2025 PWHL Draft Profile: Michelle Karvinen

Yahoo09-05-2025

Michelle Karvinen will be one of the oldest players entering the 2025 PWHL Draft, but her impact could also exceed that of the younger prospects entering the league.
Karvinen led Frölunda to a title this season, the first in club history.
Karvinen became Finland's all-time leading scorer captaining the Finns to bronze at the recent IIHF World Championships. The 34-year-old is a three-time World Championship All-Star. She was also named Best Forward at the 2014 Olympic Games.
With Frölunda this season Karvinen scored 21 goals and 35 points in 32 games. She also captained Finland at Worlds.
Karvinen sees the ice well and thinks the game as well as anyone on the planet. She's a good skater with soft hands and elite playmaking abilities.
With Karvinen's experience and ability to elevate her game against top competition, she should be able to immediately step into a PWHL top six and contribute offensively, as well as on the defensive side of the puck.
Karvinen has played in North America before scoring 131 points in 87 games with North Dakota at the NCAA level from 2011 to 2014.

Insider: Lakers have checked in on All-Star wing

While the Los Angeles Lakers badly need a starting-level center, they're also cognizant that they have other roster needs that need to be addressed if they are to become legitimate championship contenders. One of those other needs is another two-way wing. Dorian Finney-Smith made a significant impact on the team upon arriving in a late December trade, but at this point in his career, he's primarily a power forward. The Lakers could use an athletic wing who can play the 2 or 3 positions (or both), hit 3-pointers and defend at a high level. Andrew Wiggins of the Miami Heat does all that and more. He has been mentioned as someone L.A. should perhaps go after and could perhaps land. Indeed, insider Anthony Irwin said on his "Lakers Lounge" podcast that the team has talked to Miami about Wiggins (h/t Athlon Sports). "Wiggins… have I heard of any interest in him? I think right now the Lakers are interested in any athlete," Irwin began on the Lakers Lounge. "Now Wiggins does make a little too much money for my liking. $28 million is a lot for Andrew Wiggins. I would imagine they are very well in tune with what Pat [Riley] thinks of Andrew Wiggins, but the Lakers have checked in on him and asked about what the price would be." Wiggins averaged 18.0 points a game and shot 37.4% from 3-point range this season. After he was traded to the Golden State Warriors five years ago, he reinvented himself into a two-way player after he had been regarded as a low-efficiency, no-defense-playing chucker during his initial years with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Warriors sent him to Miami in February as part of the deal that brought them six-time All-Star forward Jimmy Butler. Wiggins could potentially start at the 3 for the Lakers and guard multiple positions on the perimeter, and his experience winning the 2022 NBA championship in Golden State wouldn't exactly hurt either.

Azzi Fudd Addresses New UConn Role After Paige Bueckers Exit

Azzi Fudd Addresses New UConn Role After Paige Bueckers Exit originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The UConn Huskies are looking for a new player to step up and lead their roster. Paige Bueckers moved over to the WNBA in April, and her close friend and fellow guard Azzi Fudd is up for the challenge. Advertisement Fudd, 22, was regarded by some as the Huskies second or third option last season as Bueckers led them on both ends of the court under longtime head coach Geno Auriemma. However, during a recent interview, Fudd seemed eager to make necessary adjustments to her play style as the team's presumed focal point. 'I think taking it progressively and one step at a time and saying the things I see, whether it's starting with my stuff on defense or offense when I see a screen,' Fudd told reporters. 'And taking it progressively to act when I see to tell them to do this or you should do that when we call huddles.' The Huskies are preparing for this upcoming season by consistently training together throughout the summer to learn each other's skill sets. 'We've been playing a lot more pickup, and I think that's been really helpful for me at least to have my team, and then we have our teammates before and after during the game, and let's do this and cut here,' Fudd added. Advertisement As training continues and the start of the season approaches in the fall, Fudd is expected to play a more significant role as one of UConn's more experienced guards. But it could take her a little while to adjust, especially without Bueckers, who now plays in the WNBA for the Dallas Wings. 'It's a learning process,' Fudd concluded. 'I'm going to get better.' Alex Caruso wore his Lakers championship ring to Thunder's parade

For a moment, some Los Angeles Lakers experienced some momentary anger that was directed at a player who used to be a huge fan favorite on the team. Guard Alex Caruso, the super sub and cult hero from the Lakers' 2020 championship squad, earned his second world title on Sunday when the Oklahoma City Thunder finished off the Indiana Pacers in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. He said in the postgame interview that he now has a "real" championship, which made it seem as if he was throwing shade at the 2020 title that was won inside the Walt Disney World Resort bubble. He then posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he had been imbibing and that it was just a sarcastic joke. As if to further prove that his comment on Sunday was indeed a joke, he wore the championship ring he earned with the Lakers as a necklace pendant to the Thunder's victory parade. While Caruso may not be the All-Star many Lakers fans claimed he was during the 2019-20 season, when he was among the top vote-getters in the fan vote, fans of the team undoubtedly wish he were still a member of the Purple and Gold. His elite defense and ability to effectively guard multiple positions, combined with his decent 3-point shooting and willingness to sacrifice his body for loose balls, have made him a valuable role player.
