take a firm stance against these aggressive policies and to work towards safeguarding the rights of the Palestinian people, ensuring the achievement of a just and comprehensive peace in the region. Meanwhile, Arab nations have also slammed comments by Netanyahu apparently expressing support for the idea of an expanded 'Greater Israel', calling the remarks a threat to their sovereignty at an especially tense time for the region. Jordan condemned the prime minister's Greater Israel remarks as a "dangerous and provocative escalation" and "a threat to the sovereignty of states". A spokesman for its foreign ministry went on to reject what he called Netanyahu's "inflammatory" rhetoric and "delusional claims". Egypt also said that it had "requested clarification on this matter", characterising it as tantamount to a "rejection of the option of peace in the region". - Agencies
