Egypt, Netherlands to deepen water cooperation, modern irrigation projects
The discussions focused on the ongoing project 'Modernizing Irrigation Technologies to Improve Smallholder Livelihoods in Upper Egypt,' implemented in partnership with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and funded by the Dutch government. Both parties emphasised the need to accelerate implementation in the target governorates of Assiut, Sohag, and Qena.
Sewilam underlined the importance of boosting awareness efforts through workshops and field sessions to educate farmers on the benefits of modern irrigation systems, including improved crop productivity, increased income, and enhanced product quality.
The meeting also addressed plans to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Dutch organisation Invest International to conduct a feasibility study on 'hotspots' along Egypt's Mediterranean coast. These vulnerable areas would be protected using eco-friendly sand nourishment techniques as part of Egypt's broader move toward nature-based coastal protection solutions.
Preparations are also underway to mark the 50th anniversary of Egyptian-Dutch cooperation in water management, dating back to the founding of the Egyptian-Dutch Advisory Panel on Water Management in 1975. Commemorative events are planned during the upcoming 8th Cairo Water Week in October.
Finally, officials discussed renewing the memorandum of understanding governing the Egyptian-Dutch High Committee on Water, which outlines collaboration on water resource management, coastal zone protection, and adaptation to climate change.

The 'Zad Al-Ezzah… From Egypt to Gaza' convoy, launched by the Egyptian Red Crescent on July 27, has so far delivered thousands of tons of varied aid. This includes food supplies, flour, baby formula, medical supplies, medicines, personal hygiene products, and two fuel trucks. The Egyptian Red Crescent has been a key national mechanism for coordinating and mobilizing aid to Gaza since the beginning of the crisis. The Rafah crossing has never been closed from the Egyptian side. The organization remains on high alert in all its logistical centers, with ongoing efforts to deliver aid that has now surpassed 36,000 trucks, carrying nearly half a million tons of humanitarian and relief supplies, thanks to the efforts of its 35,000 volunteers.

Egypt dispatches 10th aid convoy to Gaza
Egypt's 10th aid convoy started rolling through the Rafah crossing on Thursday early morning towards the inspection point of the Karm Abu Salem crossing, waiting for permission to unload tons of life-saving food and medical supplies for the Palestinian Red Crescent and UN aid agencies to deliver to Gaza. The convoy is part of the emergency Egyptian response, in collaboration with the UN and its humanitarian partners, to stem famine conditions unfolding in Gaza over the past several weeks amid the Israeli genocidal war and engineered famine in the strip. The convoy is carrying freshly baked bread, hot meals, flour, and urgently needed medical supplies for the besieged strip, according to media reports. Late on Wednesday, Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) Executive Director Amal Imam said the total aid sent from Egypt to the Gaza Strip since October 2023 has reached 36,000 trucks carrying over 500,000 tons of aid. Seventy percent of this is humanitarian aid, while the remaining 30 percent consists of relief and medical supplies. "This aid includes 200 trucks coordinated with the Egyptian National Alliance for Civil and Development Work," Imam told the Al-Hayat Al-Youm TV programme. Media reports also confirmed that aid trucks unload their cargoes at the Karm Abu Salem crossing after inspection by the Israeli occupation forces, waiting to be delivered to starved Palestinians by the Palestinian Red Crescent and other UN aid agencies working in the strip. The five-month-old complete Israeli blockade on the entry of food, water, and medicine to Gaza has driven most of the strip's 2.3 million population into famine. This Israeli-induced starvation has killed at least 200 Palestinians, including tens of children. Since 27 July, the ERC has managed to deliver 20,000 tons of aid supplies to Gaza under the Zad El-Ezza: From Egypt to Gaza humanitarian initiative to save starving Palestinians. However, Israel has continued to delay the entry of aid trucks into Gaza at the Karm Abu Salem crossing as Israeli soldiers inspected trucks over and over for hours at a time. On Wednesday, the Egyptian military spokesman said twelve Egyptian military transport aircraft have airdropped large quantities of food aid to areas in Gaza that are difficult to access by land over the past three days. The airdrops are conducted in parallel with land convoys through the Rafah crossing. On Tuesday, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi described the war in Gaza as "a war of starvation and genocide," calling for an immediate ceasefire and the unrestricted entry of humanitarian aid to the strip. Workshops Launched to Teach Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics
Youth workshops in Cairo will cover the development of ancient Egyptian scripts, grammar, and royal symbols, with expert-led training starting August 7th at Taiba Academy. Aug 06, 2025 The Ministry of Youth and Sports has announced the launch of a new training course focused on ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic writing, set to begin on August 7th at Taiba Academy on the Nile Corniche. The initiative is being organised in collaboration with Misr El Kheir Foundation and the Yaru Egyptian Civilization Foundation. The course is aimed at introducing young participants to the structure and history of the ancient Egyptian language. Instruction will be led by specialists in ancient Egyptian civilization and will explore the development of writing systems, from their earliest forms through to later scripts such as hieratic, demotic and Coptic. Participants will learn about the function and context of each script, as well as the tools and surfaces used for writing, including papyrus, stone, tomb walls, and pottery shards. Sessions will also address the decipherment of hieroglyphics, with references to the Rosetta Stone, the work of Jean-François Champollion, and materials held by the British Museum. In addition to the alphabet and numerical systems, the programme will introduce sentence structures, grammatical forms, pronouns, prepositions, negation, and genitive constructions. Vocabulary and word formation will be linked to both ancient and modern Egyptian usage. Other topics include the writing of city and capital names, royal titles, and the use of cartouches. Instruction will also cover royal crowns, sacred symbols, religious rites, and offering formulas found in ancient Egyptian texts.
