Australian engineer freed from Iraqi prison after four years

After spending more than four years in an Iraqi prison, Australian engineer Robert Pether has been granted a conditional release — a development welcomed by his family and supporters. Pether, 50, was arrested in 2021 alongside a colleague over a contract dispute involving their employer, CME Consulting, and the Central Bank of Iraq. The pair were later convicted of fraud and sentenced to five years in prison and a USD 12 million fine. However, the UN has described Pether's detention as arbitrary and in violation of international law, while a 2022 ruling by the International Chamber of Commerce found the Iraqi central bank to be at fault in the business dispute. Pether's wife, Desree, who lives in Ireland with the couple's family, described the news as a moment of mixed emotions. 'It's the first time in over four years that we've taken one step in the right direction,' she told the BBC. 'There's a tiny glimmer of hope, but there's another mountain still to go over. He needs to be home and in hospital.' According to Desree, her husband is in poor health after years of incarceration. He is unable to keep food down and has reportedly not eaten properly in months. She also raised concerns that he may be suffering a relapse of skin cancer. 'He's unrecognisable. If he got on a plane now and they were checking his passport, they would not know it was the same person,' she said. Although freed from prison, Pether is still facing legal proceedings in Iraq and remains under a travel ban. The family has now launched a crowdfunding campaign in the hopes of securing private hospital treatment for him in Baghdad. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong described the release as a "positive development" following years of advocacy. "I know the personal toll Mr Pether's detention has taken on him and his family and hope this news brings a measure of relief after years of distress," she said, adding that Australia remains concerned about his health and the unresolved legal matters. Ireland's Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris also welcomed the news, saying that Iraq's Foreign Minister had personally confirmed Pether's release in a phone call. 'I welcomed this as a first step to his being allowed to return to his family in Roscommon,' Harris said. Pether had been living in County Roscommon prior to his arrest and had spent nearly a decade working in the Middle East. He was leading a major reconstruction project for the Central Bank's Baghdad headquarters when he and his Egyptian colleague Khalid Radwan were detained.

Trump announces travel ban on 12 countries, restrictions on 7 others

US President Donald Trump signed a proclamation Wednesday, reinstating a controversial travel ban from his first term, barring citizens from 12 countries from entering the United States and imposing restrictions on seven others, effective 12:01 AM Monday, June 9, 2025. The move aims to address national security concerns but has sparked criticism for its broad scope and potential impact. The banned countries include Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. Partial restrictions apply to Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela, affecting immigrant visas and certain non-immigrant travel. Exceptions are made for US permanent residents, existing visa holders, Afghans with Special Immigrant Visas, diplomats, athletes, and dual nationals with passports from unaffected countries. Trump cited deficient vetting, high visa overstay rates, and terrorism risks, referencing a recent Boulder, Colorado, attack by an Egyptian national who overstayed a tourist visa, though Egypt is not on the list. The proclamation follows a January 20 executive order directing agencies to identify high-risk countries. Critics, including #AfghanEvac's Shawn VanDiver, called the ban a 'moral disgrace,' particularly for targeting Afghans who aided US forces. Oxfam warned it would trap people fleeing war and persecution. The policy, upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018 after earlier legal challenges, may face new lawsuits. Trump indicated the list could expand, with Egypt under review. The ban aims to avoid the chaos of the 2017 rollout, which caused airport detentions and protests. Affected travelers and advocates are bracing for impact as the policy nears implementation.

Who was behind Colorado pro-"Israel" rally attack?

Law enforcement authorities in the US state of Colorado announced that they have identified the suspect in the Molotov cocktail attack that targeted a pro-"Israeli" demonstration in the city of Boulder on Sunday afternoon. Authorities stated that the suspect is named Mohamed Soliman, who was arrested without resistance. Police noted that investigations are still ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack, in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). US security sources revealed that the suspect in the attack targeting a pro-"Israel" group in Boulder, Colorado, was residing illegally in the United States. According to Fox News, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, a 45-year-old Egyptian national, entered the US on a tourist visa in 2022 during former President Biden's administration, but remained in the country after his visa expired. Reports indicate that Suleiman arrived at Los Angeles International Airport in August 2022 and was permitted to stay until February 2023. He filed an immigration application in September 2022 and was granted a work permit in March 2023, which expired last month. Earlier on Sunday, the FBI director announced the launch of an investigation into what he described as a 'targeted terrorist attack,' confirming that FBI personnel were working alongside local law enforcement at the scene on Pearl Street Mall, a popular shopping area in downtown Boulder. The attack resulted in several injuries, with victims transported to nearby hospitals, including the suspect himself, who is currently receiving treatment under tight security. In the first official comment, Axios reported that a senior White House official confirmed President Donald Trump had been briefed on developments regarding the attack. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also commented on the incident on X, saying, 'We're united in prayer for the victims of this targeted terrorist attack... Terrorism has no place in our great country.' We're united in prayer for the victims of a targeted terror attack this afternoon in Boulder. Terror has no place in our great country. — Secretary Marco Rubio (@SecRubio) June 1, 2025 For his part, the Israeli Occupation's ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, said: 'We are facing a wave of antisemitic terrorism against Jews in the United States.' — Danny Danon דני דנון (@dannydanon) June 1, 2025
