Court orders Arnie Teves transfer to Camp Bagong Diwa
In a 5-page order, the Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 51 issued a commitment order transferring Teves from the NBI to the Metro Manila District Jail (MMDJ) in Camp Bagong Diwa, Bicutan, Taguig City.
Branch 51 handles the Teves murder, frustrated murder, and attempted murder case over the alleged killing of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo and 10 others in 2023.
'This Court finds no merit in the motion of the accused to maintain his custody with the NBI detention facility,' the Court said.
In his motion, Teves' camp expressed concern over his safety. It also cited the Certificate of Handover signed by the Timor-Leste and Philippine government prior to the deportation.
However, the RTC said the certificate does not state that a specific agency must take custody of Teves as a prerequisite for his transfer.
It also did not give weight to Teves' claim that he may be subjected to torture, inhuman, or degrading treatment.
'While the detention facilities in our country may not possess the luxuries a person may have been accustomed to, the detention therein does not automatically make it inhuman or degrading treatment upon one detainee's mere say so,' it said.
'Aside from this claim, the court failed to see any threats against the safety and life of the accused Teves, Jr. mentioned in the motion and how letting him remain in the custody of the NBI facility will secure him against said threats,' it added.
The Court said that it appears that Teves is choosing his detention facility 'for his own convenience.'
GMA News Online has asked the NBI regarding the possible transfer.
The Manila RTC Branch 12, which is handling Teves' illegal possession of firearms and explosives case, has previously ordered his transfer to the Manila City Jail.
NBI Director Jaime Santiago, however, held off the transfer, explaining that several courts are handling Teves' cases and may order his detention in other areas.
Teves and several others have also been charged with the alleged killings of three individuals in Negros Oriental in 2019.
He and 12 others have also been designated as terrorists by the Anti-Terrorism Council, citing several alleged killings and harassment in Negros Oriental. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

2 Malaysians arrested in Cebu City for alleged use of illegal transceivers, 'sniffing devices'
Two Malaysians staying at a hotel in Cebu City have been arrested for alleged distribution and use of illicit transceivers and 'sniffing devices,' the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said Tuesday. Fire inspector nabbed for robbery extortion, found guilty — NBI
A fire inspector who was previously arrested by National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agents for attempting to extort P400,000 from a job applicant has been found guilty by the Ombudsman, the bureau said Tuesday. In a statement, the NBI said the Office of the Ombudsman found the fire inspector administratively liable for violating the Republic Act 6713 and grave misconduct. He was dismissed from service with perpetual disqualification from holding office, forfeiture of retirement benefits, cancellation of his Civil Service Eligibility, and is prohibited from the Civil Service Exam. The NBI arrested the man during an entrapment operation on June 27. According to the bureau, the arrest stemmed from the complaint of an applicant that the fire inspector asked 'thanksgiving money' from her in the amount of P400,000 in exchange for her inclusion in the final roster of candidates for the position of Fire Safety Officer I. Dad Rodrigo Duterte in good condition under ICC custody, says Baste
Former President Rodrigo Duterte is currently in good condition while remaining under the custody of the International Criminal Court (ICC) detention facility in The Hague, Netherlands, acting Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte said Tuesday. The younger Duterte said his 80-year-old father is in sound mind but has since gotten thinner due to loss of appetite. "Any other person that would be in detention would be depressed and you would have trouble eating because you won't want to eat. You would lose your appetite," the acting mayor said. "But cognitively, he's okay, but he's not a young person, he's old. He is ok physically but he has lost weight because, as how I see it, he hasn't been eating properly due to lack of appetite," he said. The younger Duterte also said he is set to fly to The Netherlands to visit the ex-Philippine leader in detention. "What's being done to him now is very unjust. But, it's ok. He is still our mayor," he said. "I am the acting mayor. He has been mayor here for several years already. Let's just follow his direction as we have done so in the past. That's what being a Davaoeño is," he added. Duterte was arrested in the Philippines by local authorities on March 11 based on a warrant issued by the ICC. He is currently detained at the Scheveningen Prison in The Hague on crimes against humanity charges in connection with the killings under his war on drugs when he was mayor of Davao City and when he was president of the Philippines. Earlier this month, his defense team has asked the Appeals Chamber of the ICC to disqualify Prosecutor Karim Khan from the case on the ground that he "failed to disclose a grievous conflict of interest." Government records showed that there were over 6,000 drug suspects killed in police operations during the previous administration's drug war.
